Dynamic Task Scheduling Via Policy Iteration Scheduling Approach for Cloud Computing

  • Dynamic task scheduling is one of the most popular research topics in the cloud computing field. The cloud scheduler dynamically provides VM resources to variable cloud tasks with different scheduling strategies in cloud computing. In this study, we utilized a valid model to describe the dynamic changes of both computing facilities (such as hardware updating) and request task queuing. We built a novel approach called Policy Iteration Scheduling (PIS) to globally optimize the independent task scheduling scheme and minimize the total execution time of priority tasks. We performed experiments with randomly generated cloud task sets and varied the performance of VM resources using Poisson distributions. The results show that PIS outperforms other popular schedulers in a typical cloud computing environment.

천문대 극미광영상장비의 성능 시험 (PERFORMANCE TEST OF THE KAO CCD IMAGING SYSTEM)

  • Korea Astronomy Observatory (KAO) recently developed a new model of CCD imaging system for astronomical purpose. This paper presents system structure and electrical circuit descriptions with the performance of the CCD imaging system. The developed system can handle astronomical image acquisition with additional functions of on-chip binning, sub-image acquisition using a SITe $1024\times1024$ CCD chip. Particularly the controller design of the system allows us great flexibility and versatility with the software system control and it is possible to cope with any format CCDs by any manufactures, in principle. The system performances are derived by mean variance test in our laboratory, which shows that the total system noise 10.5e-(R.M.S), Gain 1.9e-/ ADD, non-linearity $0.37\%$

  • As Korean engineering contribution to ALMA enhancement, development of focal plane arrays(FPAs) for the total power array in ALMA compact array has been projected mainly to increase mapping speed in interferometric multi-pointing observation(mosaicking). To tackle engineering issues expected in order to be compatible with the existing ALMA receivers, we plan to develop a prototype 300-500 GHz heterodyne FPA system including a software spectrometer using GPU clusters for ASTE(Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment) telescope by 2017.

The Empirical Study on the Success Factors of IT Adoption in Korea Service Industry

  • This study is to present effective ways of IT adoption as a new growth engine for vitalizing service industry. The paper identifies key success factors of IT adoption and analyzes empirically its' impact on user satisfaction. Additional analysis of control effect by company sizes is conducted. For data sampling, among 1590 companies in IT systems, equipment, and software, 1570 companies participated and total 2,000 questionnaires were collected. In order to analyze main effect analysis and control effect, Structural Equation Modeling method was applied. The result show that there are significant effect between key success factors and user satisfaction. Based on the result, the paper suggests effective way of IT adoption according to company sizes.

  • Visual effects are important cues for providing occupant s with virtual reality in a vehicle simulator which imitates real driving. The viewpoint of an occupant is sensitively dependent upon the occupant´s posture, therefore, the total body motion must be considered in a graphic simulator. A real time simulation is required for the dynamic analysis of complex human body motion. This study attempts to apply a neural network to the motion analysis in various driving situations. A full car of medium-sized vehicles was selected and modeled, and then analyzed using ADAMS in such driving conditions as bump-pass and acceleration. A multibody system analysis software, MADYMO, was used in the motion analysis of an adult male dummy in the seated position.   • Using back electro-motive force(EMF) signals of a brushless DC motor, the sensorless micro-processor controlled drive system was developed. In this new commutation method, the manual pulses are used for relatively short accelerating phase and then the exact commutational positions are detected based upon the back emf signals. The hardware and software implementations with the experiment to compare the performance of the developed system with the, conventional system using hall effect sensors are included. By reducing the number of the required sensors in the artificial heart control system, the total reliability will be incresed.

DSL: Dynamic and Self-Learning Schedule Method of Multiple Controllers in SDN

  • For the reliability of controllers in a software defined network (SDN), a dynamic and self-learning schedule method (DSL) is proposed. This method is original and easy to deploy, and optimizes the combination of multiple controllers. First, we summarize multiple controllers' combinations and schedule problems in an SDN and analyze its reliability. Then, we introduce the architecture of the schedule method and evaluate multi-controller reliability, the DSL method, and its optimized solution. By continually and statistically learning the information about controller reliability, this method treats it as a metric to schedule controllers. Finally, we compare and test the method using a given testing scenario based on an SDN network simulator. The experiment results show that the DSL method can significantly improve the total reliability of an SDN compared with a random schedule, and the proposed optimization algorithm has higher efficiency than an exhaustive search.

  • In order to solve the optimization problem of designing the trajectory of three-dimensional horizontal well, we establish a multi-phase, nonlinear, stochastic dynamic system of the trajectory of horizontal well. We take the precision of hitting target and the total length of the trajectory as the performance index. By the integration of the state equation, this model can be transformed into a nonlinear stochastic programming. We discuss here the necessary conditions under which a local solution exists and depends in a continuous way on the parameter (perturbation). According to the properties we propose a revised Hooke-Jeeves algorithm and work out corresponding software to calculate the local solution of the nonlinear stochastic programming and the expectancy of the performance index. The numerical results illustrate the validity of the proposed model and algorithm.

  • Three-dimensional blood flow in the sac of the KTAH(Korean total artificial heart) is simulated using fluid-structure interaction model. The aim of this study is to delineate the three-dimensional unsteady-blood flow in the sac of KTAH. Incompressible viscous flow is assumed for blood using the assumption of Newtonian fluid. The numerical method employed in this study is the finite element software called ADINA. Fluid-structure interaction model between blood and sac is utilized to represent the deformation of the sac by the rigid moving actuator. Three-dimensional geometry of cactus type KTAH is chosen for numerical model with prescribed pressure boundary condition on the sac surface. Blood flow is generated by the motion of moving actuator and strongly interacts with the solid material surrounding blood. High shear stress is observed mainly near the inlet and outlet of the sac.

Development of PC-based Radiation Therapy Planning System

  • The main principle of radiation therapy is to deliver optimum dose to tumor to increase tumor cure probability while minimizing dose to critical normal structure to reduce complications. RTP system is required for proper dose plan in radiation therapy treatment. The main goal of this research is to develop dose model for photon, electron, and brachytherapy, and to display dose distribution on patient images with optimum process. The main items developed in this research includes: (l) user requirements and quality control; analysis of user requirement in RTP, networking between RTP and relevant equipment, quality control using phantom for clinical application (2) dose model in RTP; photon, electron, brachytherapy, modifying dose model (3) image processing and 3D visualization; 2D image processing, auto contouring, image reconstruction, 3D visualization (4) object modeling and graphic user interface; development of total software structure, step-by-step planning procedure, window design and user-interface. Our final product show strong capability for routine and advance RTP planning.
