The speed of vehicles has remained a significant factor that influences the severity of accidents and traffic accident rate in many parts of the world including South Korea. This behavior where drivers drive at speeds which exceed a posted safe threshold is known as 'speeding'. Over the past twenty years, the Korean National Police Agency (NPA) has become aware of an increased frequency of drivers who are speeding. Therefore, fixed-type ASE systems [1] have been installed on hazardous road sections of many highways. These system monitor vehicle speeds using a camera. However, the use of ASE systems has changed the behavior of the drivers. Specifically, drivers reduce speed or avoid the route where the cameras are mounted. It is not practical to install cameras at every possible location. Therefore, it is challenging to thoroughly explore the location where speeding occurs. In view of these problems, the author of this paper designed and implemented a prototype visualization system in which point and color are used to show vehicle location and associated over-speed information. All of this information was used to create a comprehensive visualization application to show information about vehicle driving. In this paper, we present an approach detecting vehicles moving at speeds which exceed a threshold and visualizing the points those violations occur on a map. This was done using vehicle trajectory data collected in Daegu city. We propose steps for exploring the data collected from those sensors. The resulting mapping has two layers. The first layer contains the dynamic vehicle trajectory data. The second underlying layer contains the static road networks. This allows comparing the speed of vehicles on roads with the known maximum safe speed of those roads, and presents the results with a visualization tool. We also compared data about people who drive over threshold safe speeds on each road on days and weekends based on vehicle trajectories. Finally, our study suggests improved times and locations where law enforcement should use monitoring with speed cameras, and where they should be stricter with traffic law enforcement. We learned that people will drive over the speed limit at midnight more than 1.9 times as often when compared with rush hour traffic at 8 o'clock in the morning, and 4.5 times as often when compared with traffic at 7 o'clock in the evening. Our study can benefit the government by helping them select better locations for installation of speed cameras. This would ultimately reduce police labor in traffic speed enforcement, and also has the potential to improve traffic safety in Daegu city.

Electric vehicles and robots are real-time distributed control systems composed of multiple drive subsystems using micro controller units. Each control subsystem should be modular, compact, power saving, interoperable and fault tolerable in order to be incorporated into the networked real-time distributed control system. Under the networked real-time distributed control the synchronization problem can be occurred to the position and orientation tracking control due to the load variance, mismatch and time delay between the multiple drive subsystems. This paper suggests two types of position synchronization control of the single link manipulators. One of them is composed of cross controller, Kalman filter and disturbance observer, and the other uses the generation of target trajectories to minimize the gradient vector of the scalar function which is composed of the sum of square errors between the reference input vector and the output vectors. The availability of the proposed control schemes is shown through the control experiments.

Special railway vehicles for track maintenance are equipped with a tamping device that adjusts various track trajectories to reduce the vibration of rolling stock and improve ride quality during trains passing over a track. The development of a simulator that can confirm the error of the actual tamping work is important for reducing human error in the linearization of the track misalignment. In this study, to improve the reality and training effect of conventional 2D simulator, 3D simulator modeling was implemented for tamping work of special railway vehicles in virtual space. The problem of buffering during high screen quality of tamping work was solved using the Unwrap UVW mapping technique of a low polygon extracted from high quality polygon modeling. The human error in the training of the tamping work was detected by the principle of circle and square collision when the tamping tyne and the sleeper collided. In addition, vibration of the driving chair was generated at the same time as the collision, and the number of the sleeper strikes is displayed on the simulator exercise screen. Owing to the scattering of railway ballast protruding from the sleepers, which had a serious effect on the safety of the vehicle, the gravel bouncing effect of the tamping unit was applied.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to develop a methodology to estimate the minimum required separation distance (MRSD) between a vehicle and a bicycle when overtaking. METHODS : Three steps have been conducted to develop a methodology to estimate MSRD. First, a literature review has been conducted on the measurement of MSRD, and how it may be applied in Korea. Second, two assumptions have been made to develop a methodology to estimate the MSRD. The first assumption is that the maximum separation distance between a vehicle and a bicycle can be observed when they are at the same location longitudinally. In addition, it is assumed that the separation distance is invalid when the contra-flow exists. Finally, three cameras were installed at a height of 10 m to record the vehicle-bicycle interaction. Moreover, the vehicle trajectories as well as the separation distance were coded and analyzed. Through the hypothesis test and the interval estimation, the sample mean was tested and the confidence interval was estimated. RESULTS : 141 records of separation distance data were collected, and the hypothesis test demonstrated that the MSRD in Korea is significantly higher than other countries. In addition, the confidence interval of the population mean of MSRD is from 1.51 m to 1.65 m with 95% level of confidence. CONCLUSIONS : It is expected that the proposed methodology to estimate MSRD would be beneficial in studying road safety of vehicles and bicycles. Also, the proposed MSRD is expected to be designated in the act of road and transportation.

