기상청 기후예측시스템(GloSea6-GC3.2)의 열대저기압 계절 예측 특성 (The Seasonal Forecast Characteristics of Tropical Cyclones from the KMA's Global Seasonal Forecasting System (GloSea6-GC3.2))

  • The seasonal forecast skill of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the Northern Hemisphere from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 6 (GloSea6) hindcast has been verified for the period 1993 to 2016. The operational climate prediction system at KMA was upgraded from GloSea5 to GloSea6 in 2022, therefore further validation was warranted for the seasonal predictability and variability of this new system for TC forecasts. In this study, we examine the frequency, track density, duration, and strength of TCs in the North Indian Ocean, the western North Pacific, the eastern North Pacific, and the North Atlantic against the best track data. This methodology follows a previous study covering the period 1996 to 2009 published in 2020. GloSea6 indicates a higher frequency of TC generation compared to observations in the western North Pacific and the eastern North Pacific, suggesting the possibility of more TC generation than GloSea5. Additionally, GloSea6 exhibits better interannual variability of TC frequency, which shows relatively good correlation with observations in the North Atlantic and the western North Pacific. Regarding TC intensity, GloSea6 still underestimates the minimum surface pressures and maximum wind speeds from TCs, as is common among most climate models due to lower horizontal resolutions. However, GloSea6 is likely capable of simulating slightly stronger TCs than GloSea5, partly attributed to more frequent 6-hourly outputs compared to the previous daily outputs.

예측 모델 및 파라미터 모델을 이용한 파랑 및 폭풍해일 예측 개선방안 연구: 태풍 차바 사례 (A Study on the Improvement of Wave and Storm Surge Predictions Using a Forecasting Model and Parametric Model: a Case Study on Typhoon Chaba)

  • 열대성 저기압으로 인한 높은 파도와 폭풍해일은 해안지역에 큰 피해를 준다. 따라서 태풍이 내습하기 전에 정확하게 예측해야 하는데, 기상 강제력은 예측에 중요한 요소이다. 본 연구는 정확한 폭풍해일 및 파랑예측에 요구되는 기상 강제력을 위한 개선방안을 제시한다. 2016년 남해안을 강타한 태풍 차바를 사례연구로 하여, 기상예측모델(MPAS)로 태풍 트랙 및 기상 강제력, 즉, 기상장을 예측했다. 예측된 MPAS 태풍 트랙 정보를 기반으로 한 태풍의 대칭형 및 비대칭형 파라미터 와류 모델을 이용하여 기상 강제력을 생성하는 한편, 베스트 트랙 기반 동일 한 파라미터 모델을 이용하여 기상 강제력을 생성하여, 둘을 비교했다. 또한, MPAS 예측 태풍 트랙 정보 기반 대칭형/비대칭형 와류 파라미터 모델에서 생성된 기상장은 MPAS에서 예측한 기상장과 블렌딩하여 예측기상장을 만들었다. 이렇게 제작된 MPAS 기반 forecast 기상장 4종 및 베스트 트랙 기반 hindcast 기상장 2종을 ADCIRC+SWAN ADCIRC+SWAN에 입력하여 남해안의 파랑 및 폭풍해일을 예측/재현하고 관측치와 비교·검증했다. MPAS 기반 forecast 기상장을 이용하여 예측된 폭풍해일과 파랑은 관측치와 거의 일치했으며, 베스트 트랙을 사용하여 재현한 결과와도 견줄 만했다. 유의파고는, 6종의 기상장을 이용한 실험에서 MPAS 예측 태풍 트랙 기반 대칭형 와류 파라미터 모델로 생성된 기상장과 MPAS 예측 기상장을 블렌딩한 실험이 예측 정확도가 높았으나, 비대칭형 와류 파라미터 모델과 블렌딩을 사용한 경우보다 약간 높은 정도였다. 폭풍해일은, MPAS 예측 태풍 트랙을 이용한 비대칭형 와류 파라미터 모델에서 생성된 기상장을 이용한 실험이 예측 정확도가 높았다. 폭풍해일과 파랑을 정확하게 예측하기 위해서는, 정확한 태풍 트랙 정보와 이 정보가 반영된 비대칭형 와류가 고려된 기상장, 이 태풍 트랙을 생산한 기상장이 필요한 것을 볼 수 있다.

