  • Echo cancellation is required for a dual-duplex high speed communication such as digital subscriber line(DSL), in order to allow each individual loop to operate in a full duplex fashion. Echo cancellation was one of the most difficult aspects of DSL design, requiring high linearity and total echo return loss in excess of 70 dB. For a long and rapidly changing echo response, if the echo is cancelled by an adaptive echo canceller, the echo canceller needs more taps and its performance is decreased. But if the response is divided into several responses, which response is estimated by a adaptive digital filter and combined, the computation complexities are decreased and the performance is increased. Therefore, the adaptive multi-stage echo canceller is proposed to decrease the computation complexity and increase the performance of echo return loss, in which the echo canceller is composed of several stage echo canceller estimating each divided echo response. Through computer simulations, this multi-stage echo canceller is verified to have merits for high speed communications such as DSL application.

  • This study was investigated the chemical composition from Syneilesis palmata essential oil and the tendency of variation of the sesquiterpene compounds according to the harvesting time. The essential oils obtained by hydro distillation from the aerial parts of Syneilesis palmata were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Ninety-eight compounds consisting of 9 aliphatic hydrocarbons, 17 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, 11 aliphatic aldehydes, 1 terpene aldehyde, 8 aliphatic alcohols, 4 monoterpene alcohols, 16 sesquiterpene alcohols, 3 diterpene alcohols, 6 ketones, 11 esters, 8 oxides and epoxides, 3 acids and 1 miscellaneous one were identified from the oil. Spathulenol (22.33%) was the most abundant compound, followed by ${\beta}$- caryophyllene (6.23%), germacrene D (5.57%), longipinane (4.10%), and epiglobulol (3.65%). The volatile composition of Syneilesis palmata was characterized by higher contents of sesquiterpene compounds, especially sesquiterpene alcohols. The total content of 13 sesquiterpene compounds was decreased significantly from 2010 to 2012. ${\alpha}$-Caryophyllene, ${\beta}$-bisabolene, elemol, germacrene D, ${\beta}$-zingiberene, longipinane, and ${\beta}$-caryophyllene alcohol contents decreased, while ${\beta}$-bisabolol content increased during 3 years. The ecological responses to recent climate change may be influenced in the chemical components of natural plant terpenoids.

  • In this paper dynamic modeling parameters were estimated using a frequency domain estimation method. A systematic flight test method was employed using preprogrammed multistep excitation of the swashplate control input. In addition when one axis is excited, the autopilot is engaged in the other axis, thereby obtaining high-quality flight data. A dynamic model was derived for a small scale unmanned helicopter (CNUHELI-020, developed by Chungnam National University) equipped with a Bell-Hiller stabilizer bar. Six degree of freedom equations of motion were derived using the total forces and moments acting on the small scale helicopter. The dynamics of the main rotor is simplified by the first order tip-path plane, and the aerodynamic effects of fuselage, tail rotor, engine, and horizontal/vertical stabilizer were considered. Trim analysis and linearized model were used as a basic model for the parameter estimation. Doublet and multistep inputs are used to excite dynamic motions of the helicopter. The system and input matrices were estimated in the frequency domain using the equation error method in order to match the data of flight test with those of the dynamic modeling. The dynamic modeling and the flight test show similar time responses, which validates the consequence of analytic modeling and the procedures of parameter estimation.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore changes in symptom distress and functional status in gynecologic cancer patients during the entire treatment cycles of chemotherapy. Methods: A prospective and longitudinal study with repeated measures was designed. Symptom Distress Scale and Karnofsky Performance Status Index were included in a daily log developed for self-administration. A total of 39 patients with a mean age of 48.4 years participated. Results: The levels of symptom distress and functional status changed significantly over the six cycles. Symptom distress kept increasing until its peak at the fourth cycle, while the functional status scored lowest at the first cycle, then it improved as the cycle repeated. In each cycle, symptom distress was marked higher during the first 6 days accompanying poor functional status. However, both changes did not recover completely until the end of each cycle. Conclusion: Nursing assessment and intervention need to be provided based on these changing patterns to help cancer patients cope and adjust successfully during the long treatment period. Further studies are needed to examine the impact of the major symptoms on psychological responses, quality of life, and outcomes of the cancer treatments.

  • Genetic parameters were estimated for birth weight and weaning weight from three year (1991-1993) data totalling 1100 records of 25 rams to 205 ewes of Indigenous Sabi flock maintained at Grasslands Research Station in Zimbabwe. AIREML procedures were used fitting an Animal Model. The statistical model included the fixed effects of year of lambing, sex of lamb, birth type and the random effect of ewe. Weight of ewe when first joined with ram was included as a covariate. Direct heritability estimates of 0.27 and 0.38, and maternal heritability estimates of 0.24 and 0.09, were obtained for birth weight and weaning weight, respectively. The total heritability estimates were 0.69 and 0.77 for birth weight and weaning weight, respectively. Direct-aternal genetic correlations were high and positive. The corresponding genetic covariance estimates between direct and maternal effects were positive and low, 0.25 and 0.18 for birth weight and weaning weight, respectively. Responses to selection were 0.8 kg and 0.14 kg for birth weight and weaning weight, respectively. The estimated expected correlated response to selection for birth weight by directly selecting for weaning weight was 0.26. Direct heritabilities were moderate; as a result selection for any of these traits should be successful. Maternal heritabilities were low for weaning weight and should have less effect on selection response. Indirect selection can give lower response than direct selection.
