  • Optimum design of flow channel in the separation plate of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell is very prerequisite to reduce concentration over potential at high current region and remove the water generated in cathode effectively. In this paper, fully 3 dimensional computational model which solves anode and cathode flow fields simultaneously is developed in order to compare the performance of fuel cell with parallel and interdigitated flow channels. Oxygen and water concentration and pressure drop are calculated and i-V performance characteristics are compared between flows with two flow channels. Results show that performance of fuel cell with interdigitated flow channel is hi민or than that with parallel flow channel at high current region because hydrogen and oxygen in interdigitated flow channel are transported to catalyst layer effectively due to strong convective transport through gas diffusion layer but pressure drop is larger than that in parallel flow channel. Therefore Trade-off between power gain and pressure loss should be considered in design of fuel cell with interdigitated flow channel.

  • Graphene, hexagonal network of carbon atoms forming a one-atom thick planar sheet, has been emerged as a fascinating material for future nanoelectronics. Huge attention has been captured by its extraordinary electronic properties, such as bipolar conductance, half integer quantum Hall effect at room temperature, ballistic transport over ${\sim}0.4{\mu}m$ length and extremely high carrier mobility at room temperature. Several approaches have been developed to produce graphene, such as micromechanical cleavage of highly ordered pyrolytic graphite using adhesive tape, chemical reduction of exfoliated graphite oxide, epitaxial growth of graphene on SiC and single crystalline metal substrate, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis. In particular, direct synthesis of graphene using metal catalytic substrate in CVD process provides a new way to large-scale production of graphene film for realization of graphene-based electronics. In this method, metal catalytic substrates including Ni and Cu have been used for CVD synthesis of graphene. There are two proposed mechanism of graphene synthesis: carbon diffusion and precipitation for graphene synthesized on Ni, and surface adsorption for graphene synthesized on Cu, namely, self-limiting growth mechanism, which can be divided by difference of carbon solubility of the metals. Here we present that large area, uniform, and layer controllable graphene synthesized on Cu catalytic substrate is achieved by acetylene-assisted CVD. The number of graphene layer can be simply controlled by adjusting acetylene injection time, verified by Raman spectroscopy. Structural features and full details of mechanism for the growth of layer controllable graphene on Cu were systematically explored by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy.

  • The objective of this study is to examine validation of Grid Reconstruction Method, which is developed to simulate drying/wetting in complex natural rivers with wetting and drying domain areas. To verify application of the developed model, the model was applied to natural rivers with wetting and drying domain areas such as Han river and Nakdong river. The simulation results have shown good agreements with observed data and the results for the developed model were more accurate and improved stability of numerical computation than those of RMA-2 model. If the analysis of contaminant advection-diffusion and sediment transport are performed with the study results, the results can be effectively applied to river flow analysis and ecological hydraulics.

  • This study involves enhancing the performance of the $Na(Li,Ti)O_2$ system as an Na-ion battery anode with the addition of Mg, which partially replaces Li ions. We perform both computational and experimental approaches to achieve a higher reversible capacity and a faster transport of Na ions for the devised system. Computational results indicate that the $Na(Li,Mg,Ti)O_2$ system can provide a lower-barrier path for Na-ion diffusion than can a system without the addition of Mg. Experimentally, we synthesize various $Na_z(Li_y,Mg_x,Ti)O_2$ systems and evaluate their electrochemical characteristics. In agreement with the theoretical study, Mg addition to such systems improves general cell performance. For example, the prepared $Na_{0.646}(Li_{0.207}Mg_{0.013}Ti_{0.78})O_2$ system displays an increase in reversible capacity of 8.5% and in rate performance of 13.5%, compared to those characteristics of a system without the addition of Mg. Computational results indicate that these improvements can be attributed to the slight widening of the Na-$O_6$ layer in the presence of Mg in the $(Li,Ti)O_6$ layer.

