  • Dissimilar metal welds in nuclear power plant are known as very susceptible to PWSCC flaws, and periodically inspected by the qualified inspector and qualified procedure during in-service inspection period. According to field survey data, the majority of their DMWs are located on tapered nozzle or adjacent to a tapered component. These types of configurations restrict examination access and also limit examination volume coverage. Additionally, circumferential scan for axially oriented flaw is very difficult to detect located on tapered surface because the transducer can't receive flaw response from reflector for miss-orientation. To overcome this miss-orientation, it is necessary adapt skewed ultrasonic transducer accomodate tapered surface. The skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer designed by modeling and manufactured from the modelling result for axial flaw detection. Experimental results showed that the skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer get higher flaw response than non-skewed refracted longitudinal ultrasonic transducer.

  • In this paper, the resonant characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer with a fixed tail mass has been studied by means of an equivalent circuit approach. An equivalent circuit has been designed to describe the characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer that has an additional resonance because of its fixed tail mass. The transmitting voltage response of the transducer calculated by the designed circuit has been compared with that by the FEA (finite element analysis) to confirm the validity of the circuit. This equivalent circuit approach produces identical results with the FEA, in which the variation of resonant frequencies and TVR has been clearly figured out in relation to the stiffness of the mounting fixture and the mass of the tail mass. The suggested equivalent circuit can be utilized to figure out the characteristics of the Tonpilz transducer more efficiently than FEA that requires much calculation time and revision of the models in accordance with the variation of design variables.

  • In this paper, a linear-array transducer capable of overcoming the faults of a single element and phased array transducers with convex shape for non-destructive ultrasonic testing was designed and fabricated. A 5.5 MHz linear-array transducer was designed using the PiezoCAD program based on the KLM analysis and the PZFlex program based on the FEM analysis. A 2-2 composite structure was employed to achieve broad-band characteristics. A 128 element linear-array transducer was fabricated and its performance was compared with the simulation results. The center frequency of the fabricated transducer was 5.5 MHz and the -6 dB frequency bandwidth was 70 %. Thus, we expect that the designed transducer can provide an effective inner image of the test material during non-destructive ultrasonic testing.

  • A low frequency, high power hydroacoustic transducer with 7 tonpilz piston elements assembled in a circular array suitable for marine application, such as the transmission of underwater information and the development of new fisheries resources in the deep sea zone was designed. A modified Mason's model was applied to monitor and to simulate the transducer behavior at each step during the fabrication. The in air, and in water constructed tonpilz transducer was tested experimentally and numerically by changing the size and the type of the material for head, tail and acoustic window. Also, the developed transducer was excited by pulse signals and the received waveform was analyzed. The resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response(TVR) of a single tonpilz element without housing were observed at 11.33kHz in air and 10.93kHz in air and 10.93 kHz in water, respectively, with the overall electrical-acoustic efficiency of 43.7%. The value of TVR of single tonpilz element with aluminum housing in water was 129.87dB re 1 $\mu$Pa/V at 12.25 kHz with the frequency bandwith of 2.15 kHz and half beam angle of 30.2$^{\circ}$at -3dB.The resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response of the 7 element circular transducer were observed at 11.50 kHz in air and 11.45 kHz in water, respectively. The value of TVR in water 144.84 dB re 1$\mu$Pa/V at 11.5kHz with the frequency bandwith of 4.25 kHz and the half beam angle of $22.3^{\circ} $ at -3dB.Reasonable agreement between the experimental measurements and the theoretical predictions for the directivity patterns, TVRs and the impedance characteristics of the designed transducer was achieved.

  • In this paper, we present design and test results of a Ka-band dual-band ortho-mode transducer (OMT) for use in a feed assembly for the very small aperture terminals (VSATs). The designed ortho-mode transducer have wideband characteristics to separate the signals that have two orthogonal linear polarizations operating at 20GHz of receive frequency band and at 30GHz of transmit frequency band. In addition, in order to reduce the volume of the feed assebly, a Boifot based ortho-mode transducer has been designed with a dual-band. Experimental results for the design verification, the return loss in the receive band and in the transmit band for the horizontal polarization showed over 20dB and 21dB, respectively, and for the vertical polarization showed over 20dB and 24dB, respectively. The port isolation for the horizontal polarization and the vertical polarization showed over 43dB and 52dB, respectively, in the receive band and in the vertical band.

