Single-grain (c-normal or c-parallel) and multi-grain YBCO superconductors were prepared by a melt growth process with/without seeding. The magnetic levitation force and trapped magnetic field at liquid N2 temperature (77 K) of the YBCO superconductors were investigated. Samples for the levitation force measurement were zero-field cooled (ZFC) to 77 K, and samples for trapped field measurement were field-cooled (FC) using Nd magnets. As for the magnetic levitation force, the c-normal, single grain sample showed the largest value, whereas the multi-grain sample showed the lowest value. The trapped magnetic field of the c-normal and c-parallel single-grain samples was 4-5 times that of the multi-grain sample. In addition, as the external magnetic field (the number of magnets) increased, the both properties increased proportionally. These results were explained in terms of the orientation dependence of the levitation forces and the magnetic field trapping capability of the YBCO superconductor.
The pulsed field magnetization of the short-circuited soldered double pancake coil made of stabilized commercial high-Tc superconductor (HTS) tape is experimentally studied. The evolution of the shielding current induced by the pulsed field and the trapped field after the pulsed magnetization was measured at 77 K. It is shown that the trapped field in the coil is close to the value reached in the field cooling process and reduces weakly at 5-fold increasing of pulsed field amplitude. The current relaxation at t~2 ms after the pulse is defined by the current sharing between the tape's copper coating and the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-d}$ layer. In the intermediate time scale (1 s < t < 100 s) the flux creep in HTS layer dominates. At t > 100 s the current's relaxation is defined by the resistance of soldered joint between tapes.
New results of dependence of magnetic field, trapped by a stack of HTS tapes, on amount of tapes in a stack are reported. Commercial GdBCO tape 12 mm width and without Cu layer was used for the research. Tape was divided in square pieces $12{\times}12mm^2$ from which stacks were formed. Filling factor of the tape was about 1.4%. Measurements were carried out for stacks with height from 5 to 250 pieces and at wide temperature range from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen. Both FC (field cooling) and ZFC (zero field cooling) cooling methods were used in the research. These two methods show matching results with good accuracy. As a result dependences of trapped magnetic flux on amount of tapes for different temperatures were received. Research shows, that with increasing height of the stack trapped magnetic field value reach saturation at about 60 tapes in a stack for low temperatures. From 60 to 100 tapes increase of magnet flux is only 5%. Thus increase amount of tapes in a stack is not profitable. Also investigation of trapped magnet field relaxation was carried out. Relaxation speed decreases with increasing amount of elements. It means that the higher the stack is, the longer trapped flux will be held in cause of the same temperature.
This study explores the use of a bulk type high-temperature superconductors (HTS) as trapped field magnets in synchronous motors. A HTS bulk is examined for its ability to generate powerful magnetic fields over a permanent magnet and to eliminate the need for a direct power supply connection compared to a tape form of HTS. A 150 kW interior-mounted bulk-type superconducting synchronous motor is designed and analyzed. The A-H formulation is used to numerical analysis. The results show superior electrical performance and weight reduction when comparing the designed model with the conventional permanent magnet synchronous motor of the same topology. This study presents HTS bulk synchronous motor's overall design process and highlights its potential in achieving relatively high power density than conventional permanent magnet synchronous motor.

YBCO superconductors were prepared by top-seeded melt growth process using various numbers of seeds. The levitation forces and trapped magnetic fields of the top surfaces of the samples were measured using Nd-B-Fe permanent magnets It was found that the processing time was greatly reduced by multiple seeding, but the properties were decreased as the number of seeds was increased. The degradation of the properties is attributed to the presence of the nonsuperconducting phases at the grain boundaries as result of the entrapment of a residual melt at grain boundaries during melt processing.

In this study, we fabricated single grain YBCO bulk superconductors with control of the distance between the seed and the upper surface of the YBCO compacts. The magnetic levitation force of the YBa2Cu3O7 superconducting bulk, which corresponds to the energy amount of the superconducting bulk, was measured to be 32.634 N at the center of the bulk where the seed was placed. Under field cooling conditions, a capture magnetic force of 2.17 kG was observed at the center of the bulk. The trapped magnetic force curve corresponding to the stability of the superconducting bulk means that the superconducting specimens were well grown in the form of single grains.

The patterning of microbead in microfluidics channel is a practical technique for application in bio and medical areas. An approach is described for a direct patterning of magnetically active microbeads in microfluidic devices without inner structure. Local magnet arrangements - flat arrangement and stack arrangement - contacting same poles or opposite poles of magnet were utilized for generating trapping magnetic fields. The arrangement of magnets contacting same poles generated isolated patterns by repelling of magnetic field. The flat arrangement of vertically reverse magnet arrays shaped trapping patterns repelling magnetic field line between same poles. Spatially, the stack compositions of magnet arrangements allow diverse isolated trapped patterns of magnetic particles. Trapped magnetic particles in fluidic channels were stable on the $18m{\ell}/hr$ flow conditions and magnetic force of 1.08 mT in the all experiments. This experimental study suggests the simple and versatile methods to pattern magnetic particles, and has potential of wide application to bio and medical area.

For the practical application of a YBCO superconductor bulk, the superconductor bulk magnet with high magnetic field on a large area surface should be fabricated. To make this, YBCO single crystal bulks with fine $Y_2BaCuO_5$(Y211) particles have been prepared by the top-seed melt growth(TSMG) method with $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$, $Y_2O_3$, and $CeO_2$ mixing precursor. By using $Y_2O_3$ instead of $Y_2BaCuO_5$ as precursor, the manufacturing process became simpler and more economical. The microstructures, trapped field and critical current density of the various conditioned YBCO bulks have been observed, analyzed and measured. The different characteristic values of the several samples have been analyzed from the viewpoint of their microstructures. We have developed a $8{\times}12cm$ size superconductor bulk magnet, up to 3 T class, by using the 4 T class-high field superconducting magnetizer and confirmed the applicability of the transmission level circuit breakers by measuring the strength and speed of the superconductor bulk magnet actuator.
