  • This study was conducted to investigate the chlorophyll contents, photosynthetic characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence of Cirsium setidens and Pleurospermum camtschaticum by shading treatment. Two species were grown under non-treated (full sunlight) and three different shading condition (88~93%, 65~75% and 45%~55% of full sunlight) for the experiment. Total chlorophyll content, photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), specific leaf area (SLA), and net apparent quantum yield were increased with elevating shading level but decreased dark respiration under the low light intensity. Therefore, light absorption and light utilization efficiency were improved under the low light intensity. 45~55% of full sunlight in C. setidens and 65~75% of full sunlight in P. camtschaticum showed best maximum photosynthetic rate, net apparent quantum yield and photochemical efficiency. On the other hand, non-treated showed lower maximum photosynthetic rate, photochemical efficiency, and chlorophyll content than treated ones. These results suggest that growth of P. camtschaticum adapted to 65~75% of full sunlight and C. setidens adapted to 45~55% of full sunlight.

  • Government support for entrepreneurship has been very useful for many young people who start new ventures to chase their dreams. However, it has constantly been abused by unscrupulous people who intend to take advantage of monetary support. Why do some exploit it, while others make good use of it? It is important to examine the immoral personality traits in potential entrepreneurs, because entrepreneurship affects not only individuals, but also the entire society and country. This study investigates the relationship between negative personality traits and nascent entrepreneurship. Specifically, it examines the effects of the dark triad of personality - narcissism, Machiavellianism, and subclinical psychopathy - on entrepreneurial intention, self-efficacy, and productive and unproductive entrepreneurial motives. We conducted a questionnaire-based survey on university students who intend to start new ventures in the future, while pursuing entrepreneurship education. We analyzed a total of 265 responses. We found that narcissism is the only factor that has a positive influence on entrepreneurial intention. Narcissism has a positive effect on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, while psychopathy has a negative effect. We also found that narcissism has a positive influence on productive entrepreneurial motives, while Machiavellianism has a significant negative influence. Finally, we found that Machiavellianism and psychopathy have a positive impact on unproductive entrepreneurial motives.

  • Older adults in the hospice care experience difficulties in expressing their emotional and psychological issues, which has detrimental effect in their well-being. The purpose of this study is to examine how music can be used to facilitate self-expression both verbally and nonverbally in order to decrease negative influences of self-concealment. Four cases were referred from hospice personnel at the hospital, and received music therapy sessions for four month. The total number of session varied from 9 to 11 depending on the conditions of each case. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from pre and post test of Self-Concealment Scale and Personal Descriptive Essays. The results indicated that the use of music, especially programed songs were effective in evoking emotional responses with various life-related issues and themes. The posttest indicated that the level of self-concealment has decreased, and also the Personal Descriptive Essays involved increased statements of emotional content after music therapy implementation. The study indicates that music can be used as an significant communicative and expressive medium when working with older adults in the hospice or palliative care, since they experience many difficulties to be engaged in the active expression. Music provide both passive and active experience through listening and participating, and programed music therapy intervention will increase the quality of life through expressive music activities.

