  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics behind a backward facing step located in a vertical channel has been studied. In this study, the numerical prediction has been performed by solving the Navier-Stokes equation and energy equation simultaneously with the SIMPLE algorithm embedied in TEACH code. Local heat flux was measured by using Schlieren Interferometer. The flow visualization was performed using the cylindrical lens and the laser beam that is scattered by the supplied glycerine particles. The velocity and temperature distributions, recirculation region, reattachment length, and local heat flux are obtained under the various parameters to investigate the buoyancy effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics behind the step.

  • The reaction of FeC5H5+ ion with ferrocene molecule is investigated using FT-ICR mass spectrometry. FeC5H5+ ions are generated by dissociative ionization of ferrocenes using an electron beam. The reaction gives rise to the formation of the adduct ion, Fe2(C5H5)3+, in competition with charge transfer reaction leading to the formation of ferrocene molecular ion, Fe(C5H5)2+·. The branching ratio of the adduct ion increases as the internal energy of the reactant ion decreases and correspondingly the branching ratio for the charge transfer reaction product decreases. The observed rate of the addition reaction channel is slower than that of the charge transfer reaction. The observation of the stable adduct ions in the low-pressure ICR cell is attributed to the radiative cooling of the activated ion-molecule complex. The mechanism of the reaction is presented to account for the observed experimental results.

  • This paper investigates structural characteristics of internal vertical diaphragm and its influence on the connection strength between concrete filled tubular(CFT) column and beam. CFT columns are hybrids that combine two materials in one member. They have the benefits of steel for high tensile strength and ductility and of concrete for high compressive strength and stiffness. Analytical method of the flexural strength of vertical diaphragm to account moment transfer between panel zones is presented using yield line theory. Connection design is verified by a set of monotonic tests and numerical analysis with different diaphragm thicknesses. Plastic zones of CFT flange was found and matched closely to FEM results. Both analytical and experimental results showed good agreement that vertical diaphragm effectively alleviates the stress and transfer the force.

  • Ground anchor, commonly referred to as tiebacks or tie-down, is essentially steel elements secured in the ground by cement grout. They are used to provide either lateral or vertical support for various engineered structures, and are effective in all types of soil and rock. However, ground anchor can not be used in soft clay because anchor resistance would not be guaranteed. In this paper, conceptual introduction of the Smart Anchor is presented. The Smart Anchor is a kind of friction type anchor, the load is diffused and applied to the various parts of the distributed bond length, having less impact on the grout strength, and being able to secure necessary anchoring force in relatively soft grounds. This study shows a numerical study of predicting the load transfer of The Smart Anchor in soft clay. A beam-column analysis was performed by a elastic-plastic P-y curves in soft clay.

  • The composite system, which is consisted of the steel girder and reinforced concrete column has some advantages in the structural efficiency and the construction productivity by complementing the shortcomings between the two materials. This research is aimed at the development of the composite beam-column connection system by which the steel beam can be connected to the R/C column with smooth stress transfer. And, to ensure safety of this system, the tests of moment and shear resisting performance have been carried out for actual size specimen. From the test, the connection system has been preyed to take good resistance and stress transfer between steel girder and reinforced concrete column.

  • The aim of this study is to calculate natural frequencies and harmonic responses of cracked frames with general boundary conditions by using transfer matrix method (TMM). The TMM is a straightforward technique to obtain harmonic responses and natural frequencies of frame structures as the method is based on constructing a relationship between state vectors of two ends of structure by a chain multiplication procedure. A single variable shear deformation theory (SVSDT) is applied, as well as, Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (EBT) for comparison purposes. Firstly, free vibration analysis of intact and cracked frames are performed for different crack ratios using TMM. The crack is modelled by means of a linear rotational spring that divides frame members into segments. The results are verified by experimental data and finite element method (FEM) solutions. The harmonic response curves that represent resonant and anti-resonant frequencies directly are plotted for various crack lengths. It is seen that the TMM can be used effectively for harmonic response analysis of cracked frames as well as natural frequencies calculation. The results imply that the SVSDT is an efficient alternative for investigation of cracked frame vibrations especially with thick frame members. Moreover, EBT results can easily be obtained by ignoring shear deformation related terms from governing equation of motion of SVSDT.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effects of voxel size, the oversampling technique, and the direction and area of measurement on modulation transfer function (MTF) values to identify the optimal method of MTF measurement. Materials and Methods: Images of the wire inserts of the SedentexCT IQ phantom were acquired, and MTF values were calculated under different conditions(voxel size of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mm; 5 oversampling techniques; simulated pixel location errors; and different directions and areas of measurement). The differences in the MTF values across various conditions were evaluated. Results: The MTF 10 values showed smaller standard deviations than the MTF 50 values. Stable and accurate MTF values were obtained in the 0.1-mm voxel images. In the 0.3-mm voxel images, oversampling techniques of 11 lines or more did not show significant differences in MTF values depending on the presence of simulated location errors. MTF 10 values showed significant differences according to the direction and area of the measurement. Conclusion: To measure more accurate and stable MTF values, it is better to measure MTF 10 values in small-voxel images. In large-voxel images, the proper oversampling technique is required. MTF values from the radial and tangential directions may be different, and MTF values vary depending on the measured area.

  • In the case of fire, a structure loses its original stiffness due to the temperature rise, and the load bearing capacity decreases. The loss of structural strength increases with increasing fire time of the structure. To prevent the collapse of buildings, it is very important to understand whether or not the members are damaged. On the other hand, there is insufficient data to be a guideline for diagnosing and evaluating the residual strength of the members in Korea. Therefore, this study examined the resistance performance by Finite-Element-Analysis of composite beams, which are composite structures among structural members. Composite beam modeling was carried out based on the model used in the Electrical Penetration Room (EPR) in cooperation with KEPCO. The heat transfer analysis and structural analysis of the critical phase were performed using ANSYS, a finite element analysis program. ANSYS was used to perform heat transfer analysis and structural analysis at the static analysis. To analyze the residual performance, the temperature distribution of the composite beam and the maximum displacement result of the heat-affected structure analysis were derived and the experimental data and the structural analysis result data were compared and analyzed.

  • Simulation on the electron beam welding of Al 2219 alloy was carried out by using commercial FEM code MARC, which encounters moving heat sources. Due to axisymmetry of geometry, a half of the cylinder was simulated. A coupled thermo-mechanical analysis was carried out and subroutine for heat flux was substituted in the program. The material properties such as specific heat, heat transfer coefficient and thermal expansion coefficient were given as a function of temperature and the latent heat associated with a given temperature range is considered. As a result, the proper beam power is 60㎸${\times}$60㎃ and welding speed is 1∼1.5 m/min. The residual stress in the heat-affected zone as well as the fusion zone does not increase. It is necessary to use jigs for preventing distortion of cylinder and improving weld quality.
