This paper presents strut-and-tie models for predicting shear strength of RC interior beam-column joints considering the plastic hinge rotation of adjacent beams. On seismic design of frame system, it is controlled beams to occur plastic hinges and to be ductile so as to dissipate earthquake energy efficiently. The plastic hinge deformation of beams is used as analysis parameter in terms of strain of beam tensile bars at column face. The shear strengths of beam-column joints are evaluated by combining direct strut mechanism with truss mechanism. It is assumed that the max force transferred by direct strut mechanism is based on the strength of cracked concrete element, and that by truss mechanism is based on bond capacity.

Metallic sandwich plates constructed of two face sheets and low relative density cores have lightweight characteristics and various static and dynamic load bearing functions. To predict the formability and performance of these structured materials, a computationally efficient FE-analysis method incorporating virtual equivalent projected model has been newly introduced for analysis of metallic sandwich plates. Two dimensional models using the projected shapes of 3D structures have the same equivalent elastic-plastic properties with original geometries including anisotropic stiffness, yield strength and linear hardening function. The projected shapes and virtual properties of the virtual equivalent projected model have been estimated analytically with the same equivalent properties and face buckling strength of 3D pyramidal truss core.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of 56 reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The reported results include the behaviour curves, the failure modes and the values of the pre-cracking torsional stiffness, the cracking and ultimate torsional moments and the corresponding twists. The influence of the volume of stirrups, the height to width ratios and the arrangement of longitudinal bars on the torsional behaviour is discussed. In order to describe the entire torsional behaviour of the tested beams, the combination of two different analytical models is used. The prediction of the elastic till the first cracking part is achieved using a smeared crack analysis for plain concrete in torsion, whereas for the description of the post-cracking response the softened truss model is used. A simple modification to the softened truss model to include the effect of confinement is also attempted. Calculated torsional behaviour of the tested beams and 21 beams available in the literature are compared with the experimental ones and a very good agreement is observed.
Damaged structures change the value of natural properties. The purpose of this study is to detect damage using the difference of natural properties between the healthy state and the damaged state. Anti-optimization method is used to find the conditions that maximize the difference in characteristics between the two contrasting models. In this paper, a algorithm for finding the loading conditions which can maximize the difference of strain energy between the healthy state and the damaged state of truss structures is developed. Numerical examples show that the proposed method is accurate and efficient for truss structures.
For the prediction of shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams, this paper proposed Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM) considered bending moment effect. Shear stress-strain relationship obtained from the TATM was agreed well with test results conducted by this study Further, shear strength obtained from the TATM was compared to the experimentally observed results of 170 reinforced concrete beams which had various shear span ratios shapes of support and shapes of cross section. The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams obtained from test was better predicted by the TATM with 0.96 in average and 11.9% in coefficient of variation than by other truss models. And the ratio of experimental results to theoretical results obtained from the TATM was almost constant regardless of the η and a/d.
This study carried out simulation for structural layout design for concrete structures by using the models of the ground structure method. The micro lattice truss is modeled as assemblage of a number of unit cells. The progress of analysis repeat to undergo finite element analysis to feed-back results of stress to the stiffness of each member. Through the repeated this analysis, truss model is represented to form the topological materials and the structural shape with the use of the local stress condition without mathematical optimum tools. It is successful to analyse the shape-layout problem as numerical samples on the lattice truss model.
A sandwich panel which is comprised of truss cores faced with solid face sheets is lightweight and multi-functional. So it is widely used to not only structural material but also heat transfer media in transportation field such as airplane, train and vessel. There are various core topologies such as pyramidal and tetrahedral truss, square honeycombs and kagome truss. The study focused on analytical approach to optimize compression and shear quality of the unit cell of PCM with pyramidal configuration. With various unit cell models which have the same core weight per unit area but different truss member angle, analytical solution for effective stress ($\bar{\sigma},\bar{\tau}$), peak stress ($\bar{\sigma}_{peak},\bar{\tau}_{peak}$) by yielding and buckling, relative density ($\bar{\rho}_c$) and effective stiffness ($\bar{E},\bar{G}$) have been computed and compared each other. With this approach, the most optimal core configuration was predicted. The result has become the efficient guidelines for the design of PCM core structure.

A transmission tower was designed using the structural methodology to assume a simple truss behavior. However, there is a big difference between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation of structural stability is that it is a semi-rigid connection and not the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural-analysis modeling strategy for the transmission tower design. The element models that were considered were the truss element model, the beam element model, and the combined beam-truss element model. This study includes linear static analysis, free-vibration analysis, and elastic buckling analysis with respect to the design load. The results of the analysis indicate that the axial forces, axial stresses, and maximum displacements of the three analytical models are very similar. However, the bending moments and stresses of the beam element model and of the combined beam-truss element model are significantly high. The results of the free-vibration and elastic buckling analyses show that the beam-truss model can be conservatively used for the transmission tower design.

Deep beam shall be designed either by taking into account nonlinear distribution of strain or by Appendix A of Strut-and-Tie Models (STM) according to ACI 318(M) from version of 2002. Although STM is accepted as tool in design Discontinuity region (D-region) which mostly exist in Deep beam, Corbels, Dapped ends etc., it has been modified by many researchers. In this study we design deep beam by STMs which use simple truss for load distribution and the model of complex truss for load distribution compare with the ACI traditional which is designed by flexure design method and shear provided by concrete($V_c$) as provided in special provisions section of 11.8 in ACI 318-99 [1]. This study aims to find the different and efficiency of deep beam design based on variation of parameter compiled from many samples selected from ACI traditional and two model of STMs, simple and complex load distribution.

In this paper, a general method for the automatic search for Strut-and-Tie (S&T) models representative of possible resistant mechanisms in reinforced concrete elements is proposed. The representativeness criterion here adopted is inspired to the principle of minimum strain energy and requires the consistency of the model with a reference stress field. In particular, a highly indeterminate pin-jointed framework of a given layout is generated within the assigned geometry of the concrete element and an optimum truss is found by the minimisation of a suitable objective function. Such a function allows us to search the optimum truss according to a reference stress field deduced through a F.E.A. and assumed as representative of the given continuum. The theoretical principles and the mathematical formulation of the method are firstly explained; the search for a S&T model suitable for the design of a deep beam shows the method capability in handling the reference stress path. Finally, since the analysis may consider the structure as linear-elastic or cracked and non-linear in both the component materials, it is shown how the proposed procedure allows us to verify the possibilities of activation of the design model, oriented to the serviceability condition and deduced in the linear elastic field, by following the evolution of the resistant mechanisms in the cracked non-linear field up to the structural failure.
