  • Isomotiol $(fern-8-en-3{\beta}-ol)$ was isolated from the n-hexane fraction of Euphorbia supina Rafin. The structure of isomotiol was identified by IR, NMR, Mass spectra and compared with the authentic sample. Isomotiol was first isolated from the family of Euphorbiaceae.

  • Methanol extract of Ilex pubescens roots prolonged bleeding time threefold, and inhibited the generation of malondialdehyde released during platelet aggregation inducted by thrombin. Through several purification procedures, its saponin, named ilexoside, was proved to be responsible for the antithrombotic activities of the plant. Ilexosides A, -D and -J and 24-carboxypomolic acid showed strong inhibitory activities on platelet aggregation induced by thrombin.

  • Four triterpenoids were isolated from the roots of Ilex pubescens : two new triterpenoids named pubescenolic acid (I) and pubescenic acid (II), and two known triterpenoids ilexolic acid (III) and oleanolic acid (IV). Chemical and spectroscopic studies have established I and II as 20-epipomolic acid and 24-carboxypomolic acid, repectively.

  • We have previously reported three new oleanene-type glycosides and kudzusaponin $A_3$ methyl ester and subproside II methyl ester from the roots of Echinosophora koreensis. Further study has now led to the isolation of three known oleanen-type glycosides. sophoraflavoside I, azukisaponin V, and kudzusaponin $SA_3$ as their methyl esters. The structures of theses compounds were characterized by spectroscopic and chemical methods.

  • The leaf of Petasites japonicus was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH and solvent fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH and water successively. From the EtOAc fractions, two triterpenoids were isolated through the repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatographies. The chemical structures of the isolated terpenoids were determined as rosamutin (1) and peduncloside (2) through the interpretation of several spectral data including 2D-NMR such as $^1H-{^1H}$ gCOSY, gHSQC and gHMBC.

  • The medicinal properties of Ganoderma lucidum have been recognized in China for many centuries. Active pharmaceutical components include triterpenes. To elucidate the molecular regulation of triterpene biosynthesis in this mushroom, a 57-base pair DNA fragment encoding the fourth conserved domain SQ-4 (SMGLFLQKTNIIRDYNEDL) of squalene synthase was synthesized and cloned into the expression vector pET-32a(+). The recombinant fusion protein induced by IPTG (isopropyl-$\beta$-D-thiogalactopyranoside) was overexpressed in the Escherichia coli. Using the purified recombinant fusion protein of 20.9 kDa, a specific polyclonal antibody was obtained from immunized rabbit. Expression of squalene synthase at different development stages of Ganoderma lucidum was analyzed.