  • This paper presents the flow and the suspended sediment movement over ripples for oscillatory flows. A new numerical model system is developed, and applied to a laboratory experimental condition of regular waves and a fictitious condition of irregular waves. The flow field is obtained from a programme proposed by Kim et. al.(1994), which is a modified version of SOLA based on SMAC scheme. The sub-model solves the continuity and Reynolds momentum equations in the x-z plane. The wave orbital velocities, shear stresses, and pressure are all reasonably reproduced by the model. The model results on the vertical velocity component show good agreement with the measurements. The suspended sediment transport sub-model is newly set up to solve the advection-diffusion equation of suspended sediment using a split method, and involving a special shear entrainment from the whole ripple surface. The calculated suspended sediment concentrations for regular waves show reasonable agreement with measurements at Deltaflume. The model results for random waves show that the suspended sediment concentration is higher than those for regular waves and that the sediment diffuses higher than for regular waves with the significant wave height and the peak wave period of the irregular waves.

  • A souce term model describes mathematically the source of radionuclides as they begin slow migration and decay in deep groundwater. Various source term models based on mass-transfer analysis and measurement-based source term models are reviewed. Ganerally, two processes are involved in leaching or dissolution: (1) chemical reactions and (2) mass transfer by diffusion. The chemical reaction controls the dissolution rates only during the early stage of exposure to groundwater. The exterior-field mass transfer may control the long term dissolution rates from the waste solid in a geologic repository. Mass-transfer analyses re3y on detailed and careful application of the governing equations that describe the mechanistic processes of transport of material between and within phases. If used correctly, source term models based on mass-transfer theory are valuable and necessary tools for developing reliable predictions.

  • For an accurate prediction of the temperature field induced by heated water discharged into a shallow crossflow, a two-dimensional near-field numerical model is developed. It is based on a 4-equation turbulence model in which the transport equations for mean of the temperature fluctuation squared and its dissipation rate are added to those of a 2-equation turbulence model which cannot give the information of the thermal time scale ratio. Vertical diffusion is also considered by including buoyancy production and turbulence heat flux terms. The developed model is applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simple geometry and the results are compared with existing experimental data and those of the already established 2-equation turbulence model. Numerical results of the model agree with the experimental data better than those of the 2-equation model. The present model also simulates quite adequately the physical characteristics of thermal discharge in the jet entrainment and stable regions.

  • The numerical simulation of wind and ozone ($O_3$) transport in mountainous regions was performed with a computational fluid dynamics technique. A dry deposition model for $O_3$ was designed to estimate $O_3$ deposition in complex terrain, and the qualitative validity of the predicted $O_3$ concentration field was confirmed by comparison with observed data collected with passive samplers. The simulation revealed that wind velocity increases around ridge lines and peaks of mountains. The areas with strong wind corresponded well with the sites of tree decline at high altitudes, suggesting that it is an important factor in the localization of tree/forest decline. On the other hand, there is no direct relationship between forest decline and $O_3$ concentration. The $O_3$ concentration, however, tends to increase as wind velocity becomes higher, thus the $O_3$ concentration itself may be a potential secondary factor in the localized decline phenomena. While the diffusion flux of $O_3$ is not related to localized tree decline, the pattern of advection flux is related to those of high wind velocity and localized tree decline. These results suggest that strong wind with large advection flux of $O_3$ may play a key role in the promotion of tree/forest decline at high mountain ridges and peaks.

  • Flow field is an important parameter for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance to have an effect on the reactant supply, heat and water diffusion, and contact resistance. In this study, PEMFC performance was investigated using Cu foam flow field at the cathode of 25 cm2 unit cell. Polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed at different pressure and relative humidity conditions. The Cu foam showed lower cell performance than that of serpentine type due to its high ohmic resistance, but lower activation and concentration loss due to the even reactant distribution of porous structure. Cu foam has the advantage of effective water transport because of its hydrophobicity. However, it showed low membrane hydration at low humidity condition. The metal foam flow field could improve fuel cell performance with a uniform pressure distribution and effective water management, so future research on the properties of metal foam should be conducted to reduce electrical resistance of bipolar plate.

  • In this study, a numerical model of debris flow considering driftwood and entrainment erosion is developed. Subsequently, numerical simulations based on the observation data of the 2011 Mt. Umyeon are performed. To develop the debris flow model, the Nays2DFlood model, which is a flooding model based on the shallow water equation, is coupled with the transport diffusion of mixed sediment concentration, debris flow bottom shear stress, and entrainment erosion modules. The simulation closely reproduced the depth, flow velocity, and debris flow volume of Mt. Umyeon. In addition, the reproducibility of the simulation result with driftwood is more accurate than that without driftwood. The results of this study can facilitate in establishing measures to reduce debris disasters, thus alleviating the current increase in debris damage due to climate change.
