Analysis on the cascade high power piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers

  • A new type of cascade sandwiched piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer is presented and studied. The cascade transducer is composed of two traditional longitudinally sandwiched piezoelectric transducers, which are connected together in series mechanically and in parallel electrically. Based on the analytical method, the electromechanical equivalent circuit of the cascade transducer is derived and the resonance/anti-resonance frequency equations are obtained. The impedance characteristics and the vibrational modes of the transducer are analyzed. By means of numerical method, the dependency of the resonance/anti-resonance frequency and the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient on the geometrical dimensions of the cascade transducer are studied and some interesting conclusions are obtained. Two prototypes of the cascade transducers are designed and made; the resonance/anti-resonance frequency is measured. It is shown that the analytical resonance/anti-resonance frequencies are in good agreement with the experimental results. It is expected that this kind of cascade transducer can be used in large power and high intensity ultrasonic applications, such as ultrasonic liquid processing, ultrasonic metal machining and ultrasonic welding and soldering.

과실 비파괴평가용 초음파 변환기 개발 (Development of Ultrasonic Transducer for Nondestructive Evaluation of Whole Fruit)

  • In this study, ultrasonic transducers for non-destructive contact measurement of whole fruits were developed. The design parameters for ultrasonic transducer such as acoustical impedance of fruits, kinds of piezoelectric materials, ultrasonic wave frequency, and transducer diameter were investigated. In order to match the acoustical impedance between piezoelectric material and fruit, various materials were fabricated and evaluated. Also to control the sensitivity and bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer, various backing materials were fabricated and evaluated. Especially, the wear plate of the ultrasonic transducer was designed and fabricated considering the curvature of fruit. The central frequencies of two developed ultrasonic transducers were about 100 kHz and 200 kHz, respectively. With the developed ultrasonic transducers, non-destructive evaluation of the fruit will be possible.

케이블센서를 이용한 2차원 위치측정 시스템 (A Two-Dimensional Position Sensor Using Cable Extension Transducers)

  • Based on the cable-extension transducers, a new technique for two dimensional position measurement is developed in this paper. This new technique includes the use of two such transducers and the planar position is determined through triangulation. This paper also presents uncertainty analysis results for establishing sensor design specifications. An actual prototyped sensor system is built and its accuracy is verified through h\both experiments with coordinate measurement machines and its application to the real-time control of a high load wheeled mobile robot. This new type of position sensor can be easily used in a wide variety of automation applications in industry for two dimensional position measurements with high accuracy over a relatively large range, and it is both cast effective and robust against hostile environments.

  • Optimum directivity synthesis of ultrasonic transducers in linear array is considered. To realize the desired directivity, a robust and efficient method is proposed which is the direct inversion combined with the iterative DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method. A quasi-ideal beam with the beam width and the steering beam angle specified are chosen for the numerical demonstrations. The demonstration is then extended to the case of multi-beams. The proposed combination method shows quick convergence over the single LMS or DFP method at the expense of the system matrix inversion.

  • Electromagnetic - Acoustic Transducers for the inspection of tubes were developed using permanent magnets and induction coils. The propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves in a tude wall was measured by the transducers. The position of a flaw in a tube and the relative size of flaws with different size were measured.

  • The paper deals with a theoretical study on the vibrational characteristics of piezoelectric torsional transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equations of natural vibration in several transducer types. Numerical results have clarified the effect of the piezoelectric phenomenon on the mechanical resonance and the effect of the elastic block of a Langevin-type transducer on the natural frequency.

  • Effects of positions of transducers and of distances between transducers on attenuation properties of active noise control systems is investigated via computer simulations. Computer simulations show that the acoustic monopole and dipole systems for duct noise attenuation are sensitive to variations of the transducer location.

  • In order to apply for pickling line in cold rolling process, a high power magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducer was developed. The transducer is expected to overcome the shortcomings of conventional high power ultrasonic transducers. The transducer consists of Fe-Co-V alloy sheets for the magnetostrictive material, an ultrasonic horn made of Hastelloy to withstand acid solution, and electric driving circuit. In the development, the transducer was designed with the theoretical and numerical methods such as finite element method, and was characterized with experimental water tanks.   • The array equations are commonly used for analysis and conceptual design of active sonar projector arrays. Calculation of the radiation impedance matrix poses a major computational bottleneck for the solution of the array equations, which leads to a dramatic increase in computational load as the number of constituent transducers increases. Here, we propose an iteration-based solution method that does not require the calculation of the radiation impedance matrix, as a computationally efficient alternative to the status quo. The validity of the iteration-based analysis is judged against the full finite-element analysis that includes the entire array as well as the medium. The array equations for the 1/3-sector of a cylindrical array comprised of 48 Tonpilz transducers are augmented by the lumped element models, and are solved iteratively for the acoustic and electro-mechanical characteristics. The iteration-based analysis exhibits rapid convergence and accuracy comparable with the FE analysis. Simulations also reveal that the acoustic coupling between transducers has more pronounced effects on the electro-mechanical characteristics of individual transducers than the acoustic performance of the array.
