  • This paper proposes the mechanism which improves the qualify of video on a limited network bandwidth by applying the ROI technique to an H.264 Scalable Extension technique. The network environment assumed in this parer is the next generation network convergence environment in which the mobile device has one or more network interfaces. Therefore, we allocate the priority to video packets as the hierarchy structure of H.264 SVC-encoded video stream and ROI information, and transmit those packets over appropriate network channel for using those multiple network interfaces. This paper shows two experiments first one is extracting and allocating the video stream on an appropriate network channel, second one is unequal packet transmission by allocated priorities (e.g. ROI). Performance evaluations show that this approach delivers an improved decoded video quality when compared with conventional transmission schemes, especially on device which has multiple network interfaces.

  • Due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and wireless broadband networks, there has been a significant increase in interest and demand for multimedia streaming services. Moreover, the user can service the participatory video broadcasting service in the mobile device and it can be used to deliver the real-time news and more variety information in the user side. Live multimedia service of user participation should consider not only the video quality but also the delay bounds and continuity of video playback for improving the user perceived QoS (Quality of Service) of streaming service. In this paper, we propose an adaptive rate control scheme, called DeBuG (Delay Bounds Guaranteed), to guarantee the delay bounds and continuity of video playback for the real-time streaming in mobile devices. In order to provide those, the proposed scheme has a quality adaptation function based on the transmission buffer status and network status awareness. It also has a selective frame dropper, which is based on the media priority, before the transmission video frames. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

  • In typical video streaming services such as MPEG encoded video, the transmission data sizes change depending on the frame types and the required bandwidth for QoS support also changes as time passes. Accordingly, in video streaming services using the Internet it could happen that the video services stop occasionally due to instantaneous deficiencies of the required bandwidth under unexpected congestion even if the highest priority is allocated to the service by network administration. In this paper, we investigate several methods for bandwidth allocation and traffic engineering to support MPEG video traffic and propose a new method to reduce the transmission delay and enhance the throughput, there by provisioning the QoS requirements. In the proposed scheme, LSPs are established based on temporal variation patterns of the Internet traffic and the CQ_LLQ policing scheme is applied for traffic shaping at the ingress routers. Finally we verified the performance of the proposed scheme via computer simulations using OPNET.

  • This paper proposes a new multiuser scheduling algorithm that can simultaneously support a variety of different quality-of-service (QoS) user groups while satisfying fairness among users in the same QoS group in MIMO broadcast channels. Toward this goal, the proposed algorithm consists of two parts: a QoS-aware fair (QF) scheduling within a QoS group and an antenna trade-off scheme between different QoS groups. The proposed QF scheduling algorithm finds a user set from a certain QoS group which can satisfy the fairness among users in terms of throughput or delay. The antenna trade-off scheme can minimize the QoS violations of a higher priority user group by trading off the number of transmit antennas allocated to different QoS groups. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed QF scheduling method satisfies different types of fairness among users and can adjust the degree of fairness among them. The antenna trade-off scheme combined with QF scheduling can improve the probability of QoS-guaranteed transmission when supporting different QoS groups.

  • In this paper, we consider a wireless multimedia environment to service both real-time video traffic and non-real-time WWW-application traffic In our suggested new packet scheduling algorithm, we consider both the accumulation counter and SIR to reduce delay in real-time traffic. In addition, our packet scheduling algorithm gives priority first to real-time video traffic service and then to non-real-time internet Packet service when real-time traffic service is absent. From the simulation results, we find that the AC (Accumulation Counter) scheme has much smaller delay than the conversional M-LWDF scheme for real-time video data users, which has a special quality sensitive to its own delay. We also consider the transmission structure of using both the frame period in the time-axis and the OVSF codes in the code-axis at the same time, which is similar to the structure of HSDPA system.

  • Today, Hospital Information System that integrates ubiquitous technologies are introduced in limited basis due to problems like standardization and limits on medical use, where responsibilities lie, legal safeguard on transmission, invasion of privacy etc. Particularly, problems like absence of tag design suitable for medical environment, compatibility issue with previous medical information system. In order to solve such problems, we have designed medical tags for the first time that are consistent with future ubiquitous environment by deciding on medically suitable field with 96bit tag offered by EFC as its base. Second, improving on previous multi-tag recognizing crash prevention algorithm, we have designed a priority anti-collision algorithm that reflects priorities on the needs in medical environment.

  • In H.264, three different data partition types are used, which have unequal importance to the reconstructed video quality. To improve the performance of H.264 video streaming transmission over IEEE 802.11e Wireless Local Area Networks, a prioritization mechanism that categorizes different partition types to different priority classes according to the calculated distortion within one Group of Pictures. In the proposed scheme, video streams have been encoded based on the H.264 codec with its data partition enabled. The dynamic scheduling scheme based on Enhanced Distributed Channel Access has been configured to differentiate the data partitions according to their distortion impact and the queue utilization ratio. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the received video quality by 1dB in PSNR compared with the existing Enhanced Distributed Channel Access static mapping scheme.

  • There is a serious unfairness problem between upstream and downstream flows of AP in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN. This problem is because Wireless LAN's DCF MAC protocol provides AP with equal channel access priority to mobile noded. Also, it makes this problem worse that the TCP's Data segment loss is more effective on throughput than the TCP's ACK segment. In this paper, we first make several simulations to analysis the unfairness in the various point of view and to find reasons of the unfairness. Also, this paper presents AP's scheduling scheme to alleviate the unfairness problem and evaluate the scheme through ns2 simulator.

  • We investigate the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes concatenated with hierarchical QAM for designing a cross-layer unequal error protection scheme for H.264 coded sequences. We first divide the H.264 encoded video slices into three priority classes based on their relative importance. We investigate the system constraints and propose an optimization formulation to compute the optimal parameters of the proposed system for the given source significance information. An upper bound to the significance-weighted bit error rate in the proposed system is derived as a function of system parameters, including the code rate and geometry of the constellation. An example is given with design rules for H.264 video communications and 3.5-4 dB PSNR improvement over existing RCPC based techniques for AWGN wireless channels is shown through simulations.
