Laser aided direct metal deposition (LADMD) process offers the ability to make a metal component directly from 3-D CAD dimensions. A 3-D object can be formed by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using optical sensors is introduced to control laser power and powder mass flow rate. Using H13 tool steel and $CO_2$ laser system, comprehensive analysis are executed to test the efficiency of the system. In addition, the dimensional characteristics of directed deposited material are investigated with the parameters of deposition thickness, laser power, traverse speed and powder mass flow rate.
Linear cutting tests on granite were conducted to evaluated the cutting performance of abrasive water jet(AWJ) using several types of abrasives. The abrasives used in the tests were grarnet, alumimum oxide, and silicon carbide. And one type of granite which is comercially known as "KeuchangSuk" was used as workpiece throughout the tests. The results from the tests were described in terms of cutting depth and abrasive productivity. Authors tried to confirm the effects of the operational parameters of abrasive mass flow rate, water pressure, and traverse speed of nozzle on cutting depth and presented almost all the data obtained in the tests. Abrasive productivity can be defined as the area of kerf wall cut by unit weight of abrasive and is an important factor to evaluated the cutting ability of abrasive and assess the cost effectiveness of an AWJ system. In the tests the maximum abrasive productivities of garnet, alumina, and silicon carbide were about 0.21, 0.24, and 0.20 $\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively under similar operational conditions.onditions.

The geometry PIG provides pipeline operators with continuous measurement of pipe centerline coordinates, bend radius, displacement, and bending strain in a single pass through the pipeline. This study introduces the developed geometry PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) which is used for geometry surveys. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) comprises angle rate gyros and linear accelerometers. The system measures the precise path of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline. This system is also used to produce a detailed map of the lire, measure curvature. Odometers measure the PIG´s distance moved along the line and instantaneous speed during the PIG run. Caliper sensors measure pipeline ...
In this paper, the technique to fabricate the optical fiber preforms by centrifuge was investigated, using silica particles of different sizes. The injection tube was designed to traverse axially so that uniform coaling of tiny silica particles onto the substrate tube can be certified. The deposition efficiencies and deposition rates of $SiO_2$ particles were measured to elucidate the effects of process variables such as rotation speed of rotor, aqueous flow rate, suspension concentration, binder concentration and overflow weir diameter. This study shows dearly the merit of this technique by enhancing abruptly the deposition rates and deposition efficiencies, comparing to the conventional processes for optical fiber preforms.
Analytical models for the prediction of the size of hardened zone in laser surface hardening are presented. The models are based on the solutions to the problem of three-dimensional heat flow in plates with infinite thickness. The validity of the model was tested on medium carbon steel for Gaussian mode of beam. Then the model for rectagular beam was used for the predicition of the size of hardened zone on various hardening process parameters. From the calculation results it appeared that the size and shape of the hardened zone are strongly dependent on process parameters such as beam mode, beam size, and traverse speed.
The testing philosophy and control schemes are investigated and applied to construct the Automatic Microwave Leakage Inspection System (AMLIS) . AMLIS is consists of three major parts such as Material Handling Mechanism, Fine Positioning Mechanism and Scanning Mechanism. The material Handling unit is designed to perform loading and unloading microwave oven onto the testing point by pneumatic cylinder and vacuum pump. The Fine positioning part includes X-Y-.THETA. table and distance sensing equipment. The scanning part is composed of five SCARA robots, which traverse X-Y-Z catesian coordinates respectively. The leakage testing probes are placed at the end of this each robot then the path and speed are both controlled via microprocessors. A performance test of this system combined with electric parts and software is done and the basic major function of system are accomplished.
The light pressure force from an optical standing wave (SW) can focus an atomic beam to submicrometer dimensions. To make the best of this technique it is necessary to find a set of optimal experimental parameters. In this paper we consider theoretically the chromium atoms focusing and demonstrate that the focusing performance depends not only on the strength of but also on the time atoms take to traverse the force field. The general conclusions drawn can easily be applied to other atoms. To analyze the problem we numerically integrate a coupled time-dependent $Schr{\"{o}}dinger$ equation over a wide range of experimental parameters. It is found that an optimal atomic beam speed-laser intensity pair does exist, which could give substantially improved focusing over the one with the experimental parameters given in the literature. It is also shown that the widely used classical particle optics approach can lead to erroneous predictions.
Autonomous Underwater Gliders (AUGs) are a type of Underwater Vehicles that move without the help of a standard propeller. Gliders use buoyancy engines to vary their weight or buoyancy and traverse with the help of the Lift and Drag forces developed from the fuselage and the wings. The Lift and Drag Coefficients, also called Hydrodynamic coefficients (HDCs) play a major role in glider dynamics. This paper examines the effect of the different types of glider fuselages based on the bodies of revolution (BOR) of NACA sections. The HDCs of the glider fuselages are numerically estimated at a low-speed regime (105 Reynolds Number) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The methodology is validated using published literature, and the results of CFD are discussed for possible application in the estimation of glider turning motion.
Experimental study was performed to investigate the flow behavior in boundary layer on the blade suction surface of a multi-stage axial flow compressor, which was focused on the third stage of the 4-stage Low Speed Research Compressor. Flow measurements in the boundary layer were obtained using a boundary layer hot wire probe, which was traversed normal to the blade suction surface at small increments by the probe traverse specially designed. Detailed boundary layer flow measurements covering most of the stator suction surface were taken and are described using time mean and ensemble averaged velocity profiles. Amplitude of the velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity in the boundary layer flow are also discussed. At midspan, narrow but strong wake zone due to passing wake disturbances is generated in the boundary layer near the blade leading edge for the rotor blade passing period. Corner separation is observed at the tip region near the trailing edge, which causes to increase steeply the boundary layer thickness.
