  • A thermal-hydraulic code, named CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows in nuclear reactor components. A two-fluid three-field model was used for steam-water two-phase flows. To obtain numerical solutions, the finite volume method was applied over unstructured cell-centered meshes. In steam-water two-phase flows, a phase change, i.e., evaporation or condensation, results in a great change in the flow field because of substantial density difference between liquid and vapor phases. Thus, two-phase flows are very sensitive to the local pressure distribution that determines the phase change. This in turn puts emphasis on the accurate evaluation of local pressure gradient. This paper presents a new reconstruction method to evaluate the pressure gradient at cell centers on unstructured meshes. The results of the new scheme for a simple test function, a gravity-driven cavity, and a wall boiling two-phase flow are compared with those of the previous schemes in the CUPID code.

  • This paper analyses the transient response of a spherical elastic shell located near fee surface and impinged by spherical step-exponential acoustic shock waves. The problem is solved through extension of a method (Huang, 1969) previously formulated for the excitation in an infinite domain, which employs the classical separation of variables, series solutions, and Laplace transform technique The effect of the free surface reflection is taken into account using the image source method. The reflection of the incident wave has been treated by the same image formulation. If the reflection of the pressure field scattered and radiated by the shell is considered, the problem becomes that of multiple scattering by two spheres. However, this is in general negligible considering errors inherent from other sources and that the scattered and radiated pressure waves emanating from the shell are small. Thus, the problem is reduced to that of a structure immersed in an infinite fluid and impinged upon the origin and the image incident.

  • The objective of this work is not only to perform feasibility studies on the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis for the capillary system design but also to provide an enhanced understanding of the autonomous capillary flow. The capillary flow is evaluated by means of the commercial CFD software of FLUENT, which includes the VOF (volume-of-fluid) model for multiphase flow analysis. The effect of wall adhesion at fluid interfaces in contact with rigid boundaries is considered in terms of static contact angle. Feasibility studies are first performed, including mesh-resolution influence on pressure profile, which has a sudden increase at the liquid/gas interface. Then we perform both 2D and 3D simulations and examine the transient nature of the capillary flow. Analytical solutions are also derived for simple cases and compared with numerical results. Through this work, essential information on the capillary system design is brought out. Our efforts and initial success in numerical description of the microfluidic capillary flows enhance the fundamental understanding of the autonomous capillary flow and will eventually pave the road for full-scale, computer-aided design of microfluidic networks.

  • Pendulums can be used as passive vibration control devices in several structures and machines. In the present work, the nonlinear behavior of a pendulum-tower system is studied. The tower is modeled as a bar with variable cross-section with concentrated masses. First, the vibration modes and frequencies of the tower are obtained analytically. The primary structure and absorber together constitute a coupled system which is discretized as a two degrees of freedom nonlinear system, using the normalized eigenfunctions and the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The analysis shows the influence of the geometric nonlinearity of the pendulum absorber on the response of the tower. A parametric analysis also shows that, with an appropriate choice of the absorber parameters, a pendulum can decrease the vibration amplitudes of the tower in the main resonance region. The results also show that the pendulum nonlinearity cannot be neglected in this type of problem, leading to multiplicity of solutions, dynamic jumps and instability. In order to improve the effectiveness of the control during the transient response, a hybrid control system is suggested. The added control force is implemented as a non-linear variable stiffness device based on position and velocity feedback. The obtained results show that this strategy of nonlinear control is attractive, has a good potential and can be used to minimize the response of slender structures under various types of excitation.

  • We have investigated the transient behavior of 1D fully developed Poiseuille viscoelastic flow under finite pressure gradient described by the Oldroyd-B and Leonov constitutive equations. For analysis we employ a simple $2^{nd}$ order discretization scheme such as central difference for space and the Crank-Nicolson for time approximation. For the analysis of the Oldroyd-B model, we also apply the analytical solution, which is obtained again in this work in terms of elementary solution procedure simpler than the previous one (Waters and King, 1970). Both models demonstrate qualitatively similar solutions, but their eventual steady flowrate exhibits noticeable difference due to the absence or presence of shear thinning behavior. In the inertialess flow, the flowrate instantaneously attains a large value corresponding to the Newtonian creeping flow and then decreases to its steady value when the applied pressure gradient is low. However with finite liquid density the flow field shows severe fluctuation even accompanying reversals of flow directions. As the assigned pressure gradient increases, the flowrate achieves its steady value significantly higher than its value during oscillations after quite long period of time. We have also illustrated comparison between 1D and 2D results and possible mechanism of complex 2D flow rearrangement employing a previous solution of [mite element computation. In addition, we discuss some mathematical points regarding missing boundary conditions in 2D modeling due to the change of the type of differential equations when varying from inertialess to inertial flow.

