  • In this study, the wind load characteristics for a transmission tower is investigated considering the effect of the transmission lines through stochastic analysis. The assemblage of the transmission line and insulator are modeled as a double pendulum system connected to the SDOF model of the tower It is observed that the background component of the overturing moment induced by the wind response of the transmission line has considerable portion in the total overturning moment. Based on this result, a rotational viscoelastic damper (VED) is proposed for the mitigation of the transmission line reactions, which act as wind load transferred to the tower. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, time history analysis is conducted for different wind velocities and VED damping constants. From the analysis, the proposed VED is proved to be effective for mitigation of the background component rather than the resonance component of the transmission line reaction.

  • Reliability based limit state design method is replacing traditional deterministic designs such as allowable stress design and/or ultimate strength design methods in world trends. European design code(Eurocode) has adopted limit state design, and Korea road bridge design standard has also recently been transferred to limit state design method. In this trend, Korea railroad design standard is also preparing for adopting the same design concept. While safety factors are determined empirically in traditional design, load combinations as well as load factors are determined by solving limit state equations. General partial safety factors are evaluated by using AFORM(Advanced First Order Reliability Method) in the reliability based limit state design method. In this study sensitivity analysis is carried out for a dead load factor and a live load factor. Relative precisions of the dead load and the live load factors are discussed prior to the AFORM analysis. Furthermore the sectional forces of design and the material quantities required by two different design methods are compared for a PSC box girder railway bridge.

  • This paper measures the mechanical response of precast pavement joints under moving axle loads using the finite-element method, and the models were validated with results of field tests. In order to increase the ability to use the non-linear FE analysis for design and assessment of precast pavement subjected to moving axle load, this paper investigated the effects of different load transfer between the slabs using the ABAQUS finite-element package to solve the nonlinear explicit model equations. The assembly of the panels using dowels and groove-tongue keys has been studied to assess the efficiency of keyway joint system. Concrete damage plasticity model was used to calculate the effects of permanent damages related to the failure mechanisms. With aggregate interlock as the only load transferring system, Load transfer efficiency (LTE) is not acceptable when the axle load reaches to slab joints. The Finite-element modelling (FEM) results showed that keyway joints significantly reduced tensile stresses developed at the mid-slab. Increasing the thickness of the tongue the LTE was improved but with increasing the height of the tongue the LTE was decreased. Stresses are transferred to the adjacent slab efficiently when dowels are embedded within the model. When the axle load approaches joints, tensile damage occurs sooner than compressive damage, but the damage rate remains constant, then compressive damage increases significantly and become the major form of distress under the dowels.

  • Embedded piles, which are typically used in Korea, are precast piles inserted into prebored ground with cement paste. Dynamic pile tests tend to underestimate the bearing capacity of embedded piles because of the undeveloped shaft resistance prior to the curing of the cement paste and the insufficient energy transferred after the curing. In this study, a resistance combination method using the base resistance before the cement paste is cured and the shaft resistance after the cement paste is cured is proposed to obtain a combined load-settlement curve from dynamic pile tests. Two pairs of embedded piles with diameters of 600 and 500 mm are installed. Each pair comprises one pile for the dynamic pile test and another pile for the static load test. The shape of the load-settlement curve obtained using the proposed method is similar to that obtained from the static load test. Thus, the resistances evaluated using the proposed method at selected settlements are similar to those obtained from the static load test. This study shows that the resistance combination method may be used effectively in dynamic pile tests to accurately evaluate the bearing capacity of embedded piles.

  • The objective of this research was to study the formation of the thick hardened layer with the addition of metal powder(Cu) and ceramics powders(TiC) on the aluminum 5083 alloys by plasma transferred arc process(PTA process) and to characterize the effect of overlaying conditions on the overlaid layer formation. This was followed by investigating the microstructures of the overlaid layers and mechanical properties such as hardness and wear resistance. The overlaid layer containing copper powder was alloyed and intermetallic compound($CuAl_2$) was formed. The overlaid layers with high melting point TiC powders, however, did not react with base metal. Wear resistance of the alloyed layer was remarkably improved by the formation of $CuAl_2$, precipitate phase, which prevented wear of base aluminum alloys and at higher wear speed, accelerated sliding of the counter part. Wear resistance of the composite layer was also remarkably improved because TiC powder act as a load barring element and Fe debris fragments detached from the counter part act as a solid lubricant on the contact surface.

  • Thermal behavior on the cylinder block of a 4-cylinder, 4-stroke 2.0L SOHC gasoline engine was numerically and experimentally analyzed. The numerical calculation was performed using the finite element method. The cylinder block was modelled as a three dimensional finite element by considering its geometry. The physical domain was devided into hexahedron elements. 16 thermocouples were installed at points of 2mm inside from cylinder wall near top ring of piston in cylinder block, which points have suffered major thermal loads and suggested as proper measurement points for engine design by industrial engineers. Under full load and 9$0^{\circ}C$ coolant temperature condition, temperature behavior of cylinder block according to engine speed were analyzed. The results showed that temperature rose gradually to conform to a function of 2nd~4th order of engine speed at intake side, exhaust and siamese side, respectively. As engine load was changed from 100 to 50% by 25% step, temperature curve also conformed to 2nd~7th order function of engine speed. Temperature differences by load condition were similar among 100, 75% and 50%. Under full load and coolant temperature of 11$0^{\circ}C$, temperature behavior were also analyzed and the result also showed conformance to 2n d~7th order function of engine speed. Temperature curve was transferred in parallel upwards corresponding coolant temperature rise.

  • Integral abutment bridges have many advantages over bridges with expansion joints in terms of economy and maintenance costs. However, in the design of abutments of integral bridges temperature loads play a crucial role. In addition, seismic loads are readily transferred to the substructure and affect the design of these components significantly. Currently, the European and American bridge design codes consider these two load cases separately in their recommended design load combinations. In this paper, the importance and necessity of combining the thermal and seismic loads is investigated for integral bridges. A 2D finite element combined pile-soil-structure interactive model is used in this evaluation. Nonlinear behavior is assumed for near field soil behind the abutments. The soil around the piles is modeled by nonlinear springs based on p-y curves. The uniform temperature changes occurring at the time of some significant earthquakes around the world are gathered and applied simultaneously with the corresponding earthquake time history ground motions. By comparing the results of these analyses to prescribed AASHTO LRFD load combinations it is observed that pile forces and abutment stresses are affected by this new load combination. This effect is more severe for contraction mode which is caused by negative uniform temperature changes.

  • The diagrid structural system is considered to be not only the best structural system for constructing free form structures, but also a very effective system in resisting lateral load. As a newly investigated structural system, its complicated node has not yet been completely investigated and minimal experimentation of manufacturing and constructing the system have been conducted. Therefore, the constructing cost of the diagrid structural system is still comparatively high. In this paper, the cyclic performance of a diagrid node with an H-section brace will be discussed. Design details that consider productivity were proposed and their structural performances were assessed through experimental and analytical investigation.

  • After launching, spacecraft is exposed to extreme environments. So spacecraft should be tested after design/manufacture to verify whether components can be operated functionally. Acceleration transferred from launch vehicle to spacecraft produces quasi-static load, sine vibration and random vibration. Random vibration is also induced by acoustic vibrations transferred by surface of spacecraft. And shock vibration is produced when spacecraft is separated from launch vehicle. To verify operation of spacecraft under these launch environments, separation shock test, sine vibration test, acoustic vibration test and random vibration test should be performed. This paper describes these launch environment test requirements.
