  • [ $\beta$-Sitosterol and oleanolic acid were isolated in a pure form from Radix Panax Ginseng, the genuine Ginseng drug, by column chromatography on Silicagel and aluminium oxide (Woelm). TLC indicates the presence of at least three other triterpene sapogenins.

  • Centella asiatica accumulates large amounts of triterpene saponin, such as centellasaponin, asiaticoside, madecassoside. We examined the effect of two candidates, MJ (Methyl jasmonate) and TDZ (thidiazuron), on asiaticoside production and the accumulation of bAS mRNA associated with asiaticoside biosynthesis in leaves of cultured whole plants. The growth of whole plants treated with 0.1 mM MJ was found to decrease significantly, however, the growth of whole plants treated with 0.1 mM MJ plus 0.025 mg/l TDZ was better than that treated with MJ alone. When MJ alone was added to culture medium, asiaticoside contents in leaves were higher than that of control after 7 days of treatments. The maximum level of bAS $({\beta}-amyrin\;synthsae)$ mRNA in leaves of whole plant treated TDZ and MJ was transiently observed after exposure to 5 days. These results showed the up-regulation of bAS gene by adding TDZ and MJ at the molecular level, however, synergic effects of TDZ and MJ on asiaticoside biosynthesis were not testified.

  • Yongia sonchifolia Max. has been used as raw materials of traditional Kimchi and medicinal herb in Korea. This study was performed to investigate biologically active components in the plant. First, the writer carried out the experiment of antitumor screening test against Sarcoma-180A and the cytotoxic activity against Chinese hamster V-79 cells with methanol extract of the plant. And the aqueous solution of the extract from roots of Youngia sonchifolia Max. was partitioned into n-hexane. The concentrated extract of n-hexane layer was chromatographed on silica gel column and developed with n-hexane and ethylacetate. Two yellow elutes, on concentration, were recrystallized from ethylacetate, and the $R_f$ value of TLC of the crystal was 0.43. After analysis by $^{1}H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$ and MS to confirm the structure, the author could identify the compound as bauerenyl acetate, a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpene. The crystal was colorless plate and m.p. was $280{\sim}282^{\circ}C$.

  • A novel triterpene saponin (1). deapioplatycoside E [3-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-(1$\rightarrow$6)-$\beta$-D-gluco- pyranosyl-(1$\rightarrow$6)-$\beta$-O-glucopyranosYI-2$\beta$.3$\beta$.16$\alpha$.23.24-pentahydroxyolean-12-ene-28-oic acid 28-O-$\beta$-D-xylopyranosyl-(4$\rightarrow$1)-$\alpha$-L -rhamnopyranosyl-(1$\rightarrow$2)-$\alpha$-L -arabinopyranoside] including seven known saponins (2-7) was isolated from the water extract of the roots of Platycodon grandoflorum (Campanulaceae). The chemical structure of 1 was determined based on the spectral and chemical evidence. (omitted)
