Aerodynamic characteristics for a launch vehicle are numerically analyzed with various conditions. The local drag coefficients are high at the nose of the launch vehicle in subsonic region and on the main body in supersonic region because of the induced drag and the wave drag, respectively. The drag coefficients show the similar trend with the angle of attack except zero degree. However, the more the angle of attack increases, the more dependent on the Mach number the lift coefficient is. The body rotation for the flight stability destroys the vortex pair formed above the body opposite to the flight direction, so the flow fields are more or less complicated. The drag coefficient of the launch vehicle at sea level is about three times larger than that at altitude 7.2 km. And the thrust jet at the nozzle causes to reduce the drag coefficient compared with the jetless transonic flight.

Exhaust plume effects on longitudinal aerodynamics of missile were investigated by wind tunnel tests using a solid plume simulator and CFD analyses with both the solid plume and air jet plumes. Approximate plume boundary prediction technique was used to produce the outer shape of the solid plumer and chamber conditions and nozzle shapes of the air jet plumes were determined through plume modeling technique to compensate the difference in thermodynamic properties between air and real plume. From comparisons among turbulence models in case of external flow interaction with the air jet plume, Spalart-Allmaras model turned out to give accurate result and to be less grid-dependent. Effects induced by the plume were evaluated through the computations with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the air jet plume to account for various ratios of chamber and ambient pressure and Reynolds number under the flight test condition.

This paper performed the prediction of the acoustic loads applied to the surface of the flight vehicle during flight. Acoustic loads during flight arise from the pressure fluctuations on the surface of body. The conventional method of predicting the acoustic loads in flight uses semi-empirical method derived from theoretical and experimental results. However, there is a limit in obtaining the flow characteristics and the boundary layer parameters of the flight vehicle which are used as the input values of the empirical equation through experiments. Therefore, in this paper, we use the hybrid method which combines the results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with semi-empirical methods to predict the acoustic loads acting on flight vehicle during flight. For the flight vehicle with cone-cylinder-flare shape, acoustic loads were estimated for the subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and Max-q (Maximum dynamic pressure) condition flight. For the hybrid method, two kind of boundary layer edge estimation methods based on CFD results are compared and the acoustic loads prediction results were compared according to empirical equations presented by various researchers.

A numerical study was carried out to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the supersonic grid fins installed on SpaceX Falcon 9. The unit-grid-fin concept was utilized for more efficient and simpler 3-D steady flow calculations. Pre- and post-correction processes that accounted the interference effects by the angle of attack of the missile, the influences of the outer frame of the grid fin and the connecting rods were improved in the study, and it was demonstrated that the present correction method was more accurate as compared to previous studies. Finally, the present approach was applied to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics in transonic/supersonic flights of SpaceX Falcon 9 with various angle of attacks.

In the present study, unsteady flows around a projectile ejected from an aircraft platform have been numerically investigated by using a three dimensional compressible RANS flow solver based on unstructured meshes. The relative motion between the platform and projectile was described by six degrees of freedom(6DOF) equations of motion with Euler angles and a chimera technique. Initial behavior of the projectile for varying conditions, such as roll and pitch-yaw command on the control surface of the projectile, flight Mach number, and platform pitch angle, was investigated. The ejection stability of the projectile was degraded as Mach number increases. In the transonic condition, the initial behavior of the projectile was found to be unstable as increase of platform pitch angle. By applying the command to control surfaces of the projectile, initial stability was highly enhanced. It was concluded that the proposed simulation data are useful for estimating the ejection behavior of a projectile in design phase.
