  • Understanding various casual factors affecting the occurrence of freeway traffic crash is a backbone of deriving effective countermeasures. The first step toward understanding such factors is to identify crash risks on freeways. Unlike existing studies, this study focused on the unsafe vehicle maneuvering that can be detected by in-vehicle sensors. The recent advancement of sensor technologies allows us to gather and analyze detailed microscopic events leading to crash occurrence such as the abrupt change in acceleration. This study used an accelerometer to capture the unsafe events. A set of candidate variables representing unsafe events were derived from analyzing acceleration data obtained by the accelerometer. Then, the crash risk was modeled by the binary logistic regression technique. The probabilistic outcome of crash risk can be provided by the proposed model. An application of the methodology assessing crash risk was presented, and further research items for the successful field implementation were also discussed.

Metropolitan areas to target type classification in the highway along the highway adjacent to the intersection at Main Line Blocking optimum operating point analysis and an analysis of countermeasures in case of disaster, the lower the road entering the highway depending on the type of operating at the intersection were different. Depending on the results of analysis, while each point of a disaster, according to the characteristics of geometric conditions, traffic conditions, identify and determine the operating room and the adjacent intersection of media, and building systems to promote the driver if the quick initial response from the impending disaster situations and the safety of drivers can be considered secure.

  • Provision of advanced warning information is one of the useful countermeasures to prevent traffic accidents. Analysis of user's preference for any information contents would be a backbone in designing more effective warning information systems. This study aimed at deriving more comprehensive and valuable warning information that leads to user's safer driving by conducting a questionnaire survey. In total, 258 people including various age groups and driving experiences participated in the survey. Preferable warning information contents were identified by this study. It is expected that the results would be useful data for providing warning information to drivers.

  • A two-lane highway has a high rate of head-on collisions, sideswipe collisions, crashes with an fixed object. This study was to analyze the weakness of a cross section and a horizontal curve in a two-lane highway and find countermeasures to improve the traffic operations and safety. This study evaluated the effectiveness of widening, curve flattening and superelevation, verified it with a case study and assessed the economical efficiency. This study selected the difference between tangent section operating speeds and curve section operating speeds as an evaluation index of horizontal curve section in a two-lane highway. The results indicated that curve flattening is the best way to improve the traffic safety in a two-lane highway. This study has implication that it provides the quantitative effects of curve flattening. Also directions for future study were discussed.

  • The exponential increase of malicious and criminal activities in cyber space is posing serious threat which could destabilize the foundation of modern information society. In particular, unexpected network paralysis or break-down created by the spread of malicious traffic could cause confusion and disorder in a nationwide scale, and unless effective countermeasures against such unexpected attacks are formulated in time, this could develop into a catastrophic condition. In order to solve a same problem, this paper researched early detection techniques for only early warning of cyber threats with separate way the detection due to and existing security equipment from the large network. It researched the cyber example alert system which applies the module of based honeynet from the actual large network and this technique against the malignant traffic how many probably it will be able to dispose effectively from large network.

The Effects of Pavement Markings on High-risk Drivers' Speeds (사고위험성이 높은 운전자에 대한 노면표시 효과 연구)

  • PURPOSES: Speeding is often the primary contributor to fatal crashes. Surprisingly, driving behaviors are indirectly affected by personal factors such as law-abidance, risk sensitivity, and situational adaptability. This research aims to verify the effectiveness of pavement markings at reducing the speeds of high-risk drivers. The purpose of this study is to establish how drivers (including law-abiding or law-breaking, high-risk or low-risk) react to different pavement markings in a driving simulator. METHODS: The five different pavement markings were selected from markings used in other nations. The forty-two drivers were then surveyed, via questionnaires, and placed into the corresponding groups. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted to determine the extent of speed reduction for each pavement marking. RESULTS: Higher speeds were linked to the high-risk drivers. Furthermore, after analysis of the mean difference of average speeds by pavement marking, it was determined that Dragon's Teeth had the greatest speed reducing effect on these drivers. CONCLUSIONS: Perceptual countermeasures are unlikely to strongly affect high-risk drivers' perception of speed on the curves. This statistically demonstrates that Dragon's Teeth have a subtle effect on reducing speeds in the driving simulator. This study's significance lies in the improved understanding of high-risk drivers in terms of road facilities. It approaches the effects of various patterns of pavement markings for high-risk drivers.

