This paper describes a damage accumulation mechanism in cross-ply CFRP laminates $[0_2/90_2]_{2S}$ subjected to out-of-plane loading. Drop-weight impact and static indentation tests were carried out, and induced damage was observed by ultrasonic C-scan and an optical microscope. Both tests gave essentially the same results for damage modes, sizes, and load-deformation history. First, a crack occurred in the bottom $0^{\circ}$ layer accompanying some delamination along the crack caused by bending stress. Then, transverse cracks occurred in the middle $90^{\circ}$ layer with decreasing contact force between the specimen and the indenter. Measured local strains near the impact point showed that the stress state changed from a bending dominant state to an in-plane tensile dominant state. A cohesive interface element was used to simulate the propagation of multiple delaminations and transverse cracks under static indentation. Two types of analytical models are considered, one with multiple delaminations and the other with both multiple delaminations and transverse cracks. The damage obtained for the model with only multiple delaminations was quite different from that obtained from the experiment. However, the results obtained from the model with both delaminations and transverse cracks well explain the characteristics of the damage obtained in the experiment. The existence of the transverse cracks is essential to form the characteristic impact damage.

In this paper, the effects of temperature change on the impact damages of CF/PEEK laminates are experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interfaces$[0^{\circ}_4/90^{\circ}_4]_{9+} A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damage. The delamination damages are oberved by a scanning acoustic microscope. And various relations are experimentally observed including the impact energy vs. delamination area, the specimen temperature vs. transverse crack, and the impact energy vs. residual bending strength of carbon fiber peek composite laminates subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) under high temperatures.
Due to the difficulties associated with the supply of steel plates, hot rolled coil (Steel grade: SM490A) is considered fur structural materials in replace of the existing SWS50A-M1. However, it is found that SM490A exhibits a significant anisotropy in terms of impact energy with respect to transverse and longitudinal directions. In this study, an experimental investigation is carried out to examine the relationship between the anisotropy in impact values and the fatigue strengths of SM490A with respect to the rolling direction of test specimens. All test specimens failed around 1,500,000 cycles regardless of the test specimen direction. Therefore, it is found that the anisotropy in impact energy is not related to the fatigue strength of the materials considered in this study. However, the transverse direction specimen showed more rapid brittle fracture mode compared to that of longitudinal direction specimen, and this appears to be related to the lower impact values in transverse direction.
In this paper, when CF/PEEK laminates for high efficiency space structure are subjected to FOD(Foreign Object Damage), the effects of temperature change on the impact damages(interlaminar separation and transverse crack) of CF/PEEK laminates and the relationship between residual lift and impact damages are experimentally investigated. Composite laminates used in this experiment are CF/PEEK orthotropic laminated plates, which have two-interlaces [$0^{\circ}_4/90^{\circ}_8/0^{\circ}_4$]. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CF/PEEK laminates to generate impact damages. And then CF/PEEK specimens with impact damages are observed by a scanning acoustic microscope under room and high temperatures. In this experimental results, various relations are experimentally observed including the delamination area vs. temperature change, the bending strength vs. impact energy and the residual bending strength vs. impact damage of CF/PEEK laminates.
The denture may be fractured accidentally by an impact while outside the mouth, or may be cracked or broken while in service in the mouth. The latter is generally a fatigue failure caused by repeated flexure over a period of time. This investigation compared the flexural fatigue resistance, the impact force and the transverse strength of two denture base materials with and without the grid strengthener, the T300, the T800 and the Kevlar fiber to evaluate the fracture resistance. The distribution and behavior of fibers across fracture lines were examined by Hi-Scope Compact Microvision System. Through analyses of the data from this study, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. The flexural fatigue resistance, impact strength and transverse strength of high impact strength resin were higher than those of conventional heat polymerizing resin, but statistically there was no significant difference(p>0.05). 2. All specimens with and without the grid strengthener did not show significant differences in the flexural fatigue, the impact and the transverse strength test(p>0.05). 3. All specimens reinforced with the T300, the T800 and the Kevlar fiber showed significant increase of the fatigue resistance and the impact force(p<0.05). 4. All specimens reinforced with the T800 and the Kevlar fiber showed significant increase of the transverse strength(p<0.05). 5. All specimens reinforced with the T300, the T800 and the Kevlar fiber exhibited greenstick fractures. The fibers tended to remain enveloped in the resin, resisting pull-out.

