The objective of this study was to develop a new technique to control crown form of Hiscus syriacus to be used for an upright street tree with a single stem. Fertilization and raising the clear-bole length were the main treatments to compare the diameter and height growth of this species. The trees maintained with clear-bole length of 100, 150, and 200cm showed diameter growth of 15.7. 13.8, and 10.8mm, respectively, indicating the reduced diameter growth of trees with increasing clear-bole length, which is known as a typical characteristics in tending trees in silviculture. The effects of fertilization was not shown in this study. At the end of the two-year study from 1999 to 2,000, optimum diameter growth was obtained with the treatments of clear-bole length of 80-120cm, or 121-150cm. It is concluded that height and clear-bole length should be considered first in raising Hibiscus syriacus for street trees. Further study may be needed to obtain the effects of fertilization and raising the clear-bole length on uprightness of this species.
This paper proposes a mechanism for prompt and efficient construction of sensor network connecting sensor nodes and base stations using limited length edges minimum spanning tree. This mechanism can rapidly build a connecting tree which may be used in routing of sensor network. In an experiment for 2000 input terminal nodes, this mechanism can curtail 94.7% construction time comparing with the method by naive minimum spanning tree without tree length overheads. This shows the proposed mechanism can apply well to the application of swift construction of a sensor network.
The growth of tree is affected by voltage, frequency, temperature, mechanical stress, etc.. This paper describes the effect of applied voltage on the growth of tree in DGEBA/MDA/GN(10 phr) system. As applied voltage increased, the time to breakdown of the system reduced. As applied time increased, the tree length of X-axis increased with sigmoid shape, however, the tree length of Y-axis increased sharply at the initial step and then were nearly constant. The phenomena of tree were complicated more and more, as applied time increased.
Flow around a small white fir tree was investigated with varying the length of the bottom trunk (hereafter referred to as bottom gap). The velocity fields around the tree, which was placed in a closed-type wind tunnel test section, were quantitatively measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. Three different flow regions are observed behind the tree due to the bottom gap effect. Each flow region exhibits a different flow structure as a function of the bottom gap ratio. Depending on the gap ratio, the aerodynamic porosity of the tree changes and the different turbulence structure is induced. As the gap ratio increases, the maximum turbulence intensity is increased as well. However, the location of the local maximum turbulence intensity is nearly invariant. These changes in the flow and turbulence structures around a tree due to the bottom gap variation significantly affect the shelter effect of the tree. The wind-speed reduction is increased and the height of the maximum wind-speed reduction is decreased, as the gap ratio decreases.

For the efficient management of hospital sickbeds, it is important to predict the length of stay (LoS) of appendicitis patients. This study analyzed the patient data to find factors that show high positive correlation with LoS, build LoS prediction models using neural network and decision tree models, and compare their performance. In order to increase the prediction accuracy, we applied the ensemble techniques such as bagging and boosting. Experimental results show that decision tree model which was built with less number of variables shows prediction accuracy almost equal to that of neural network model, and that bagging is better than boosting. In conclusion, since the decision tree model which provides better explanation than neural network model can well predict the LoS of appendicitis patients and can also be used to select the input variables, it is recommended that hospitals make use of the decision tree techniques more actively.
Cluster sensor network is a sensor network where input nodes crowd densely around some nuclei. Steiner minimum tree is a tree connecting all input nodes with introducing some additional nodes called Steiner points. This paper proposes a mechanism for efficient construction of a cluster sensor network connecting all sensor nodes and base stations using connections between nodes in each belonged cluster and between every cluster, and using repetitive constructions of approximate Steiner minimum trees. In experiments, while taking 1170.5% percentages more time to build cluster sensor network than the method of Euclidian minimum spanning tree, the proposed mechanism whose time complexity is O($N^2$) could spend only 20.3 percentages more time for building 0.1% added length network in comparison with the method of Euclidian minimum spanning tree. The mechanism could curtail the built trees' average length by maximum 3.7 percentages and by average 1.9 percentages, compared with the average length of trees built by Euclidian minimum spanning tree method.
Tracheid length, microfibril angle, and compression strength were examined in south and north sides of Pinus koraiensis. The sample tree was 57 years old and had been planted in central Korea. Tracheid length on the south side of the tree ranged from 2.87 to 3.40mm and on the north ranged from 3.60 to 3.53mm and mean values were 3.15 mm for the south and 3.26mm for the north. Tracheid length was 0.11 mm longer on the north side than on the south. Microfibril angle on the south side ranged from $12.6^{\circ}$ to $20.3^{\circ}$ and that on the north from $6.8^{\circ}$ to $13.5^{\circ}$; mean values were $16.6^{\circ}$ on the south side and $9.6^{\circ}$ on the north. Microfibril angle was $7.0^{\circ}$ greater on the south side than on the north side. For compression strength on the south and north sides, significant difference at the 95% level was found only at l.3m above the ground level of the sample tree; for compression limit stress, significant difference at this level was found at 1.3 and 5.3m above the ground level. However, compression strength and compression limit stress were greater on the north side than on the south side.
Until now, substring selectivities have been estimated by two steps. First step is to build up a count-suffix tree, which has statistical information about substrings, and second step is to estimate substring selectivity using it. However, it's actually impossible to build up a count-suffix tree from biological sequences because their lengths are too long. So, this paper proposes a novel data structure, count q-gram tree, consisting of fixed length substrings. The Count q-gram tree retains the exact counts of all substrings whose lengths are equal to or less than q and this tree is generated in 0(N) time and in site not subject to total length of all sequences, N. This paper also presents an estimation technique, k-MO. k-MO can choose overlapping length of splitted substrings from a query string, and this choice will affect accuracy of selectivity and query processing time. Experiments show k-MO can estimate very accurately.
In this paper, we consider the implementation of connected digit recognition system using tree structured lexicon model. To implement efficiently the fixed or variable length digit recognition system, finite state network (FSN) is required. We merge the word network algorithm that implements the FSN with lexical tree search algorithm that is used for general speech recognition system for fast search and large vocabulary systems. To find the efficient modeling of digit recognition system, we investigate some performance changes when the lexical tree search is applied.
The fractal characteristics of AC electrical tree grown in DGEBA/MDA/ SN/HQ system was investigated. As the applied voltage decreased, tree initiated after retardation. All the trees were fractals in spite of tile applied voltage. Fractal dimension increased with tree length. When the tree grew slowly, the fractal dimension or tile degree of treeing deterioration increased.