  • Hemodynamics of the TPLS(Twin Pulse Life Support System) is numerically investigated to delineate the possibility of hemolysis in blood. Computational method employing finite element algorithm is utilized to solve the blood flow of the sac squeezed by moving actuator. We assume that the blood flow interacts with the sac material which is activated by the rigid body motion of the actuator. Valve dynamics at the ends of the sac is simplified as on/off type motion. We compute the transient viscous flow in the two-dimensional geometry of the blood sac. Incompressible laminar flow is simulated on the assumption of Newtonian fluid. Blood velocity has a step gradient near the throat of the sac formed by the moving actuator. According to the decrease of the gap size of blood passage, the magnitude of shear stress in the blood is dramatically increased. Numerical solutions show that the maximum value of shear stress in the blood flow in TPLS is relatively smaller than that of the roller type ECLS.

  • The theory of Fourier heat conduction predicts accurately the temperature profiles of a system in a non-equilibrium steady state. However, in the case of transient states at the nanoscale, its applicability is significantly limited. The limitation of the classical Fourier's theory was overcome by C. Cattaneo and P. Vernotte who developed the theory of non-Fourier heat conduction in 1958. Although this new theory has been used in various thermal science areas, it requires considerable mathematical skills for calculating analytical solutions. The aim of this study was the identification of a newer and a simpler type of solution for the hyperbolic partial differential equations of the non-Fourier heat conduction. This constitutes the first trial in a series of planned studies. By inspecting each term included in the proposed solution, the theoretical feasibility of the solution was achieved. The new analytical solution for the non-Fourier heat conduction is a simple exponential function that is compared to the existing data for justification. Although the proposed solution partially satisfies the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation, it cannot simulate a thermal wave behavior. However, the results of this study indicate that it is possible to obtain the theoretical solution of the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation by improving the form of the proposed solution.

  • A camera module that gathers visual information via aerial observation reconnaissance is equipped inside a gimbal structure. This gimbal structure system must reduce dynamic responses in order to obtain clear images under all circumstances. Among many design specifications for this system, there is MIL-STD-810G as a shock standard. This specification indicates a limitation of the acceleration of the camera module under a base shock excitation on the gimbal structure. The satisfaction of this condition can usually be proved by experiment, because it includes bearings and dynamic isolators made of rubber. Numerical analysis must be proposed for design improvement of the gimbal structure. To achieve this goal, transient response analysis for the base shock excitation was performed using the finite element method. Experimental results were compared with numerical solutions and it is shown that the present method is useful.

  • As there are many advantages on underground caverns, such as safety and operation, they can also be used for gas storage purpose. When liquefied gas is stored underground, the cryogenic temperature of the gas will affect the stability of the storage cavern. In order to store the liquefied gas successfully, it is essential to estimate the exact temperature distribution of the rock mass around the cavern. In this study, an analytic solution and a conceptual model that can estimate three-dimensional temperature distribution around the storage cavern are suggested. When calculating the heat transfer within a solid, it is likely to consider the solid as the intersection of two or more infinite or semi-infinite geometries. Therefore heat transfer solution for the solid is expressed by the product of the dimensionless temperatures of the geometries, which are used to form the combined solid. Based on the multi-dimensional transient heat transfer theory, the analytic solution is successfully derived by assuming the cavern shape to be of simplified geometry. Also, a conceptual model is developed by using the analytic solution of this study. By performing numerical experiments of this multi-dimensional model, the temperature distribution of the analytic solution is compared with that of numerical analysis and theoretical solutions.