In this paper the Gamma guidance law, which was used for IUS (Inertial Upper Stage), is applied for solid-motor guidance of a upper stage of a satellite launch vehicle. The RCS (Reaction Control System), which activates after burnout of the upper stage, is employed for the convergence of the guidance algorithm and compensation of velocity errors induced by the solid motor. The algorithm is also simplified by replacing the time-consuming numerical integration process to predict final vehicle states with Keplerian trajectories. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by conducting 3-DOF computer simulations for off-nominal flight conditions. The numerical results show that Gamma guidance can reduce the orbit injection accuracy in comparison with that obtained by applying open-loop commands.
Interest in freeway truck traffic has increased largely due to greater safety concerns regarding truck-related crashes. The negative interactions between slow-moving trucks and other vehicles are a primary cause of hazardous conditions, which lead to crashes with larger speed variations. To improve operational efficiency and safety, providing a climbing lane that separates slow-moving trucks from higher performance vehicles is frequently considered when upgrading geometrics. This study developed an operations strategy for freeway climbing lanes based on traffic conditions in real time. To consider traffic safety when designing a dynamic strategy to determine whether a climbing lane is closed or open, various factors, including the level of service (LOS) and the percentage of trucks, are investigated through microscopic simulations. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to simulate freeway traffic streams and collect vehicle-maneuvering data. Additionally, an external application program interface, VISSIM's COM-interface, was used to implement the proposed climbing lane operations strategies. Surrogate safety measures (SSM), including the frequency of rear-end conflicts and, were used to quantitatively evaluate the traffic safety using an analysis of individual vehicle trajectories obtained from VISSIM simulations with various operations scenarios. It is expected that the proposed algorithm can be the backbone for operating the climbing lane in real time for safer traffic management.

With the recent advancement of 4th Industrial Revolution technology, transportation systems are generating large amounts of mobility data related to the individual movement trajectories of vehicles and people. There are many constraints on utilizing mobility data containing personal information. Thus, in South Korea, the processing and generation of pseudonymized information and the analysis and utilization of this information have been managed in a dual manner by applying separate agencies and technologies through the revision of the Data 3 Act and the enactment of the Data Basic Act. However, this dual approach fails to securely support the entire data lifecycle and suffers from inefficiencies in terms of processing time and cost. Therefore, to compensate for the problems of the existing Expert Data Combination System and Data Safety Zone, this study proposes an Integrated Data Safety Zone Framework that integrates and unifies the process of generating, processing, analyzing, and utilizing mobility data. The integrated process for data processing was redesigned, and common requirements and core technologies were derived. The result is an architecture for a next-generation Integrated Data Safety Zone system that can manage and utilize the entire life cycle of mobility data at one stop.

HPAI(Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) is a contagious animal disease that spreads rapidly by diffusion after the first occurrence. The disease has brought tremendous social costs and economic losses. KAHIS (Korea Animal Health Information System) is the integrated system for supporting the task of preventing epidemics. They provide decision-support information, recording vehicle visiting times and facility location, etc., which is possible by enforcing registration of all livestock related facilities and vehicles. KAHIS has accumulated spatial and temporal information that enables effective tracing of potential disease trajectories and diffusion through vehicle movements. The contact network is created utilizing spatial and temporal information in KAHIS to inform facility connection via vehicle visitation. Based on the contact network, it is possible to infer spatial and temporal mechanism of disease spread and diffusion. The study objective is to empirically demonstrate how to utilize primary spatial and temporal information in KAHIS in the form of the contact network. Based on the contact network, facilities with the possibility of infection can be pinpointed within the potential spatial and temporal extent where the disease has spread and diffused. This aids the decision-making process in the task of preventing epidemics. By interpreting our demonstration results, policy implications were presented. Finally, some suggestions were made to comprehensively utilize the contact network to draw enhanced decision-support information.

This study analyzes the effect of the changes in traffic environments such as transportation speeds on the time-distance accessibility for the public transportation passengers. To do this, we use passenger transaction databases of the Seoul metropolitan public transportation system: one week for each of the three years (2011, 2013, and 2015). These big data contain the information about time and space on the traffic trajectories of every passenger. In this study, the time-distances of links between subway stations and bus stops of the public transportation system at each time are calculated based on the actual travel time extracted from the traffic-card transaction database. The changes in the time-distance accessibility of the integrated transportation network from the experimental results can be summarized in two aspects. First, the accessibility tends to decline as the year goes by. This is because the transportation network becomes more complicated and then the average moving speed of the vehicles is lowered. Second, the accessibility tends to increase on the weekend in the analysis of accessibility changes by day. This tendency is because the bus speeds on bus routes on the weekend are faster than other days. In order to analyze the accessibility changes, we illustrate graphs of the vehicle speeds and the numbers of passengers by year and day.
Automobile shredder residue (ASR) is the final waste produced when end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are shredded. ASR can be separated using mineral-processing operations such as comminution, air classification, magnetic separation, and/or electrostatic separation. In this work, trajectory analyses of conductors (copper) and non-conductors (glass) in the ASR have been carried out using induction electrostatic separator for predicting or improving the ASR-separation efficiency. From results of trajectory analysis for conductors, the trajectories of copper wire by observation versus simulation for coarse particles of 0.5 and 0.25 mm showed consistent congruity. The observed 0.06 mm fine-particles trajectory was deflected toward the (-) attractive electrode owing to the charge-density effects due to the particle characteristics and relative humidity. In the case of non-conductors, the actual trajectory of dielectric glass deflected toward the (-) electrode, showing characteristics similar to those of conductive particles. The analyses of stereoscopic microscope and SEM & EDS found heterologous materials (fine ferrous particles and conductive organics) on the glass surface. This demonstrates the glass decreasing separation efficiency for non-ferrous metals during electrostatic separation for the recycling of ASR. Future work will require a pretreatment process for eliminating impurities from the glass and advanced trajectory-simulation processes.