  • 현재 국내에서 EM-120에 의해 검측된 틀림 데이터는 매우 불규칙적인 형태를 나타내며 데이터 분석 시 다양한 문제점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 궤도의 효율적인 유지관리를 위해 검측된 틀림데이터의 특징과 문제점을 분석하고, 이를 보완할 수 있는 효율적인 처리 기법을 개발하였으며, 정제된 데이터의 ARIMA 분석을 통해 검측데이터와 계절 변화의 상관관계 분석을 수행하였다. 또한 회귀모형, 지수평활법, ARIMA 모형 등 다양한 예측 모델의 적용을 통해 검측 데이터의 시계열 분석을 수행하고, 궤도 틀림 데이터의 예측 모델에 적합한 최적 모델 선정과 관련한 연구를 수행하였다.

  • Based upon the previous experiences and typical oases of typhoon evasion fur ships as well as tile achievement in scientific research in this detrain, we developed the Intelligent Typhoon Evasion System for Ships. It consists of five subsystems, including electronic charts, ship movement management, typhoon information query and automatic plotting, real-time calculation of ship-typhoon situation, intelligent typhoon evasion decision making. With the synthetical application of analogy theory, synoptic chart, satellite cloud picture analysis, typhoon digital forecast and other relevant technologies, we leave established the typhoon evasion data bases. model bases and knowledge bases, which make it possible to automatically track the ships and typhoon paths. The system can realize ship-typhoon situation analysis, risk levee assessment, typhoon paths correction and course synoptic forecast, and intelligent typhoon evasion decision making.

2010년 태풍 특징 (Characteristics of Tropical Cyclones in 2010)

  • In 2010, only 14 tropical cyclones (TCs) were generated over the western North Pacific (WNP), which was the smallest since 1951. This study summarizes characteristics of TCs generated in 2010 over the WNP and investigates the causes of the record-breaking TC genesis. A long-term variation of TC activity in the WNP and verification of official track forecast in 2010 are also examined. Monthly tropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly data reveal that El Ni$\tilde{n}$o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event in 2010 was shifted from El Ni$\tilde{n}$o to La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in June and the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event was strong and continued to the end of the year. We found that these tropical environments leaded to unfavorable conditions for TC formation at main TC development area prior to May and at tropics east of $140^{\circ}E$ during summer mostly due to low SST, weak convection, and strong vertical wind shear in those areas. The similar ENSO event (in shifting time and La Ni$\tilde{n}$a intensity) also occurred in 1998, which was the second smallest TC genesis year (16 TCs) since 1951. The common point of the two years suggests that the ENSO episode shifting from El Ni$\tilde{n}$o to strong La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in summer leads to extremely low TC genesis during La Ni$\tilde{n}$a although more samples are needed for confidence. In 2010, three TCs, DIANMU (1004), KOMPASU (1007) and MALOU (1009), influenced the Korean Peninsula (KP) in spite of low total TC genesis. These TCs were all generated at high latitude above $20^{\circ}N$ and arrived over the KP in short time. Among them, KOMPASU (1007) brought the most serious damage to the KP due to strong wind. For 14 TCs in 2010, mean official track forecast error of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for 48 hours was 215 km, which was the highest among other foreign agencies although the errors are generally decreasing for last 10 years, suggesting that more efforts are needed to improve the forecast skill.

The Effects of Typhoon Initialization and Dropwindsonde Data Assimilation on Direct and Indirect Heavy Rainfall Simulation in WRF model

  • A number of heavy rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula are indirectly influenced by tropical cyclones (TCs) when they are located in southeastern China. In this study, a heavy rainfall case in the middle Korean region is selected to examine the influence of typhoon simulation performance on predictability of remote rainfall over Korea as well as direct rainfall over Taiwan. Four different numerical experiments are conducted using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, toggling on and off two different improvements on typhoon in the model initial condition (IC), which are TC bogussing initialization and dropwindsonde observation data assimilation (DA). The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory TC initialization algorithm is implemented to generate the bogused vortex instead of the initial typhoon, while the airborne observation obtained from dropwindsonde is applied by WRF Three-dimensional variational data assimilation. Results show that use of both TC initialization and DA improves predictability of TC track as well as rainfall over Korea and Taiwan. Without any of IC improvement usage, the intensity of TC is underestimated during the simulation. Using TC initialization alone improves simulation of direct rainfall but not of indirect rainfall, while using DA alone has a negative impact on the TC track forecast. This study confirms that the well-suited TC simulation over southeastern China improves remote rainfall predictability over Korea as well as TC direct rainfall over Taiwan.

