Studies on dynamic characteristics of the hanger vibration using field monitoring data are important for the design and evaluation of high-speed railway truss arch bridges. This paper presents an analysis of the hanger's dynamic displacement responses based on field monitoring of Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge, which is a high-speed railway truss arch bridge with the longest span throughout the world. The three vibration parameters, i.e., dynamic displacement amplitude, dynamic load factor and vibration amplitude, are selected to investigate the hanger's vibration characteristics in each railway load case including the probability statistical characteristics and coupled vibration characteristics. The influences of carriageway and carriage number on the hanger's vibration characteristics are further investigated. The results indicate that: (1) All the eight railway load cases can be successfully identified according to the relationship of responses from strain sensors and accelerometers in the structural health monitoring system. (2) The hanger's three vibration parameters in each load case in the longitudinal and transverse directions have obvious probabilistic characteristics. However, they fall into different distribution functions. (3) There is good correlation between the hanger's longitudinal/transverse dynamic displacement and the main girder's transverse dynamic displacement in each load case, and their relationships are shown in the hysteresis curves. (4) Influences of the carriageway and carriage number on the hanger's three parameters are different in both longitudinal and transverse directions; while the influence on any of the three parameters presents an obvious statistical trend. The present paper lays a good foundation for the further analysis of train-induced hanger vibration and control.
Equations of motion of thin-walled composite H-type cross-section beams incorporating a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear and primary and secondary warping, and anisotropy of constituent materials are derived. The vibrational characteristics of a composite thin-walled beam exhibiting the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness system(CAS) and the circumferentially uniform stiffness system(CUS) are exploited in connection with the bending-transverse shear coupling and the bending-twist coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials.
The purpose of this study is to verify the vibration and damping characteristics of elastic-viscoelastic-elastic structures, theoretically and experimentally. The forth-order differential equations of motion are derived for the transverse vibration of three-layered plates with viscoelastic core layer. The equations consider both transverse displacements of the constraining layer and the bare base plate as variable and account for the effect of the transverse normal strain and the shear strain of viscoelastic core layer on the vibration of the plates. Finite difference analysis of the equations and experimental measurements are performed on the three-layered plates of completely free boundary condition. Comparative investigations on the theory and the results of direct frequency analysis of NASTRAN are carried out on the same structures.

In this study, basic concepts of magnet were introduced, and dynamic characteristics of magnet coupling were explored. Based on these characteristics, it was proposed how to analyze transverse and torsional vibrations of a spindle system with magnet coupling. Proposed theoretical approaches were applied to a precision power transmission system machined for this study, and the transverse and torsional vibrations were simulated. The force on magnet coupling was shown as a form of nonlinear function of the gap and the eccentricity. Also, the form of torque transmitted by magnet coupling was considered as a sinusoidal function. Main spindle connected to a coupling of a follower part was assumed to be a rigid body. Nonlinear partial differential equation was derived to be as a function of angular displacement. By using the equation, torsional vibration analysis of a spindle system with magnet coupling was performed. Free and forced vibration analyses of a spindle system with magnetic coupling were explored by using FEM.
Free vibration characteristics of a cantilevered laminated composite beam with multiple non-propagating transverse open cracks are investigated. In the present analysis a special ply-angle distribution referred to as asymmetric stiffness configuration inducing the elastic coupling between chord-wise bending and extension is considered. The multiple open cracks are modelled as equivalent rotational springs whose spring constants are calculated based on the fracture mechanics of composite material structures. Governing equations of a composite beam with open cracks are derived via Hamilton's Principle and Timoshenko beam theory encompassing transverse shear and rotary inertia effect is adopted. The effects of various parameters such as the ply angle, fiber volume fraction, crack numbers, crack positions and crack depthes on the free vibration characteristics of the beam with multiple cracks are highlighted. The numerical results show that the existence of the multiple cracks in an anisotropic composite beam affects the free vibration characteristics in a more complex fashion compared with the beam with a single crack.
The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.

With the trend towards high propulsive level, increasing ship's dimensions and heavier shaft systems supported by the hull structure of relatively stiffness in modern ships, transverse vibrations of propulsion shaft system have become one of the problems that should be predicted in the early design stage. Regarding transverse vibrations, coupling terms such as oilfilm, gyroscope and hydrodynamic effect of the propeller exist between the vertical and horizontal vibration, furthermore for the shaft system with strut and bossing its physical properties incorporated with hull structure must be considered. In order to predict the transverse vibratory condition of the propulsion shaft and take some appropriate countermeasures, it is necessary to make a fairly strict estimation of the vibratory behaviours of it. In this paper, theoretical approach using the finite element method is investigated to calculate natural frequencies and vibration modes for coupled free transverse vibrations of shaft system in two planes. Based on the method investigated a digital computer program is developed and is applied to calculate the above-mentioned vibrations of an experimental model shaft system. The results of the calculation are compared with those of the experimental measurements and they show an acceptable agreement.
Dynamic response of buried pipelines both in the axial and the transverse directions on concrete pipe and steel pipe, FRP pipe were investigated through a free vibration analysis. End boundary conditions considered herein consist of free ends, fixed ends, and fixed-free ends in the axial and the transverse direction. Guided ends, simply supported ends, and supported-guided ends were added to the transverse direction. The buried pipeline was regarded as a beam on an elastic foundation and the ground displacement of sinusoidal wave was applied to it. Natural frequencies and mode shapes were determined according to end boundary conditions. In addition, the effects of parameters on the natural frequency were evaluated. The natural frequency is affected most significantly by the soil stiffness and the length of the buried pipelines. The natural frequency increases as the soil stiffness increases while it decreases as the length of the buried pipeline increases. Such behavior appears to be dominant in the axial direction rather than in the transverse direction of the buried pipelines.
This paper intends to investigate the effects of speed fluctuation caused by the cogging torque in permanent magnetic motors on the stability of the transverse vibration for a spinning disk. Based on the Kirchhoff\`s plate theory and the assumed mode methods, a set of discretized equations of motion were derived for an annular disk rotating with a harmonically varying speed. Then, a perturbation method using the multiple time scales was employed and stability boundaries were determined explicitly in terms of the magnitude and frequency of speed fluctuation, a nominal sped and the modal characteristics of the disk. It is found that parametric resonance occurs at several speed ranges and a single mode or a combination of two modes are involved to cause instability. It is also observed that unstable regions become broadened as the spinning speed increases or two modes are combined in parametric instability. As numerical simulations, stability analysis of a conventional CD-ROM drive was performed. Results of this work can e used as guidelines for motor design and operations with low vibration.
The structural vibration suppression with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was widely studied recently. However, the literature seldom concerned with the vibration control on flow-induced vibration using active constrained layer. In this paper the wind induced vibration of cantilevered beam is analyzed and suppressed by using random theory together with a velocity feedback control strategy. The piezoelectric material and frequency dependent viscoelastic layer are used to achieve effective active damping in the vibration control. The transverse displacement and velocity in time and frequency domains, as well as the power spectral density and the mean-square value of the transverse displacement and velocity, are formulated under wind pressure at variable control gain. It is observed from the numerical results that the wind induced vibration can be significantly suppressed by using a small outside active voltage on the constrained layer.
