Chlorine has strong oxidizing power, also it is many advantages over other disinfectants such as the residual characteristic and economic feasibility. However, chlorine also has disadvantages such as creating disinfection by-products of chlorine as THMs. In particular, the most deadly disadvantage of chlorine is that it is extremely poisonous toxins about all alive lives. Disinfection with electrolysis water can be a very useful way Because you do not have to worry about chlorine's dangerous. In this study, we evaluated the potential as a disinfectant, across the evaluating disinfection effect and generating characteristic of by-products. The electrolyzed water could be obtained removal efficiencies of over 99.9 % the coliform by operating condition such as residence time, current density (voltage), the electrode gap. The residual chlorine be generated 10,000 mg/L in current density $1.0A/dm^2$ and residence time of 10 minutes. The residual chlorine concentration was possible to maintain a stable. The by-products generated by high concentration residual chlorine in the reactor such as trihalomethanes, haloaceticacid, chloralhydrate, haloacetonitrile were detected in less than a water quality standards. At the concentration of less than residual chlorine of 1 ppm, the chlorine disinfection by-products be generated most below the detection limit.
This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the formation characteristics of disinfection by-products(DBPs) by chlorination in the sewage effluent. The effluent was sampled from the sewage treatment plants operated in the activated sludge process and the advanced sewage process. The type of DBPs investigated were Trihalomethanes(THMs), Dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN), Chloral hydrate(CH), Dichloroacetic acid(DCAA), Trichloroacetic acid(TCAA). Major findings are as follows. First, the optimum injection concentration for chlorination in sewage effluent were found to be in the range $0.5{\sim}1.0mg\;cl_2/L$. Also, It was found that the chlorine dosage in the effluent of activated sludge process was higher than in the effluent of advanced sewage process. Second, the maximum formation concentration of THMs were $12.7{\mu}g/L$. The THMs formation reaction was finished in a short time of several seconds and chloroform was mainly formed. Also, it was found that the concentration of ammonium nitrogen is higher, the concentration of THMs is lower. Third, it was found that DCAA and TCAA were mainly formed as DBPs by disinfection.
This study is focused on effects of factors that affect the formation of THMs during chlorination in drinking water treatment. During the chlorination, chlorine consumption is increased by increasing the initial chlorine dose, the pH and the total dissolved solid (TDS) concentration. Also THMs formation is increased up to $58.82{\mu}g/L$ and $55.54{\mu}g/L$ by increasing initial chlorine concentration and increasing pH. However, concentration of chloroform is decreased by increasing TDS concentration. This is caused the cation($Na^+$) of the total dissolved solids preferentially reacts with the functional groups of the organic material which influence the trihalomethane formation. But total trihalomethane formation is increased up to $127.46{\mu}g/L$ by $Br^-$ contained in the total dissolved solids. DOC reduction was not influenced by any of the factors.
The effect of permanganate oxidation was investigated as water treatment strategy with a focus on comparing the reaction characteristics of NaOCl and sodium permanganate (NaMnO4) in algae (Monoraphidium sp., Micractinium inermum, Microcystis aeruginosa)-contained water. Flow cytometry explained that chlorine exposure easily damaged algae cells. Damaged algae cells release intracellular organic matter, which increases the concentration of organic matter in the water, which is higher than by NaMnO4. The oxidation reaction resulted in the release of toxin (microcystin-LR, MC-LR) in water, and the reaction of algal organic matter with NaOCl resulted in trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration increase. The oxidation results by NaMnO4 significantly improved the concentration reduction of THMs and MC-LR. Therefore, this study suggests that NaMnO4 is effective as a pre-oxidant for reducing algae damage and byproducts in water treatment process.

Evaluated were household THMs exposure associated with the use of municipal tap water treated with chlorine and with ozone-chlorine. The current study measured the THMs concentrations in the tap water and indoor and outdoor air in the two types of household, along with an estimation of THMs exposure from water ingestion, showering, and the inhalation of indoor air. Chloroform was the most abundant THMs in all three media, yet no bromoform was detected in any sample. Contrary to previous findings, the fall water THMs concentrations exhibited no significant difference between the chlorine and ozone-chlorine treated water. However, the spring median chloroform concentration in the tap water treated with chlorine (17.6 ppb) was 1.3 times higher than that in the tap water treated with ozone-chlorine (13.4 ppb). It is suggested that the effects of the water parameters should be considered when evaluating the advantage of ozone-chlorine disinfection for THMs formation over chlorine disinfection. The indoor air THMs concentration trend was also consistent with the water concentration trend, yet the outdoor air THMs concentrations did not differ significantly between the two types of household. The indoor to outdoor air concentration ratios were comparable with previous studies. The THMs exposure estimates from water ingestion, showering, and the inhalation of indoor air suggested that, for the residents living in the surveyed households, their exposure to THMs in the home was mostly associated with their household water use, rather than the indoor air. The THMs exposure estimates from tap water ingestion were similar to those from showering.
This study was conducted to evaluate the chlorinated disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) produced from the cell and extracellular product (ECP) of Chlamydomonas pulsatilla after chlorination. Reaction yields of DBPs produced by C. pulsatilla of ECP and the cell were $0.007{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ and $0.808{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ respectively, Also, SUVA values of ECP and the cell were measured as $0.313L/mg{\cdot}m$ and $1.052L/mg{\cdot}m$ respectively, The DOC of cell was found to be lower than that of ECP, while the SUVA value and reaction yields for the cell were higher than those of ECP. For ECP, most of the DBPFP was composed of trihalomethanes (THM; 47.3%) and haloacetonitriles (HAN; 38,83%). THM and HAN were the major DBPFP produced by the cell. Chloroform was found to be the major THM compound; 98.3% for ECP and 99.98% for the cell. Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) were identified as the major haloacetic acid (HAA) and HAN compounds formed by ECP and the cell as a precursor, respectively. As the chlorine dose was increased, concentrations of DOC, THMs, and HANs were increased. However, the chlorine dose decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a.

