  • The objective of this investigation is to develop an efficient method to generate and measure torsional waves in non-ferromagnetic waveguides by using magnetostrictive transducers. In existing methods using a nickel strip that is attached circumferentially to the test specimen, large current input to the magnetostrictive transducer often generates undesired wave modes in addition to the desired torsional wave. However, we propose a new method to generate the torsional waves without being accompanied with other undesirable wane modes regardless of the input current magnitude. The specific transducer configuration is suggested and its performance is also checked through a series of experiments.

  • The capacitive type transducers measure the displacement of rotating shaft using the voltage difference which is formed between the sensor plates and rotor so that the measured signal is not affected by the magnetic field generated by the magnetic bearing. In this paper, the capacitive transducers are embedded inside of the magnetic bearing. In order to verify the support characteristics of the capacitance sensor-magnetic bearing system, we experimented and analyzed the magnetic bearing-rotating shaft system up to 12,000 rpm. The magnetic bearing system proposed in this paper, successfully supports the rotating shaft and we can remain the maximum displacement below $5 \mu m$ at 12,000 rpm.

  • The transmission and reception characteristics of surface acoustic wave devices are analyzed by introducing three different types of transducers. such as single-electrode transducer. double-electrode transducer and triple-electrode transducer. Utilizing an electromagletic field theory technique, the output signal has been derived theoretically. The basic analysis used here can be extended for other configurations. The surface acoustic devices have been shown promising as a means of improving the operation efficiency by modifying the Beometric configuration of transducer strips.

  • The process of localization of cracks and movement of the fracture process zone(FPZ) was studied using the acoustic-emission(AE) techniques. The rate of AE events and sources of AE activity were studied for mortar and rock specimens loaded in uniaxial compression. A series of transducers could be used to detect and AE activity. Based on the time differences between detection of the event at different transducers, source of AE activity could be detected. The rate of AE events increased sharply before peak load. The highest rate occurred just after peak load was attained. The effective crack length estimated from the modified linear-elastic fracture mechanics seemed consistent with the optical and AE measurements.

  • The NDT(nondestructive test) using pulse echo method with piezoelectric transducers and the system for NDT including image processing were studoed. The system consisted of pulse generator and receiver, two step motors for X-Y scanner, PC-Scope for data aquisition and PC-Lab for trigger and motor driving. We tested and estimated at one point under the following conditions : 1) just water, 2) Aluminum without any crack and 3) Aluminum with hole. The estimated NDT result of whole area (point : $35{\times}20$) is compared with real samples.

  • In this paper ZnO Piezoelectric transducers were fabricated as follows, counter electrode (pt 99.9%) was deposited on the sapphire substrates by DC sputter method, and then piezoelectric layer (ZnO 99.999%) was deposited on the counter electrode according to the sputtering parameters, and then top electrode (pt 99.9%) was deposited on the piezoelectric layer by Electron Beam Gun Evaporator. Structural characteristic of deposited ZnO thin film was measured by XRD, SEM. Also, Frequency characteristic of ZnO transducer was analyzed theoretically and practically for input frequencies.

  • The paper deals with the accuracy comparison between two kinds of ultrasonic paths for flow rate measurement. In the Z-path, two transducers are installed on the opposite sides of each other on a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves generated at one transducer propagate to arrive at the other one only by refraction. In the V-path, two transducers are installed on one side of a pipe, and the ultrasonic waves reflected at the inner wall of the pipe are received. Transit times were confirmed to identify the propagation paths by comparing the theoretically calculated results and measured ones. The flow rate measurements with two kinds of ultrasonic paths appeared very similar. It would be possible to select either of the paths by considering the advantages and disadvantages.

  • The paper deals with the energy transmission ratio of the elastic waves obliquely transmitting through a plate and a pipe. The incidence angle corresponding to the maximum transmission was determined theoretically and considered in the design of ultrasonic transducers for flow velocimetry. Experimentally-obtained transmission ratios were compared with and confirmed the theoretically-calculated results.
