The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexible structure of parabolic shell using photostrictive actuators. The analysis is made to know its dynamic behavior and light-induced control forces for coupled parabolic shell. The effects of an actuator location as well as membrane and bending components under the control action have been analyzed considering the approximate spherical model. The parabolic membrane shell accuracy is being mathematically approximated and validated comparing the light induced control forces using approximate equivalent spherical shell model. The parabolic shell with kapton smart material and photostrictive actuators has been used to formulate the governing equation in the transverse direction. The Kirchhoff-Love assumptions are used to obtain the governing equation of shell with actuator. The mechanical membrane forces and bending moments for parabolic thin shell with actuator is used to analyze the dynamic effect. The results show that membrane control action is much more significant than bending control action. Photostrictive actuators oriented along circumferential direction (actuator-2) can give better control effect than actuators placed along longitudinal direction (actuator-1). The slight difference is observed between spherical and parabolic shell for a surface with focal length to the diameter ratio of 1.00 or more than unity. Space applications often have the shape of parabolical shells or shell of revolution, due to their required focusing, aiming, or reflecting performance. The present approach is focused that photostrictive actuators can effectively control the vibration of parabolical membrane shell. Also, the actuator's location plays an important role in defining the control force.

Free axisymmetric vibrations of layered cylindrical shells of variable thickness are studied using spline function approximation techniques. Three different types of thickness variations are considered namely linear, exponential and sinusoidal. The equations of axisymmetric motion of layered cylindrical shells, on the longitudinal and transverse displacement components are obtained using Love's first approximation theory. A system of coupled differential equations on displacement functions are obtained by assuming the displacements in a separable form. Then the displacements are approximated using Bickley-spline approximation. The vibrations of two-layered cylindrical shells, made up of several types of layered materials and different boundary conditions are considered. Parametric studies have been made on the variation of frequency parameter with respect to the relative layer thickness, length ratio and type of thickness variation parameter.
Acoustical properties of chestnut and paulownia woods have been determined in four film thicknesses of oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing on double surfaces of soundboard to elucidate effects of finishing. Accelerometer was attached to the specimen at one third position from one end, and specimen was hit by the impact hammer at one third position from opposite end. Data were processed by vibration analyzer. The ratio of axial-to-transverse sound velocity of untreated specimens of chestnut and paulownia were 3.25 and 5.34, respectively. Natural frequency, specific Young's modulus, acoustical coefficient, sound velocity, damping of sound radiation(DSR) and acoustical converting efficiency(ACE) decreased by oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing for both species. Damping of internal friction of chestnut decreased by oriental lacquering and cashew varnishing, but that of paulownia increased. Natural frequency. specific Young's modulus, acoustical coefficient, sound velocity, and DSR decreased with increased film thickness of both finishing materials. However, damping of internal friction and ACE showed irregular tendency with increased film thickness. Acoustical properties of cashew varnished chestnut specimen were better than those of oriental lacquered specimen. Acoustical properties of oriental lacquered paulownia specimen were better than those of cashew varnished specimen.

This paper proposes a quick and simplified method to describe masonry vaults in global seismic analyses of buildings. An equivalent macro-element constituted by a set of six trusses, two for each transverse, longitudinal and diagonal direction, is introduced. The equivalent trusses, whose stiffness is calculated by fully modeled vaults of different geometry, mechanical properties and boundary conditions, simulate the vault in both global analysis and local analysis, such as kinematic or rocking approaches. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the influence of geometrical characteristics and mechanical features on the equivalent stiffness values. The method was numerically validated by performing modal and transient analysis on a three naves-church in the elastic range. Vibration modes and displacement time-histories were compared showing satisfying agreement between the complete and the simplified models. This procedure is particularly useful in engineering practice because it allows to assess, in a simplified way, the effectiveness of strengthening interventions for reducing horizontal relative displacements between vault supports.
This paper deals with the effect of ply orientation and control gain on tip transverse displacement of functionally graded beam layer for both active constrained layer damping (ACLD) and passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) system. The functionally graded beam is taken as host beam with a bonded viscoelastic layer in ACLD beam system. Piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite (PFRC) laminate is a constraining layer which acts as actuator through the velocity feedback control system. A finite element model has been developed to study actuation of the smart beam system. Fractional order derivative constitutive model is used for the viscoelastic constitutive equation. The control voltage required for ACLD treatment for various symmetric ply stacking sequences is highest in case of longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate over other ply stacking sequences. Performance of symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates on damping characteristics has been investigated for smart beam system using time and frequency response plots. Symmetric and anti-symmetric ply laminates significantly reduce the amplitude of the vibration over the longitudinal orientation of fibers of PFRC laminate. The analysis reveals that the PFRC laminate can be used effectively for developing very light weight smart structures.