Determination of Deceleration Lane Length in Interchange with Shock-Wave Theory (충격파를 고려한 입체교차로의 감속차로 길이 산정방안)

  • Current highway design standards is based on the safety under the free flow condition. The length of deceleration lane is also determined in terms of the deceleration distance which is necessary for the driers to adjust the vehicle speed from the speed limit on the main road to that on the exit ramp of the interchange. However, the queues are frequently developed on the deceleration, and the following vehicles to exit must decelerate on the main road. It may cause delay on the main road and traffic accidents. This study is to suggest a methodology to minimize such problems with the shock-wave theory. The queue length of exiting vehicles can be estimated by the design speeds, traffic volumes of main road and the exiting ramp, and the countermeasures to the operational problems. According to the results, the queue length can be shortened to 80% by upgrading the design speed of exit ramp as the amount of 10km/h. Fifty percent of queue length can be shortened by adding an additional lane on the ramp to two lanes.

Classifying Severity of Senior Driver Accidents In Capital Regions Based on Machine Learning Algorithms (머신러닝 기반의 수도권 지역 고령운전자 차대사람 사고심각도 분류 연구)

  • Moving toward an aged society, traffic accidents involving elderly drivers have also attracted broader public attention. A rapid increase of senior involvement in crashes calls for developing appropriate crash-severity prediction models specific to senior drivers. In that regard, this study leverages machine learning (ML) algorithms so as to predict the severity of vehicle-pedestrian collisions induced by elderly drivers. Specifically, four ML algorithms (i.e., Logistic model, K-nearest Neighbor (KNN), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) have been developed and compared. Our results show that Logistic model and SVM have outperformed their rivals in terms of the overall prediction accuracy, while precision measure exhibits in favor of RF. We also clarify that driver education and technology development would be effective countermeasures against severity risks of senior driver-induced collisions. These allow us to support informed decision making for policymakers to enhance public safety.

  • According to a characteristic analysis of traffic accidents of industrial vehicles (RTSA 2007), the occurrence rate and lethality per 10,000 vehicles is 6.7 times higher and 5.3 times higher than that of non-industrial vehicles respectively. For the recent 10 years, in contrast to the 1.5% decrease of the annual rate of entire traffic accidents, the accident rate of industrial vehicles have been increasing 2.0% on the annual average. For the recent 10 years, the accidents of a freight truck and bus have been steadily falling off. But, in the case of a taxi, it has constantly been rising 5.6%. In these situations, the countermeasures to decrease the accident rate are suggested by grasping the inclination of taxi drivers through Q analysis which is character and psychology analysis method.

Comparative Study on the Estimation Methods of Traffic Crashes: Empirical Bayes Estimate vs. Observed Crash (교통사고 추정방법 비교 연구: 경험적 베이즈 추정치 vs. 관측교통사고건수)

  • In the study of traffic safety, it is utmost important to obtain more reliable estimates of the expected crashes for a site (or a segment). The observed crashes have been mainly used as the estimate of the expected crashes in Korea, while the empirical Bayes (EB) estimates based on the Poisson-gamma mixture model have been used in the USA and several European countries. Although numerous studies have used the EB method for estimating the expected crashes and/or the effectiveness of the safety countermeasures, no past studies examine the difference in the estimation errors between the two estimates. Thus, this study compares the estimation errors of the two estimates using a Monte Carlo simulation study. By analyzing the crash dataset at 3,000,000 simulated sites, this study reveals that the estimation errors of the EB estimates are always less than those of the observed crashes. Hence, it is imperative to incorporate the EB method into the traffic safety research guideline in Korea. However, the results show that the differences in the estimation errors between the two estimates decrease as the uncertainty of the prior distribution increases. Consequently, it is recommended that the EB method be used with reliable hyper-parameter estimates after conducting a comprehensive examination on the estimated negative binomial model.
