  • For the effective treatment of shipboard sewage continuously, a non-diaphragm electrolytic treatment device using DSA type insoluble electrode, Ti/IrO2, anode and H-C metal cathode, was studied. The most effective electrolytic conditions were obtained when cell clearance, 6mm, pH 5-6 and the concentration of seawater, more than 20% as batch test results. The COD removal rate was varied in logarithmic function, showed as C=Coe-KE and the required current was E = A/QCo [A.min/mgCOD]. When the COD removal effeciency was more than 90%, the electrolytic reaction constant was 0.02.

  • Drilling Mud Treatment Systems are widely used for Oil Gas drilling mud circulation, horizontal directional drilling mud recycling, geothermal drilling, mining, coal exploration drilling, water well drilling. Degasser is a device used in drilling to remove gasses from drilling fluid which could otherwise form bubbles. For small amounts of entrained gas in a drilling fluid, the degasser can play a major role of removing small bubbles that a liquid film has enveloped and entrapped. As with the desander, its purpose is to remove unwanted solids from the mud system. The smaller cones allow the desilter to efficiently remove smaller diameter drill solids. In this study, a simulation study is conducted on the degasser of the facility in the Mud Treatment System to conduct a performance review on the gas separation in the mud.

  • Purpose: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an on board imager (OBI) can check the movement and setup error in patient position and target volume by comparing with the image of computer simulation treatment in real.time during patient treatment. Thus, this study purposed to check the change and movement of patient position and target volume using CBCT in IMRT and calculate difference from the treatment plan, and then to correct the position using an automated match system and to test the accuracy of position correction using an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) and examine the usefulness of CBCT in IMRT and the accuracy of the automatic match system. Materials and Methods: The subjects of this study were 3 head and neck patients and 1 pelvis patient sampled from IMRT patients treated in our hospital. In order to investigate the movement of treatment position and resultant displacement of irradiated volume, we took CBCT using OBI mounted on the linear accelerator. Before each IMRT treatment, we took CBCT and checked difference from the treatment plan by coordinate by comparing it with the image of CT simulation. Then, we made correction through the automatic match system of 3D/3D match to match the treatment plan, and verified and evaluated using electronic portal imaging device. Results: When CBCT was compared with the image of CT simulation before treatment, the average difference by coordinate in the head and neck was 0.99 mm vertically, 1.14 mm longitudinally, 4.91 mm laterally, and 1.07o in the rotational direction, showing somewhat insignificant differences by part. In testing after correction, when the image from the electronic portal imaging device was compared with DRR image, it was found that correction had been made accurately with error less than 0.5 mm. Conclusion: By comparing a CBCT image before treatment with a 3D image reconstructed into a volume instead of a 2D image for the patient's setup error and change in the position of the organs and the target, we could measure and correct the change of position and target volume and treat more accurately, and could calculate and compare the errors. The results of this study show that CBCT was useful to deliver accurate treatment according to the treatment plan and to increase the reproducibility of repeated treatment, and satisfactory results were obtained. Accuracy enhanced through CBCT is highly required in IMRT, in which the shape of the target volume is complex and the change of dose distribution is radical. In addition, further research is required on the criteria for match focus by treatment site and treatment purpose.

  • The aim of this study was to achieve healing of Peri-implantitis defects and hard tissue augmentation using a bovine-derived bone mineral on the defect site. Two patients were treated with the surgical approach. With a full muco-periosteal flap elevation, the implant surfaces were exposed and granulation tissue removed around the implant and between the threads. Each surface of the contaminated implant was prepared with the air-abrasive device(PerioFlow$^{(R)}$) for decontamination. Bovine-derived bone mineral(Bio-Oss collagen$^{(R)}$) was then used to fill the defects and muco-periosteal flaps sutured to achieve transmucosal healing. Radiographs and clinical photographs were taken before and after 6 months of healing and an estimate of bone fill was assessed. Within the limits of the present case report, a surgical approach in treatment of peri-implantitis defects using a collagen form of bovine bone mineral was visited. Although limited, the two cases showed the stability and biocompatibility of a bovine-derived bone mineral and effectiveness of air-abrasive device(PerioFlow$^{(R)}$) as a decontamination method.