In this work, quasi three-dimensional (quasi-3D) shear deformation theory is presented for bending and dynamic analysis of functionally graded (FG) plates. The effect of varying material properties and volume fraction of the constituent on dynamic and bending behavior of the FG plate is discussed. The benefit of this model over other contributions is that a number of variables is diminished. The developed model considers nonlinear displacements through the thickness and ensures the free boundary conditions at top and bottom faces of the plate without using any shear correction factors. The basic equations that account for the effects of transverse and normal shear stresses are derived from Hamilton's principle. The analytical solutions are determined via the Navier procedure. The accuracy of the proposed formulation is proved by comparisons with the different 2D, 3D and quasi-3D solutions found in the literature.
The influence of prestress force on the fundamental frequency and static deflection shape of uncracked Prestressed Concrete (PC) beams with a parabolic bonded tendon was examined in this paper. Due to the conflicts among existing theories, the analytical solutions for properly considering the dynamic and static behavior of these members is not straightforward. A series of experiments were conducted for a total period of approximately 2.5 months on a PC beam made with high strength concrete, subsequently and closely to the 28 days of age of concrete. Specifically, the simply supported PC member was short term subjected to free transverse vibration and three-point bending tests during its early-age. Subsequently, the experimental data were compared with a model that describes the dynamic behavior of PC girders as a combination of two substructures interconnected, i.e., a compressed Euler-Bernoulli beam and a tensioned parabolic cable. It was established that the fundamental frequency of uncracked PC beams with a parabolic bonded tendon is sensitive to the variation of the initial elastic modulus of concrete in the early-age curing. Furthermore, the small variation in experimental frequency with time makes doubtful its use in inverse problem identifications. Conversely, the relationship between prestress force and static deflection shape is well described by the magnification factor formula of the "compression-softening" theory by assuming the variation of the chord elastic modulus of concrete with time.
The ultimate strength behaviour of sandwich composite beams with J-hooks and normal weight concrete (SCSSBJNs) are studied through two-point loading tests on ten full-scale SCSSBJNs. The test results show that the SCSSBJN with different parameters under two-point loads exhibits three types of failure modes, i.e., flexure, shear, and combined shear and flexure mode. SCSSBJN failed in different failure modes exhibits different load-deflection behaviours, and the main difference of these three types of behaviours exist in their last working stages. The influences of thickness of steel faceplate, shear span ratio, concrete core strength, and spacing of J-hooks on structural behaviours of SCSSBJN are discussed and analysed. These test results show that the failure mode of SCSSBJN was sensitive to the thickness of steel faceplate, shear span ratio, and concrete core strength. Theoretical models are developed to estimate the cracking, yielding, and ultimate bending resistance of SCSSBJN as well as its transverse cross-sectional shear resistance. The validations of predictions by these theoretical models proved that they are capable of estimating strengths of novel SCSSBJNs.
Wave propagation with high transverse deflection could affect the stability of the ball in its trajectory. For low stiffness balls similar to soccer and volleyball balls, the waves are more noticeable in comparison to other balls like ping-pong ball. On the other hand, the soccer balls are under heavy impact loads from shoots and contacting different objects in the field. The maximum recorded speed of a soccer ball after kicking is the 211 km/hr and the average maximum speed is around 112 km/hr. Therefore, in such speeds the aerodynamic forces become important which are directly related to geometrical shape of the ball. In this regard, the wave propagation in soccer ball is examined in the current study using large deformation shear deformable formulations. Classical relations of stress-strain components are taken into consideration along with minimum total energy principle. The final derived relations were solved by using harmonic differential quadrature method. The results are generally presented ion term of phase velocity as function of different influencing parameters of the materials, geometry and mass of the ball.
In the present paper, a simple quasi-3D integral higher-order beam theory (HBT) is presented, in which both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects are included for mechanical analysis of advanced composite beams with simply supported boundary conditions, handling mainly bending, buckling, and free vibration problems. The kinematics is based on a novel displacement field which includes the undetermined integral terms and the parabolic function is used in terms of thickness coordinate to represent the effect of transverse shear deformation. The governing equilibrium equations are drawn from the dynamic version of the principle of virtual work; whereas the solution of the problem is obtained by assuming a Navier technique for simply supported advanced composite beams subjected to sinusoidally and uniformly distributed loads. The correctness of the present computational method is checked by comparing the obtained numerical results with quasi-3D solutions found in the literature and with those provided by other shear deformation beam theories. It can be confirmed that the proposed model, which does not involve any shear correction factor, is not only accurate but also simple and useful in solving the static and dynamic response of advanced composite beams.
