  • A nonlinear programming model for evaluating public transit fare system is proposed. The model finds transit fare level and the structure that maximizes gross fare-box revenue subject to constraints on minimum ridership and the form of the fare equations. It is assumed that the demand for transit is a function of fare and its own-fare elasticity. It is assumed that the demand for transit is a function of fare and its own-fare elasticity. It is also assumed that the conditions including fare of the other modes are unchanged ; i.e., partial equilibrium. Empirical study has been performed for the case of Seoul subway system. This study includes an analysis of fare structure ; flat system and distance-based fare system. Sensitivity and comperative static analysis for elasticity has been also demonstrated.

  • The safety of staff, customers and of general Public in general viewed as one of the most important requirements in the urban transit. The maintenance computerization system for car of urban transit is a part of standardization and development of urban transit system, and We have been performed the establishment of maintenance computerization system from 2001 to 2005. The RAMS(reliability, availability, maintainability and safety) estimation for maintenance computerization system are utilized in a variety of computerization system for user's convenience and safety in maintenance. Ever since its inception though, the urban transit has searched for ways to improve reliability, availability, maintainability and safety of the railway subsystem. Provision of a reliable maintenance system include RAMS of the vehicles plays a very important role in achieving a safe system.

  • Urban transit is a large scaled complex system which combines rolling stocks, power supply, signal communications, tracks & stations etc. KRRI develops nine key devices since July, 2007 as a part of the second phase of project on the standardization of urban rail transit system, which include information-communication system, station facilities, AC-DC current electric power system in urban transit. We promote the project under two directions, i.e. user-customer oriented standardization and strategic standardization for leading technologies in urban transit. In this paper, we present development plan of these key systems in view of system life cycle based on system engineering standards KSX ISO/IEC 15288 which supplies the common fundamental frame to describe the life cycle of artificial systems. System engineering process of KSX ISO/IEC 15288 are helpful to efficiently develop those key devices, although it is difficult to apply the standard identically to the key devices with the varieties and characteristics.

  • Urban rail transit offers target performance and function because various lower part system such as rolling-stock, signal, power and trackis consisted as complex. In order to function properly an urban rail transit which is complicated system to work as safety and reliability, System must secure safety with structure, design, manufacture, install and verification and it is important to establish a safety standard follows it procedures, establish what step all it is important to operate. Safety standard of urban transit infrastructure is minimum standard necessary to secure safety of signal, power and track. Urban rail transit standard business leads to make many requirements. Recently, many types of equipment have applied to manage requirements and standards for system efficiently in part of universal, airline and car accordingly applied equipments use to manage a pursuit(Trace) between standard of system. Especially importance of management is emphasized more become more. Importance of standard management which usesa computing support tool recently in transit filed is embossed and is predicted to be more such forward. Therefore we propose the effective method of management with infrastructure system by constructed data-base system.

  • Urban transit is one of the most effective ways for efficient operation and construction of an urban transit by composition system which is liked originally such as rolling-stock, power, signal and infrastructure. Urban rail transit system is running in domestic, imports major equipments from advanced countries and setup for maintenance. But it takes long time because it does each organizations and lines. Also, signal, power and track system apply different standard by each construction organizations it causes an increasing construction of cost accordingly it desperately needs a systematic countermeasure. Therefore standard specification of urban transit have been establishing and operatingfor efficient operation of urban transit and base technology security that is populace ride to become a base of state economy. After track, power and signal system will be announced. Standard specification become more, the importance of administrationof standards is emphasized more. Specification administrator’s the importance which use a computing support tool recently in railroad part in embossed and is predicted to be more such forward. Therefore we propose the effective method of management with track, power signal system by constructed data-base system.

  • To increase the demand of HR Plate with thickness up to 22mm, it is necessary that HR Plate is applicable to full member in steel bridge including main girder. In this study, availabilities of the narrow steel box girder of light railway transit with HR Plate width as a main member are discussed. Computational analysis is performed in 15 bridge models of light railway transit with beam element and plate element. As an analysis results, three models in tight railway transit are presented. In conclusion, it is validated that HR Plate can be applying to narrow steel box girder in the light railway transit.

  • Determining stop spacing is a very important process in transit system planning. This study is involved in an analytical approach to decide the transit stop spacing. Transit stop spacing should be longer as 1) user access speed, 2) user travel time, and 3) dwell time increase, and shorter as 1) passengers (boardings and alightings) and 2) headway increase. In this study, a methodology is proposed to determine transit stop spacing to minimize total cost (user cost plus operator cost) with irregular passenger distribution (boardings and alightings) Without considering in-vehicle passengers, the transit stop spacing should be shorter in the concentrated sections of the passenger distribution than in others to minimize total cost. Through the conceptual analysis, it is verified that the transit stop spacing could be longer as the in-vehicle passengers increase in certain sections. This study proposes a simple practical method to determine transit stop spacing and locations instead of a dynamic programming method which generally includes a complex and difficult calculation. If the space axis is changed to a time axis. the methodology of this study could be expanded to analyze a solution for the transit service (or headway) schedule problem.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of public transit accessibility on the Carsharing use demand. By utilizing the rental historical DB of Greencar which is operated in Suwon city and public transit GIS DB, the use demand models for Carsharing by rental offices are built and analyzed in accordance with public transit accessibility. The result indicates 73% of walking as a majority, 3% cycling, and 20% using buses and urban railways to access Carsharing rental offices. The goodness of fit of Carsharing use models reflecting accessibility to buses and railways is verified as 0.818 which proves that public transit accessibility is a significant variable. Therefore, it is verified that installing Carsharing rental offices where public transit transfer is convenient can possibly increase the use demand. Especially, while accessibility to buses is verified as a significant variable out of other public transit means, the accessibility to urban railways is verified as not significant. This suggests that a variety of complementary policies such as transfer discount policy and one-way transfer return policy are necessary in between urban railways and Carsharing in order to promote mutual use demand in accordance with the other public transit means. This study result is yet the basic research on Carsharing, however it is expected to contribute to improvement of transfer demand in between different public transit means.

  • One of the efforts both to prevent urban sprawling development patterns and to promote use of public transportation is known as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), including such planning elements as the density and diversity of land use and pedestrian-friendly urban design around a transit center. The aim of this study is thus to conduct impact analyses of TOD planning elements on transit ridership in the Seoul rail station areas. First, the authors investigate and draw out various actual elements of TOD planning by using GIS-based data and Smart Card data. Then the authors analyze impacts of TOD planning elements on transit ridership for the Seoul rail station areas. After condensing 34 variables presumably influencing transit ridership into seven factors by using factor analyses, the study utilizes multiple regression modeling methods to identify their impacts on transit ridership. The analysis results demonstrate that transit ridership tends to increase more in rail station areas where there is a non-residential high density, mixed use of land and narrow and small-size road network patterns. The implementation of TODs should be a useful method in inducing a Transit-Oriented City through redevelopment and new development.
