The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three sequential modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) where coupled CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with thermodynamics are combined to realistically model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS (2003) FE code is used with external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts in order to describe the specific heat temperature nonlinear dependency that drastically affects the transient thermal solution especially for concrete materials. User subroutines are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented third Cardington fire test.
This article deals with the transient analysis using multi-flexible body dynamics of a trailer vehicle, which is passing a bump on the flat road. In order to investigate the transient dynamic behavior of the trailer, we developed an equivalent finite element model for the trailer and a vehicle dynamic model for the truck using multi-body dynamics. The driving condition considered here is set as the trailer vehicle passes a bump on the flat road in 7km/h. And we investigate the time histories of vertical load and deflections on connecting points between the trailer and truck during the vehicle passes a bump. Due to the dynamic load resulted from the driving condition, additional stress concentrations are found in the trailer and the suspension connecting points between the trailer and rear axles along with kingpin.

Virtual computer numerical control(VCNC) arises from the concept that one can experience pseudo-real machining with a computer-numerically-controlled(CNC) machine before actually cutting an object. To achieve accurate VCNC, it is important to determine abnormal behavior, such as chatter, before cutting. Detecting chatter requires an understanding of the dynamic cutting force model. In general, the cutting process is a closed loop system that consists of structural and cutting dynamics. Machining instability, namely chatter, results from the interaction between these two dynamics. Several previous reports have predicted stability for a single path, using a simple cutting force model without tool runout and penetration effects. This study considers both tool runout and penetration effects, using experimental modal analysis, to obtain more accurate predictions. The machining stability in the corner cut, which is a typical transient cut, was assessed from an evaluation of the cutting configurations at the corner.

From the results of tracer test for the existing chlorine contactor in Y water treatment plant, $T_{10}$ and $T_{10}$/T were calculated as 130 min and 0.16, respectively. Therefore it required the modification schemes for improving hydraulic efficiency, surrogated by T10 and $T_{10}$/T, and disinfection performance. In this study, in order to reduce dead zone within contactor, the installation of porous baffles in the near of each corner was suggested and verified using transient CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation technique and tracer tests on dynamic condition. From the results of simulation and tracer tests, it was revealed that porous baffles installed have been effective to reduce dead zone within contactor, and increase plug flow fraction.
This paper presents applications of the objective stress rates to stress update algorithms for transient shell dynamic analysis within the context of explicit time integration. The hypo elasto-plastic materials are assumed in establishing constitutive equations. The derivation of the objective stress rates are investigated by use of the Lie derivative. Comparison results are given between the Kirchhoff and Cauchy stress formulation. The Jacobian determination algorithm proposed in this paper is presented in association with the Belytschko-Lin-Tsay shell theory. Several numerical examples are demonstrated including contact and non-contact examples, by which proposed algorithms are compared with respect to the accuracy and effectiveness.
The pressure transient inside the passenger cabin of high-speed train has been assessed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. The pressure change inside a train have been calculated using first order difference approximation based on a linear equation between the pressure change ratio inside a train and the pressure difference of inside and outside of the train. The numerical results show that the pressure change inside the new Korean high-seed train passing through a tunnel of Seoul-Busan high-speed line at the speed of 330km/h satisfied well the Korean regulation for pressure change inside a passenger cabin if the train is satisfying the train specification for airtightness required by the regulation.

Explicit numerical integration methods for power system transient stability simulation require very small time steps to avoid numerical instability. The EXST1 exciter model is a primary source of fast dynamics in power system transients. In case of the EXST1, the required small integration time step for entire system simulation increases the computational demands in terms of running time and storage. This paper presents a practical exciter model reduction approach which allows the increase of the required step size and thus the method can decrease the computational demands. The fast dynamics in the original EXST1 are eliminated in the reduced exciter model. The use of a larger time step improves the computational efficiency. This paper describes the way to eliminate the fast dynamics from the original exciter model based on linear system theory. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, case studies with the GSO-37 bus system are provided. Comparisons between the original and reduced models are made in simulation accuracy and critical clearing time.
For understanding molecular mechanisms of photochemical reactions, in particular reactions of proteins with biological functions, it is important to elucidate both the initial reactions from the photoexcited states and the series of subsequent chemical reactions, e.g., conformation, intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions), and inter-protein interactions (oligomer formation, dissociation reactions). Although time-resolved detection of such dynamics is essential, these dynamics have been very difficult to track by traditional spectroscopic techniques. Here, relatively new approaches for probing the dynamics of protein photochemical reactions using time-resolved transient grating (TG) are reviewed. By using this method, a variety of spectrally silent dynamics can be detected and such data provide a valuable description about the reaction scheme. Herein, a blue light sensor protein TePixD is the exemplar. The initial photochemistry for TePixD occurs around the chromophore and is detected readily by light absorption, but subsequent reactions are spectrally silent. The TG experiments revealed conformational changes and changes in inter-protein interactions, which are essential for TePixD function. The TG experiments also showed the importance of fluctuations of the intermediates as the driving force of the reaction. This technique is complementary to optical absorption detection methods. The TG signal contains a variety of unique information, which is difficult to obtain by other methods. The advantages and methods for signal analyses are described in detail in this review.
Active Queue Management(AQM) has been widely used for congestion avoidance in Transmission Control Protocol(TCP) networks. Although numerous AQM schemes have been proposed to regulate a queue size close to a reference level, most of them are incapable of adequately adapting to TCP network dynamics due to TCP's non-linearity and time-varying stochastic properties. To alleviate these problems, we introduce an AQM technique based on a dynamic neural network using the Back-Propagation(BP) algorithm. The dynamic neural network is designed to perform as a robust adaptive feedback controller for TCP dynamics after an adequate training period. We evaluate the performances of the proposed neural network AQM approach using simulation experiments. The proposed approach yields superior performance with faster transient time, larger throughput, and higher link utilization compared to two existing schemes: Random Early Detection(RED) and Proportional-Integral(PI)-based AQM. The neural AQM outperformed PI control and RED, especially in transient state and TCP dynamics variation.