Concentrations and speciations of Trihalomethanes (THMs) and Haloacetic acids ($HAA_5$) that can be formed during chlorine disinfection by-product (DBPs) in full-scale drinking water treatment plants were investigated. Jeon-ju D water treatment plant that adopted conventional water treatment processes was chosen for investigation. SUVA values according to water treatment process changes were observed from 1.3 to 2.1. The process average concentrations of THMs was 7.4 ppb, 9.0 ppb and 14.7 ppb respectively, while the average concentrations of $HAA_5$ by each process which are precipitation water, filterater water, treated water, were 15.5 ppb, 14.9 ppb and 25.8 ppb respectively. DBPs concentrations was lower in the winter than summer. The major species of THMs was chloroform and the second highest was bromodichloromethane (BDCM) and the third highest was dibromochloromethane (DBCM). In case of $HAA_5$, the rate of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was detected. The species disribution of THMs is related to the change of SUVA and species disribution of $HAA_5$ is related to the concentrations of bromine and injection position of chlorine and injection quantity.

This study carried out continuous column test for estimating the regeneration efficiency with regeneration times and temperatures. More times regenerated granular activated carbon (GAC) has more ash in the GAC and has less apparent density. Two times regenerated GAC ($2^{nd}$ re-GAC) could removed the Trihalomethanes (THMs) in the water for the first two week after starting continuous column test, on the other hand five times regenerated GAC ($5^{th}$ re-GAC) did not have adsorption capacity. The THMs concentration in the effluent was almost equal or higher than that of influent at the first time of continuous column test. $2^{nd}$ re-GAC showed much more DOC adsorption capacity than $5^{th}$ re-GAC and the GAC which was regenerated with $700^{\circ}C$ had highest DOC removal efficiency among the GACs with 600, 700, 800, $900^{\circ}C$ regeneration temperatures. It is anticipated the cost of GAC regeneration could be saved more 100 million won by reducing the furnace temperature of 3rd~4th and 5th~6th about $150^{\circ}C$ compared to the current regeneration condition.
Control of Trihalomethanes(THMs) is a major concern of many water treatment plants. A number of researchers have studied the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorption process in removing THMs or organic halogen compounds. Recently, attention has been paid to the biological activated carbon (BAC) treatment of THM precursors as an alternative to the carbon adsorption treatment because of its effectiveness as well as its low running cost. In this study, changes of THM formation potential(THMFP) and removal of substrates in the SBR effluent were investigated in an attempt to clarify the mechanisms of the decrease/increase of THMFP in the BAC treatment. The increase and decrease of THMFP concentrations were observed in effluents during prolonged operation. When PCP or DBS was feeded as substrate contained in SBR effluent, the THMFPs were easyly removed with TOCs removal. But the case of SBR effluent containing SDS or glycine was introduced, and when microbial growth came to its near steady state, the THMFPs of treated effluents were increased more or less in comparison to those in the influents. Such increases of THMFP coincided with the increase in microbial growth within the activated carbon fiber(ACF) column. In the case of only sucrose was feeded as substrate on ACF colume, THMFP concentrations of effluent were higher than those of influent. The THMFP concentration was significantly increased on inlet part of ACF column, which biomass inhabits abundantly, then they were decreased gradually. These increases mean production of the secondary THM precursors by biological activities, which can be removed by adsorption and biological degradation on ACF column.
The Disinfectants/Disinfection By-products (D/DBP) Rule proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency requires the implementation of enhanced coagulation as a control strategy for natural organic matter (NOM) removal and as a means of limiting the formation of all DBPs, i.e., not just the trihalomethanes and haloacetica acids. To control DBP formation, several best available technologies (BATs) were determined for removal of DBPs and DBP precursors. The enhanced coagulation is one of the BATs for DBP precursors removal. Treatment facilities that achieve a specified percent removal of total organic carbon (TOC) prior to the application of a continuous disinfectant or that achieve a residual TOC concentration < 2mg/L prior to the application of a continuous disinfectant are considered to be in compliance with enhanced coagulation. The enhanced coagulation was applied to raw water in Korea, the Han River. Raw water were examined and effects of different raw water qualities on enhanced coagulation were investigated. Three analyses were used for raw water characteristics, water quality measurement, molecular weight distributions, hydrophobic/hydrophilic fractionation. The Han River had the relatively low alkalinity and low organic carbon concentration. The results of molecular weight distributions showed significant portions of low molecular weight organics, which is very different from most water in USA. The alum doses for the required TOC removal guided from USEPA manual were quite low (i.e. 10~30 mg/L alum) for the water, probably due to the specific water quality of the Han River.
