Two Beginning Teachers' Epistemic Discursive Moves and Goals in Small Groups in Mathematics Instruction

  • Students' participation in epistemic practices, which are related to knowledge construction on the part of students, is becoming a crucial part of learning (Goizueta, 2019). Research on epistemic practices in science education draws attention to teachers' support of students to engage in epistemic practices in mathematics instruction. The research highlights a need for incorporating epistemic goals, along with conceptual and social goals, into instruction to promote students' epistemic practices. In this paper, I investigate how teachers interact with students to integrate epistemic goals. I examined 24 interaction excerpts that I identified from six interview transcripts of two beginning teachers' mathematics instruction. Each excerpt was related to the teachers' talk about their specific interaction(s) in a small group. I explored how each teacher's discursive moves and goals were conceptual, social, and epistemic-related as they intervened in small groups. I found that both teachers used conceptual, social, and epistemic discursive move but their discursive moves were related only to social and social goals. This paper suggests supporting teachers to develop epistemic goals in mathematics instruction, particularly in relation to small groups.

First-time fathers' experiences during their transition to parenthood: A study of Korean fathers

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore first-time fathers' experiences during their transition to parenthood in South Korea. Methods: Data were collected from September 2019 to February 2020 through in-depth interviews that were conducted individually with 12 participants. First-time fathers with children under 2 months of age were recruited. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results: Four theme clusters were identified: Preparing to become a father, challenges of becoming a father, motivation to foster familial bonds, and acknowledgement of fatherhood. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Korean first-time fathers prepared to practice parenthood through prenatal education, taegyo, and feeling bonds with their new baby. They recognized their identity as fathers and experienced self-growth. These results would be beneficial for health professionals in developing perinatal care programs, and the results provide basic data for studies on fathers and families during the transition to parenthood.

  • Long-non coding RNAs (LncRNAs) constitute a wide and extremely diverse family of RNA transcripts that are greater than 200 base pairs in length and are not translated into proteins. X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) was the first long non-coding RNA to be discovered, back in 1991. Its function in X-chromosome inactivation has been extensively studied for three decades, though other functional roles of XIST that involve a variety of fascinating mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Here, we review the emerging oncogenic role of XIST in various human cancers.

The life experience of parents with amblyopic children (소아 약시 어머니의 삶의 체험에 대한 현상학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of parents with amblyopic children. The data were collected from August 2018 to May 2019. This study involved semi-structured in-depth individual interviews and was analyzed in terms of Giorgi's phenomenological methodology. The participants of this study were 7 mothers with amblyopic children. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed. Four themes-clusters were identified: passing without realizing the clues of action, experiencing emotional distress, enduring the long and tough process of treatment, and making every effort to escape from amblyopia. The findings from this study provide a deep understanding of mothers'experiences of caring for amblyopic children. Based on the findings, health care providers need educational programs that include a step-by-step eye health program. In addition, compliance needs to be improved.

  • Macrophages activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are known to induce several proinflammatory proteins including COX-2. iNOS and TNF which produce chemical mediators involved in inflammatory response. Sophoricoside and its analogs (genistin, genistein and orobol) from Sophora japonica (Leguminosae) showed differential inhibitory effects on COX-1 and 2 activities. Sophoricoside and genistin shwoed IC50 values of 4 uM and 6 uM on COX-2 activity and of 1,497 uM and 135 uM on COX-1 activity, respectively. Genistein and orobol showed IC50 values of 3 uM on COX-2 activity and of 28 uM and 18 uM on COX-1 activity. respectively. Therefore. the legume isoflavonoids to be selective COX-2 inhibitors. However. sophoricoside and its analogs did not show inhibitory effects of COX-2, iNos and TNF transcripts. which were identified by the RT-PCR.

Dimensionality Reduction of RNA-Seq Data

  • RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) is a technology that facilitates transcriptome analysis using next-generation sequencing (NSG) tools. Information on the quantity and sequences of RNA is vital to relate our genomes to functional protein expression. RNA-Seq data are characterized as being high-dimensional in that the number of variables (i.e., transcripts) far exceeds the number of observations (e.g., experiments). Given the wide range of dimensionality reduction techniques, it is not clear which is best for RNA-Seq data analysis. In this paper, we study the effect of three dimensionality reduction techniques to improve the classification of the RNA-Seq dataset. In particular, we use PCA, SVD, and SOM to obtain a reduced feature space. We built nine classification models for a cancer dataset and compared their performance. Our experimental results indicate that better classification performance is obtained with PCA and SOM. Overall, the combinations PCA+KNN, SOM+RF, and SOM+KNN produce preferred results.

Examining How Teacher Identities Explain Their Interactions with Students in Small Groups

  • Examining ways to interact with students in small groups is an important topic for researchers to understand. Existing studies pertaining to the topic have not shed light on knowing why teachers interact with students in small groups the way they do. Given that teacher identity shapes teaching practices, this study explores how teacher identity shapes teachers' interaction with students in small groups. Working with two beginning teachers, I conducted four interviews to collect the data related to reasons behind their interactions with students in small groups in the interview. I analyzed the interview transcripts using a thematic analysis. I found that one teacher's teacher identity was related to her personal experiences as a child and a learner and another teacher's teacher identity was related to her view of teachers' roles as a teacher. I provide discussion and implications of this study.

Involvement of RNA2 for systemic infection of Cucumber mosaic virus isolated from lily on zucchini squash

  • A lily strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (LK-CMV) was not able to systemically infect zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo), while Fny strain of CMV (Fny-CMV) caused systemic mosaic and stunting symptom at 4 days post-inoculation on the same host species. The pathogenicity of LK-CMV in zucchini squash was investigated by reassortments of genomic RNAs of LK-CMV and Fny-CMV for infection, as well as by pseudorecombinants generated from biologically active transcripts of CDNA clones of LK-CMV and Fny-CMV, respectively. The assessments of pathogenicity for LK-CMV indicated that RNA2 of LK-CMV was responsible for systemic infection in zucchini squash. In the protoplast of zucchini squash, the RNA accumulations of all constructed pseudorecombinants were indistinguishable and LK-CMV replication was slightly lower than that of Fny-CMV, suggesting that the inability of LK-CMV to infect squash plants was responsible for the poor efficiency of virus movement, rather than the reduction of replication function.

Applying Machine Learning approaches to predict High-school Student Assessment scores based on high school transcript records

  • A common approach to the problem of predicting student test scores is based on the student's previous educational history. In this study, high school transcripts of about two thousand candidates, who took the High-school Student Assessment (HSA) were collected. The data were estimated through building a regression model - Random Forest and optimizing the model's parameters based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) to predict the HSA scores. The RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) measure of the predictive models was used to evaluate the model's performance.

The experiences of patients with tinnitus: a qualitative study (이명 환자의 증상 경험 연구)

  • Purpose: Tinnitus, which is often described as the conscious awareness of a sound without an external auditory stimulus, is one of the most common symptoms in the general population. This study aimed to explore the experiences of individuals living with tinnitus. Methods: In this qualitative exploratory study, data were collected from November 2017 to January 2018 through in-depth individual interviews with 11 tinnitus patients. Verbatim transcripts and field notes were analyzed using content analysis. Results: The extracted content was classified into three core categories of tinnitus experiences: "suffering from constant sound," "being imprisoned surrounded by persistent noise," and "efforts to overcome." Conclusion: This study shows that tinnitus had a severe negative impact on patients' lives. The finding will help healthcare providers understand their patients more deeply.
