  • The EMU wheel is one of the most important component for the vehicle safety. For the tensile, fracture toughness and crack propagation tests, several specimens were collected from actual wheels. FEM ,analysis also was performed on the crack that was assumed to be 15 mm in depth under the wheel tread surface. The stress intensity factors $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$ at the crack tip under the stress ($P_{max}$ = 911.5 MPa) due to a rolling contact were analyzed for crack growth characteristics. As a result, the perpendicular crack was found to be more dangerous compared to the parallel one.

  • As a part of a series of previous studies, physical properties of various portions of a tire made of NR-Syn. R bloods were studied. 1. It was found, in general, most effective for tire tread when 50 parts of HAF black was blended with NR and Syn. R with a ratio of 70/30. 2. It was found that the use of SBR 1712 has an advantage in price, easy processing and physical properties than other synthetic rubber. 3. A technical compounding of various portions of a tire has to be determined for optimum cure conditions.

  • Nowadays, recycling of waste materials is one of great attention among all industries. Especially, the waste tires become a significant problem with increasing in a number of automobiles. For recycling of the waste tires, a polyurethane binder was mixed with the scrapped rubber powders obtained from tread part of the waste tire. This study covered the effect of processing conditions;curing temperature and curing time;on the mechanical properties of the blend. We also compared the experimental results from labors-tory scale with those from scale-up.

  • Embedded rail track can be described as a track structure that is completely covered within pavement. Rail supported continually on a concrete slab or concrete plinth. There are many kinds of types such as non-resilient track and resilient track, super resilient embedded track (floating slab). Embedded rail track is generally the standard for light rail transit routes because this track has many advantages such as reducing noise, maintenance cost and weight of track. In this paper, decision of track profile is restricted by the optimum levels of the flangeway and the gap between the rail head and the pavement surface of depressing tread zone. By result of this study, embedded rail track can reduce corrosion of rail, internal stress and rail deflection.

  • Among welded structure bogies in use for high speed freight car, a part of bogies manufactured in 1999 and 2000 have found problems that failure occurs in its end beam. In case of a freight car a difference of weight between empty and loading conditions are worse than in case of a passenger car. Moreover its brake system is tread brake without second suspension system. A failure of end beam is supposed to be due to loading by brake rather than vertical loading by freight. This failure can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, we have proposed a simple torsion-free brake shoe holder hanger to remove torsion of hanger bracket which is supposed to be one of causes of failure and performed finite element analyses for making trial manufactures and its application.

  • The running safety of the rolling stock depends on the design characteristics and the contact condition between wheel and railway. In this study, the effect of the conicity of wheel tread on the running safety is analyzed. The modal analysis results in $0.5\~0.6Hz$ natural frequency with lateral modes. However, the frequency analysis for the running simulation shows the frequency components near 1Hz. The running simulation shows that the KTX with GV40 wheel has less lateral vibration than that of XP55 as the KTX goes higher speed.

  • A theoretical model is studied to describe the sound radiation by the surface vibration of in-service tires. The tire is modeled as a circular ring model. The effects of normalized frequency and structrual loss factor are included. Through numerical integration of the sound pressure, the radiated sound power is calculated as a fuction of normalized frequency and structural loss factor. The basic sound radiation mechanism is shown to be the damped progressive wave field on the structure in the vicinity of the applied force. The results indicate that the potential sound reduction might be obtained if values of normalized frequency and structural loss factor are investigated.

  • Silica-styrene butadiene rubber (Silica-SBR) compounds have been used in the preparation of tire treads. The silica dispersibility of silica-SBR compounds is related to the processability, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of tires. Recently, in order to improve the silica dispersibility of the silica-SBR compounds, the wet masterbatch (WMB) process was introduced, which is a method of mixing rubber in the water phase. We aimed to improve the silica dispersibility of the silica-SBR compounds by preparing a silica dispersant applicable to the WMB process. For this purpose, cellulose, 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, and cellulose acetate were employed as a silica dispersant. The silica dispersibility of the compounds was measured by a moving die rheometer. Improvement in the processability of silica-SBR compounds was evaluated by the Mooney viscometer. The wear resistance of silica-SBR compounds using a cellulose dispersant was improved by up to 29%.

  • The running safety of a railway vehicle depends on the design parameters and contact condition between wheel and rail. In this study, the effect of the conicity of wheel tread is analyzed using ADAMS/RAIL software on running situation. Modal analysis shows in 0.6 Hz natural frequency of lateral mode in fully arranged the KTX cars. The excessive vibration of the tail cars occurs in the 17th car as the speed and the stiffness of the secondary suspension increases, and especially for 1/40 conicity of the GV40 wheel. Also, the analysis shows that combination of wheel profile, GV40 for power cars and XP55 for passenger cars can reduce the lateral vibration of the tail cars.