  • The mandibular condyle fracture occurs at 15-30% frequency of whole mandibular fracture. The treatment of choice is open reduction or closed reduction. In many cases, closed reduction is preferred for treatment of condylar fracture because it is hard to approach to condyle and there is risk of surgical complications, such as nerve damage in open reduction. Open reduction, however, has some advantages like possibility of anatomical reduction, occlusal stability and rapid functional recovery. Furthermore, it is possible to retain original ramal heights and to decrease deviation during mouth opening. There are many surgical approaches for open reduction of subcondyle fracture. At present, transoral approach using trochar device is tried for effective and minimally invasive method for open reduction of subcondyle fracture. And the authors report the cases of reduction of subcondyle fracture with transoral approach using trochar device.

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment utilizing the generation of singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS), which selectively accumulate in target cells. Peroxiredoxin (prx) plays an important role in eliminating peroxides generated during metabolism. Prx exert protective antioxidant role in cells though peroxidase activity. The aim of present work is to investigate the cytotoxicity of photofrin-mediated PDT in prx IV-transfectant AMC-HN3 cell lines. We confirmed that PDT has an effect on ROS generation in prx IV-induced cell lines. Treatment of PDT in prx IV-HN3 cell lines inhibits cytotoxic effects. Prx IV-induced HN3 cell lines resists in cell death during PDT. Also, prx IV-HN3 cell lines treated PDT inhibited ROS generation in contrast with vector control. We indicated that prx IV-induced AMC-HN3 cell lines have a function as inhibitors during PDT.

  • We have compared the antitumor effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT), using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) as the photosensitizer, combined with cisplatin (CDDP) on AMC-HN3 human squamous cell carcinoma. AMC-HN3 cells were cultured and then incubated with various concentrations of CDDP and ALA. 632 nm diode laser was given at $6.0J/cm^2$ followed by incubation for 24 hours. The evaluation of cell viability was done by MTT assay. In vivo CDDP was injected intraperitoneally 24 hours prior to PDT. The anti-tumor effects of each treatment were measured by tumor volume change. Cell viability were 44.29% for the cisplatin-mediated chemotherapy group $(6.25{\mu}g/ml)$, 77.22% for ALA-PDT group, and 15.06% for the Combination therapy group. In vivo, the antitumor effect of photodynamic therapy was enhanced by combination of Cisplatin-mediated chemotherapy. Photodynamic therapy combined with administration of Cisplatin appears to enhance antitumor effect and to be a useful treatment modality.

  • Maxillary anterior segmental distraction osteogenesis (DO) has been the alternative treatment option for patients with midfacial retrusion. The patient showed unilateral cleft lip and palate, and premaxillary distraction with rigid external device (RED) was planned to solve midface deficiency and to create alveolar space. Significant advancement of A point was observed, but relapse of A point was detected during consolidation period. The vertical position of the ANS was found to have moved downward. Axis of upper incisor decreased after DO. Maxillary anterior segmental DO is effective for treatment of patient with cleft lip and palate. The alveolar space is regained successfully, and the facial profile is improved without velopharyngeal problems.

  • A portable clip-type pulsimeter equipped with a magnetic sensing Hall device has been developed to raise the accuracy of oriental disease diagnosis and therapy by convergence of magnetism and oriental medicine. To improve accuracy and reliability of conventional pulsimeter due to subjective analysis of the pulse wave and measuring position dependency of the arterial pulse sensor, the fuzzy algorithm was applied to analyze the strong- and weak-pulse wave symptom. Optimal time for electronic acupuncture was calculated using fuzzy rules and interference were drawn from objective data in view of pre-treatment. Moreover, the electrical characteristics of the pain parts that respond to acupuncture point were applied in view of post-treatment to propose the scientific pulse wave algorithm and simulation experiment.

  • Plasma is 4th state of matters, which consists of electrons, neutral, and ionized particles. In biomedical research, cold plasma, which is generated in atmospheric condition, has been applied to disinfect microorganisms such as bacteria and yeast cells. Because of its low temperature condition, the heat-sensitive medical device can be easily sterilized by the cold plasma treatment. In recent years, the effects of plasma on mammalian cells have arisen as a new issue. Generally, plasma induces intensity dependent necrotic cell death. In this research, we investigate the feasibility of cold plasma treatment for cancer therapy by conducting comparative study of plasma effects on normal and cancer cells. We use THLE-2 (human liver normal cell) and SK-Hep1 (human liver metathetic cancer cell) as our target cells. The needle type of cold plasma is generated by the Helium plasma device. Two types of cells have different onset plasma conditions for the necrosis, which may be explained by difference in electrical properties of these two cell types.