태풍 기상장의 신뢰도 분석: 태풍 산바(1216) (Analysis of Reliability of Weather Fields for Typhoon Sanba (1216))

  • 2012년 남해안에 내습한 태풍 산바에 의해 발생한 폭풍해일과 파랑을 JMA-MSM 예보기상자료, NCEP-CFSR 재분석 기상자료, ECMWF-ERA5 재분석 기상자료, JTWC의 최적경로를 이용한 기상자료를 이용하여 수치모의하고, 계산된 해일고를 전국 해안의 항만에서 관측된 폭풍해일 시계열 자료와 비교하였으며, 파랑에 대해서는 계산된 유의파고를 해상 부이 및 수압식 파고 관측 자료와 비교하였다. 이 비교를 통해 태풍 산바에 대한 각종 기상장의 신뢰도를 평가하였다. 그 결과 JMA-MSM 기상자료와 NCEP-CFSR 기상자료가 가장 신뢰도가 높았고, ECMWF-ERA5 기상자료는 전반적으로 해일고나 파고의 크기가 작게 나타났으나, 태풍 전면부의 수렴대는 가장 잘 재현하는 것으로 나타났다. JTWC의 최적경로를 이용한 기상자료는 신뢰도가 가장 낮게 나타났다.

  • The important factor to evaluate the running safety of a railway vehicle would be the interaction force between wheel and rail(derailment coefficient), for which is one of important factors to check the running safety of a railway vehicle that may cause a tragic accident. Especially, a newly developed vehicle that first runs commercially requires necessarily the measurement and evaluation of derailment coefficient for securing the safety of a vehicle while measuring the derailment coefficient in view of securing running safety could be the more important factor than any other factors. In this paper, examined possibility that can forecast derailment possibility to behavior of only vibration and displacement by measuring vibration acceleration and displacement in vehicles that travel actuality rail track, and compares with data of wheel load/lateral force result.

광역철도건설 우선순위에 관한 연구 - 수도권전철을 중심으로 - (A STUDY OF DETERMINATION PRIORITY ORDER FOR BUILDING RAILROADS IN METROPOLITAN AREA)

  • For the construction of railroads in Metropolytan area based upon the outcome of the future demand forecast, a total of 21 lines including electrified double track segment of Ui-Jung-Bu↔Dong-Du-Chun(18.9km) in Kyung-Won Line is expected. Considering the financial difficulties and investment effect of the lines, this in the sequel brings about an important matter of deforming priority Investment plan to build electrified lines among the candidates. In the case of Japan, Tokyo metropolytan area covered In total by 2,070.1km of various lines, i.e., subway lines(241km), private lines(952.7km), JR lines(876.4km), provides convenient means of transportation for the coummuters and makes a contribution to the development of its neighboring areas and to the expansion of settlement areas. Comparing the total length per 1,000$\textrm{km}^2$, Tokyo(105), Paris(117), and London(115) are at least 6 times as large as ours(15). The purpose of this study is two fold provide a basic scheme for building railroads in metropolytan area and determine priority order in accordance with some evaluation criteria.

전구 모델의 물리과정에 따른 태풍 모의 민감도 (Sensitivity of Typhoon Simulation to Physics Parameterizations in the Global Model)

  • The sensitivity of the typhoon track and intensity simulation to physics schemes of the global model are examined for the typhoon Bolaven and Tembin cases by using the Global/Regional Integrated Model System-Global Model Program (GRIMs-GMP) with the physics package version 2.0 of the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems. Microphysics, Cloudiness, and Planetary boundary Layer (PBL) parameterizations are changed and the impact of each scheme change to typhoon simulation is compared with the control simulation and observation. It is found that change of microphysics scheme from WRF Single-Moment 5-class (WSM5) to 1-class (WSM1) affects to the typhoon simulation significantly, showing the intensified typhoon activity and increased precipitation amount, while the effect of the prognostic cloudiness and PBL enhanced mixing scheme is not noticeable. It appears that WSM1 simulates relatively unstable and drier atmospheric structure than WSM5, which is induced by the latent heat change and the associated radiative effect due to not considering ice cloud. And WSM1 results the enhanced typhoon intensity and heavy rainfall simulation. It suggests that the microphysics is important to improve the capability for typhoon simulation of a global model and to increase the predictability of medium range forecast.
