A Variable Demand Traffic Assignment Model Based on Stable Dynamics (안정동력학에 의한 가변수요 통행배정모형)

  • This study developed a variable demand traffic assignment model by stable dynamics. Stable dynamics, suggested by Nesterov and do Palma[19], is a new model which describes and provides a stable state of congestion in urban transportation networks. In comparison with the user equilibrium model, which is based on the arc travel time function in analyzing transportation networks, stable dynamics requires few parameters and is coincident with intuitions and observations on congestion. It is therefore expected to be a useful analysis tool for transportation planners. In this study, we generalize the stable dynamics into the model with variable demands. We suggest a three stage optimization model. In the first stage, we introduce critical travel times and dummy links and determine variable demands and link flows by applying an optimization problem to an extended network with the dummy links. Then we determine link travel times and path flows in the following stages. We present a numerical example of the application of the model to a given network.

  • A new dynamic channel assignment (DCA) algorithm with rearrangement for cellular mobile communication systems is suggested. Our DCA algorithm is both traffic and interference adaptive, which is based on the mathematical formulation of the maximum packing under a realistic propagation model. In developing the algorithm, we adopt the Lagrangean relaxation technique that has been successfully used in the area of mathematical programming. Computational experiments of the algorithm reveal quite encouraging results. Although our algorithm primarily focuses on microcellular systems, it can be effectively applied to conventional cellular systems under highly nonuniform traffic distributions and interference conditions.

Asymptotic cell loss decreasing rate in an ATM multiplexer loaded with heterogeneous on-off sources

  • Recently, some research has been done to analyze the asymptotic behavior of queue length distribution in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) multiplexer. In this paper, we relate this asymptotic behavior with the asymptotic behavior of decreasing cell loss probability when the buffer capacity is increased. We find with reasonable assumptions that the asymptotic rate of queue length distribution is the same as that of decreasing cell loss probability. Even under different priority control schemes and traffic classes, we find that this asymptotic rate of the individual cell loss probability of each traffic class does not change. As a consequence, we propose the upper bound of cell loss probability of each traffic class when a priority control scheme is employed. This bound is computationally feasible in a real-time. The numerical examples will be provided to validate this finding.

  • A network model and a Genetic Algorithm(GA) is proposed to solve the simultaneous estimation of the trip distribution and traffic assignment from traffic counts in the congested networks in a logit-based Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE). The model is formulated as a problem of minimizing the non-linear objective functions with the linear constraints. In the model, the flow-conservation constraints of the network are utilized to restrict the solution space and to force the link flows meet the traffic counts. The objective of the model is to minimize the discrepancies between the link flows satisfying the constraints of flow-conservation, trip production from origin, trip attraction to destination and traffic counts at observed links and the link flows estimated through the traffic assignment using the path flow estimator in the legit-based SUE. In the proposed GA, a chromosome is defined as a vector representing a set of Origin-Destination Matrix (ODM), link flows and travel-cost coefficient. Each chromosome is evaluated from the corresponding discrepancy, and the population of the chromosome is evolved by the concurrent simplex crossover and random mutation. To maintain the feasibility of solutions, a bounded vector shipment is applied during the crossover and mutation.

  • Work zone traffic control is of keen interest because both traffic operations and safety performances are directly affected by traffic management methods. In particular, work zone traffic on two-lane roads needs to be managed in more efficient and safer manners due to its unique characteristics of alternative right-of-way assignment. This study developed a dynamic control algorithm that can be used for real-time operations of two-lane work zone traffic. The performance of the developed algorithm was evaluated by VISSIM microscopic traffic simulator. An applied programming interface (API) based program was developed to plug-in the control algorithm onto the simulator. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed control algorithm for two-lane work zone.

Classification of Traffic Classes for Application Services in Military Communication Networks (군 통신망 응용서비스를 위한 트래픽 클래스 분류 방법)

  • Traffic classification for application services in military communication networks is one of the core requirements to provide efficient resource management for NCW operations. Though several standards and organizations provided their own traffic classification methods, the methods have been mainly focused on commercial services, but not reflected military specifics. In addition, though various military application services have been emerged, some of those services have been classified into different traffic classes due to implicit criteria for the classification among organizations. In this paper, we propose a methodology to classify traffic classes and to determine delivery requirements for military application services based on various standards by DoD as well as several commercial standards based on Y.1541. The validation of the proposed methodology was carried out by comparing the results by proposed one with the traffic classification suggestions by existing commercial standards, DoD and FCS. We expect that the proposed methodology can contribute to achieve efficient operations of limited military network resources, since the proposed method can provide systematic and consistent way to assign traffic classes for new and existing military applications services.

  • This research explores the question how interactions between customer and firm affect firm growth. To test suggested hypotheses, this study collects data on social commerce industry in Korea during the period from the beginning of social commerce industry in Korea, May 2010, to March 2012, and investigates the effect of social media on the growth of social commerce firms. We suggest two hypotheses in this study. First, as web traffic inflow through social media into a focal social commerce increases, the growth rate of the focal social commerce increases. Second, the more diverse social media channel through which web traffic inflows into a focal social commerce, the weaker the positive effect of web traffic inflow on the growth rate of the focal social commerce. Analysis of data shows that inflow through social media is positively related to the growth of social commerce. In addition, our analysis shows that inflow channel diversity weakens the positive relationship between web traffic inflow through social media and growth rate of social commerce firms. These results suggest that firms need to concentrate on few social media in order to attract customers. The study contributes to understanding how interaction between firms and customers influences the growth of the firm.
