This paper presents the characteristics of the radial nitration of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers. The differential equations of piezoelectric radial motion have been derived in terms of the radial displacement and electric potential, which are functions of the radial and axial coordinates. Applying mechanical and electrical boundary conditions has yielded the characteristic equation of radial vibration. Numerical results of the natural frequencies have been compared with the experimental observations reported earlier for the transducers of several sizes, and have shown a good agreement for the fundamental mode. The paper discusses the dependence of the natural frequencies on the radius and thickness of the piezoelectric cylinders and the difference between Piezoelectric and elastic resonances.

In order to reduce the systematic error of a build-up system, we have proposed a new test procedure in which all force transducers in a build-up system are rotated by 90.deg. with a base platen fixed on a force standard machine. The setting positions of force transducers on the output of a build-up system were investigated using an orthogonal array. The effects of the parallelism of a build-up system and of the bending moment sensitivity of a force transducer were considered. The experimental results show that the setting position of the base platen hardly affects the output of the build-up system, but the setting positions of force transducers affects it strongly. It reveals that the new test procedure reduces effectively the systematic error of a build-up system.

In this paper, we designed and fabricated the magnetic bearings and built-in type cylindrical capacitive transducers for improving the vibration characteristics of rotating shaft. The eddy current and magnetic field from the electromagnet of the bearing don't affect the measuring signal of the capacitive type transducers so that it is possible to locate the capacitive sensor plates around the magnetic bearing poles and can improve the spillover problem which is induced by the noncollocation of the sensors and actuators. According to the sensitivity calibration schemes using a X-Y table, the cylindrical capacitive transducers have a good linearities in the .+-.70.mu.m range from the geometric center of the sensor plates. The measured results also show high displacement sensitivities of the sensors. According to the performance test of the magnetic bearing which is controlled by the analog PD controllers, we found that the built-in capacitive transducer system successfully measures the journal displacement in the magnetic field and therefore the magnetic bearing system supports the rotating shaft up to 12,000 rpm.

The ultrasonic guided wave phased array using magnetostrictive patch transducers is proposed. The magnetostrictive transducer has received much attention because it is cost-effective and capable to generate ultrasonic waves with a simple configuration. However, it has not been used for ultrasonic guided wave phased array applications until now. In this paper, we propose a magnetostrictive transducer based phased array system consisting of a multi-channel function generator, power amplifiers and Lamb wave magnetostrictive transducers. To check the performance of the ultrasonic guided wave phased array, several Lamb wave focusing experiments were carried out in an aluminum plate. The results demonstrated the capability of the developed array to focus the Lamb waves at specific target points.
Piezoelectric materials have been widely used in ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT). PZT ceramics can be used to receive and generate surface acoustic waves. It is a common application to attach PZT transducers to the surface of structures for detecting cracks in nondestructive testing. However, not until recently have piezoelectric polymers attracted more and more attention to be the material for interdigitated (IDT) surface and guided-wave transducers. In this paper, an interdigitated gold-on-polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducer for actuating and sensing Lamb waves has been introduced. A specific etching technology is employed for making the surface electrodes into a certain finger pattern, the spacings of which yield different single mode responses of Lamb waves. Experiments have been performed on steel and carbon fiber composite plates. Results from PVDF IDT sensors have been compared with those from PZT transducers for verification.
The main purpose of this research is to utilize simple mathematical models to depict the vibration behavior and the resulted sound field of a piezoelectric disk for ultrasonic transducers. Instead of using 1-D vibration model, coupled effect between the thickness and the radial motions was considered to be close to the real vibration behavior. Moreover, Huygens-Fresnel principle was used in both incident and reflected waves to analyze the sound field under obstacles in finite distance. Results of the tested piezoelectric disk show that, discrepancies between the simulation and experiment are 2.5% for resonant frequency and 12% for resulted sound field. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to reduce the complexity in modeling vibration problems, and increase the reliability on analyzing piezoeletric transducers in the design stage.

In this paper, we propose an effective on-line identification method for rotor resistance, which is useful in making speed control of induction motors without rotational transducers robust with respect to the variation in rotor resistance. Our identification method for rotor resistance is based on the linearly perturbed equations of the closed-loop system for sensorless speed control about th operating point. Our identification method for rotor resistance uses only the information of stator currents and voltages. In can provide fairly good identification accuracy regardless of load conditions. Some experimental results are presented to demonstrate the practical use of our identification method. For our experimental work, we have built a sensorless control system, in which all algorithms are implemented on a DSP. Our experimental results confirm that our on-line identification method allows for high precision speed control of commercially available induction motors without rotational transducers.
A method to determine the equivalent circuits of broadband ultrasound transducers is necessary for designing filters that match the impedances of the transducer and the analysis of the transducer. A method is proposed to determine the equivalent circuits of broadband transducers with 2 resonances in the frequency band of interest. The circuit parameters are estimated by iterative Levy method with the measured electrical conductance data. The method is illustrated by computing the conductance and susceptance of the equivalent circuits of 3 types of broadband transducers. The equivalent circuit of a transducer.

Transducers, which are incorporated in control devices for fixed wing aircraft, land vehicles. and weapon systems were designed and manufactured by use of semiconductor strain gages. These transducers consist of three parts; flange mounts, sensing rods, and semiconductor strain gages. In this investigation, we designed cylindrical sensing rods with high sensitivity and developed installation procedures of semiconductor strain gages. The semiconductor strain gage has hish gage factor such that it can produce high resistance change in spite of low strain, but it is so small and fragile that one should handle carefully and sophisticated installation method is needed for good performances. The prototype transducers are manufactured, and then tested about three important factors: sensitivity, linearity, and hysteresis. We got results or 0.084 V/N sensitivity, 0.2% nonlinearity, and 0.5% hysteresis.

For enhancement of flaw detactability using array transducers, focusing of ultrasonic waves on a target in an inhomogeneous medium or through a complex geometry is important. But focusing can be strongly degraded by geometrical distortion of field radiated by the array transducers or by sound speed fluctuations in the propagating medium. In recent years, the time reversal technique has been proposed. Thus, in this paper, we describe the basic principal of the time reversal technique for focusing. Then, the implementation results of the time reversal technique for ultrasonic inspections using bulk waves and guided waves generated by array transducers are presented.