  • In this study, we investigated the design of a wire wedge bonding ultrasonic tool horn using finite element method (FEM) simulations. The proposed method is based on an initial design estimate obtained by FEM analysis. An ultrasonic excitation causes various vibrations of a transducer horn and capillary. A simulated ultrasonic transducer horn and resonator are then built and characterized experimentally using a laser interferometer and electrical impedance analyzer. The vibration characteristics and resonance frequencies close to the exciting frequency are identified using ANSYS. FEM analysis is developed to predict the resonance frequency of the ultrasonic horn and use it in the optimal design of an ultrasonic horn mode shape.

  • The conventional ultrasonic linear motors developed so far utilize a standing wave and are of a pi-type or a hybrid transducer type structure. Traveling wave type bi-direction linear motors have not been developed yet. This paper describes design of a new bi-directional ultrasonic linear motor working by means of a traveling wave. With the finite element method we design and verify validity of the new structure. And we determine its optimal structure size of design variables material and boundary conditions for proper generation of the traveling wave.

  • The active sonar transmission system consists of a transmitter that outputs an electrical signal and an underwater acoustic transducer that converts the amplified electrical signal into an acoustic signal. In general, the transmitter output characteristics are dependent on load impedance, and an underwater acoustic transducer, which is a transmitter load, has a characteristic that the electrical impedance varies largely according to frequency when driven. In such a variable impedance condition, the output of the active sonar transmission system may become unstable. Hence, this paper proposes a design and control technique of a sonar transmitter for transmitting a stable transmission signal even under variable impedance conditions of an underwater acoustic transducer in an active sonar transmission system. The electrical impedance characteristics of the underwater acoustic transducer are experimentally analyzed, and the sonar transmitter is composed of a single-phase full-bridge inverter, an LC filter, and a matching circuit. In this paper, the design and output control method of the sonar transmitter is proposed to protect the transmitter and transducer. It can secure stable output voltage characteristics even if it transmits the Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signal. The validity is verified through the simulation and the experiment.

  • We have studied to obtain the SAW filter for the passband was formed on the Langasite substrate and was evaporated by Aluminum-Copper alloy and then we performed computer-simulated by simulator. We can fabricate that the block weighted type IDT as an input transducer of the filter and the withdrawal weighted type IDT as an output transducer of the filter from the results of our computer-simulation. Also, we have performed to obtain the properly design conditions about phase shift of the SAW filter for WCDMA. We have employed that the number of pairs of the input and output IDT are 50 pairs and the thickness and the width of reflector are 5000$\AA$ and 3.6$mu$m, respectively. Frequency response of the fabricated SAW filter has the property that the center frequency is about 190MHz and bandwidth at the 3dB is probably 8.2MHz. And we could obtain that return loss is less then 16dB, ripple characteristics is probably 4dB and triple transit echo is less then 18dB after when we have matched impedance.

  • Typically, photoacoustic images are obtained in water or gelatin because the impedance of these mediums is similar to that of the human body. However, these acoustic mediums can have an additional mass effect that changes the resonance frequency of the transducer. The acoustic radiation impedance in air is negligible because it is very small compared to that of the transducer. However, the high acoustic impedance of mediums such as the human body and water is quite large compared to that of air, making it difficult to ignore. Specifically, in a case where the equivalent mass is very small, such as with a micro-machined ultrasound transducer, the additional mass effects of the acoustic medium should be considered for an accurate resonance frequency design. In this study, a piezoelectric micro-machined ultrasonic transducer (pMUT) was designed to have a resonance frequency of 10 MHz in the acoustic medium of water, which has similar impedance as the human body. At that time, the resonance frequency of the pMUT in air was calculated at 15.2 MHz. When measuring the center displacement of the manufactured pMUT using a laser vibrometer, the resonance frequencies were measured as 14.3-15.1 MHz, which is consistent with the finite element method (FEM) simulation results. Finally, photoacoustic images of human hair samples were successfully obtained using the fabricated pMUT.