An investigation was performed to study the matrix cracking and delamination in laminated composite plates due to transverse impact. A model was developed for predicting the initiation of the matrix cracking and the shape and size of impact-induced delamination in laminated composite plates resulting from the ballistic impact. The model consists of a stress analysis and a failure analysis. A transient finite element analysis which was based on the higher-order shear deformation theory was adopted for calculating the stresses inside the laminated composite plates during impact. A failure analysis was used to predict the initial intraply matrix cracking and the shape and size of the interface delamination in the laminates. As a results, a shear matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse interlaminar shear stress occured at the middle layer near the midplane of laminates and a bending matrix cracking which was governed by the transverse inplane stress occured at the bottom layer near the surface of laminates. In a thick laminates, a shear matrix cracking generated first at the middle layer of laminates, but in a thin laminates, a bending matrix cracking generated first at the bottom layer of laminates.

The formulation of a new bridge-vehicle system using shell with eccentric beam elements has been introduced in a companion paper (Part I). The new system takes into account of the contribution of the twisting and pitching modes of vehicles to the bridge responses. It can also be used to study the dynamic transverse load distribution of a bridge. This paper presents a parametric study on the impact induced by one vehicle or multi-vehicle running across a bridge using the proposed model. Several parameters were considered as variables including the mass ratio, the speed parameter, the frequency ratio and the axle spacing parameter to investigate their effects on the impact factor. A total number of 189 cases were carried out in this parametric study. Within the realistic range of vehicle considered, the maximum impact factors could be 2.24, 1.78 and 1.49 for bridges with spans 10 m, 20 m and 30 m respectively.
This study presents an experimental and numerically study about the effects of fiber reinforcement ratio on the behavior of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) under dynamic impact loading. In literature have examined the behavior of GFRP and FRP wrapped strengthened CFST elements impact loads. However, since the direction of potential impact force isn't too exact, there is always the probability of not being matched the impact force of the area where the reinforced. Therefore, instead of the fiber textile wrapping method which strengthens only a particular area of CFST element, we used fiber-added concrete-filled elements which allow strengthening the whole element. Thus, the effect of fiber-addition in concrete on the behavior of CFST elements under impact loads was examined. To do so, six simply supported CFST beams were constructed with none fiber, 2% fiber and 10% fiber reinforcement ratio on the concrete part of the CFST beam. CFST beams were examined under two different impact loads (75 kg and 225 kg). The impactors hit the beam from a 2000 mm free fall during the experimental study. Numerical models of the specimens were created using ABAQUS finite element software and validated with experimental data. The obtained results such as; mid-span displacement, acceleration, failure modes and energies from experimental and numerical studies were compared and discussed. Furthermore, the Von Misses stress distribution of the CFST beams with different ratio of fiber reinforcements were investigated numerically. To sum up, there is an optimum amount limit of the fiber reinforcement on CFST beams. Up to this limit, the fiber reinforcement increases the structural performances of the beam, beyond that limit the fiber reinforcement decreases the performances of the CFST beam under transverse impact loadings.
The impact behavior of a multigirder concrete bridge under single and multiple moving vehicles is studied based on correlated road surface characteristics. The bridge structure is modeled as grillage beam system. A 3D nonlinear vehicle model with eleven degrees of freedom is utilized according to the HS20-44 truck design loading in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. A triangle correlation model is introduced to generate four classes of longitudinal road surface roughness as multi-correlated random processes along deck transverse direction. On the basis of a correlation length of approximately half the bridge width, the upper limits of impact factors obtained under confidence level of 95 percent and side-by-side three-truck loading provide probability-based evidence for the evaluation of AASHTO specifications. The analytical results indicate that a better transverse correlation among road surface roughness generally leads to slightly higher impact factors. Suggestions are made for the routine maintenance of this type of highway bridges.
This paper is to study the energy absorption characteristics of CF/Epoxy(Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin) laminated shell with the various curvatures subjected to transverse impact loadings under the low impact velocity in consideration of design of structural members for use of transportation machine, which are consisted of the characteristics of high stiffness, strength and lightweight. The curvature radius are associated with the energy absorption characteristics of CF/Epoxy laminated shell which is brittleness material. In all tests, maximum load of CF/Epoxy laminated plate is higher than that of laminated shell with curvature, but maximum deflection is lower. And then absorbed energy of laminated shell with curvature is higher than laminated plate(curvature radius is unlimited), As curvature radius is increased, the absorbed energy is increased in laminated shell with curvature.