  • Purpose - Due to the recent slowdown of growth in global luxury brands, which have been an engine of our domestic fashion market growth, there is an increasing need to develop a global market for domestic high-priced fashion brands. In spite of the large scale of trade between Korea and China with respect to fashion products, current trade concentrates on middle- and low-priced products rather than high-priced products. Diversification of the trade between Korea and China in terms of the price levels of trade products is needed. An understanding of Chinese consumption values and purchase intentions for luxury fashion brands will be very helpful for the establishment of strategies with the aim of increasing the level of trade with regard to high-priced fashion products. Therefore, the study aimed to identify the differences in the clothing consumption values of South Korean and Chinese women in their 20s, especially with reference to how those values affect their preference and purchase intention for luxury fashion brands. Research design, data, methodology - The study was implemented through a descriptive survey method using a self-administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 283 Korean and 306 Chinese women in their 20s, residing in Seoul, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. Data were collected from March 3 to 15, 2014. A total of 589 completed responses were analyzed. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, and multiple regression analysis. Results - Fivefactors for clothing consumption values were formulated: conspicuous/social value, fashionability value, personality expression value, hedonic value, and practical value. There were significant differences between Korean and Chinese consumers in clothing consumption values (except social value), preference, and purchase intention for luxury fashion brands. With regard to clothing consumption values, Chinese women attached more importance to fashionability value, personality expression value, hedonic value, and practical value than South Korean women. In addition, Chinese women's preference and purchase intention for luxury fashion brands were higher than South Korean women's. Second, in the case of South Korean women, social value, practical value, and fashionability value had positive effects on preferences for luxury fashion brands, while attractive/personality expression value and hedonic value had no influence. In contrast, in the case of Chinese women, social value and fashionability value had positive effects on preference for the luxury fashion brands. Third, in the case of South Korean women, social value and practical value had positive effects on purchase intentions for luxury fashion brands. In contrast, in the case of Chinese women, social value, personality expression value, and fashionability value had positive effects on purchase intention for luxury fashion brands. Conclusions - Considering the findings of the study, it is clear that differentiated marketing strategies are needed for luxury fashion brand markets in Korea and China. The results of the study could provide useful information that will help increase the effectiveness of luxury fashion brand marketing strategies in Korea and China.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the correlation between belief in hand hygiene, activities and related hand hygiene performance rates among dental staff. Methods: This study was based on the evaluation of 329 dental practitioners, including dental hygienists who work at dental clinics, dental hospitals, general and university dental hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do Province, and Incheon. The questionnaire consisted of a total of 46 questions, including 7 questions on general characteristics, and 25 questions on hand hygiene beliefs, and 5 questions on hand hygiene activities, and 9 questions on hand hygiene practices. This study used 291 subjects for the final analysis, excluding subjects who had provided incomplete or inappropriate responses to the questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, ANOVA, $x^2$ test, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, where p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Longer clinical career was associated with a significant increase in behavior and norm beliefs, but no sequential difference in control beliefs. The hand hygiene performance was higher in staff at larger hospitals after contact with pollutants and contaminated environments. Higher age was associated with a significant increase in hand hygiene performance rates, but profession was not statistically significant in the performance rate of hand hygiene. The hand hygiene performance rate was ranked higher among those with average work hours per week of greater than 8 hours followed by those who worked fewer than 8 hours. Fewer work hours per week, a stronger belief in hand hygiene, less frequent exposure to contaminated environments, and a greater number of hand hygiene performance had a positive effect on higher hand hygiene performance rates. Conclusions: In order to increase the hand hygiene performance rate of dental practitioners, it is considered that required time for hand washing should be ensured sufficiently. Proper usage of hand sanitizers should also be promoted efficiently.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Childhood obesity has increased in recent decades in Korea. This study was designed to examine differences in the eating habits, physical activity (PA), nutrition knowledge, and self-efficacy of children by obesity status. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were 5th-grade children from 70 elementary schools in 17 cities nationwide. Two-stage stratified cluster sampling was employed. Survey questionnaire included items related to general characteristics, eating habits, PA, nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy. Excluding incomplete responses, 3,531 data were analyzed using SPSS. Subjects were categorized into overweight obesity (OW) and normal weight (NW) groups based on body mass index percentiles for age by sex. RESULTS: A total of 21.5% of subjects was overweight or obese. There were significant differences in gender, perceived stress, perception of body shape, body satisfaction, and interest in weight control between the OW and NW groups (P < 0.001). With respect to eating habits, the OW group ate breakfast (P < 0.05) and snacks (P < 0.01) less frequently, ate bigger meals (P < 0.001), and demonstrated less desirable behaviors during meals (P < 0.05 in boys) compared to the NW group. The OW group participated in less PA than the NW group, especially boys. OW boys spent less time walking during weekdays (P < 0.05) or the weekend (P < 0.001), spent more time being sedentary during weekdays or the weekend (P < 0.001), and exercised a fewer number of days (P < 0.01). For girls, the OW group spent more time being sedentary during the weekend (P < 0.01) and exercised a fewer number of days by walking or bicycle riding (P < 0.05) than the NW group. Nutrition knowledge was not significantly different between the OW and NW groups. Self-efficacy (P < 0.01 in boys), especially PA self-efficacy (P < 0.01), was significantly lower in the OW than NW group. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed differences in eating habits, PA, and self-efficacy between OW and NW children. Obesity management programs for children need to focus on increasing self-efficacy, modifying eating habits, and increasing PA.

  • This study was undertaken to provide the appropriate vaccination protocol of canine parvovirus (CPV) vaccine for the companion dogs in Korea. A total of 120 healthy pups (20 pups per group) at 6 weeks of age were randomly assigned to one of four commercially available vaccines [C, G, K, and V groups] and one of vaccination schedules [V2 and V4 groups]. The serological responses to the CPV component of the vaccines were determined by measuring HI titers. The maternal antibodies was declined to under the protective level at 6 weeks of age. Therefore, it was considered that vaccination of pups for CPV should be started at 6 weeks of age. And when the combination vaccine was used, the immunogenicity of V vaccine was superior to the other vaccines and optimum vaccination schedule was 3 times vaccination with 3 weeks-interval starting vaccination at 6 weeks of age. Although pups were vaccinated at 6 weeks of age, the geometric mean CDV titers of pups in all groups by 9 weeks of age were under the protective level. So, hygienic measures including avoiding to exposure to the high risk areas were needed to prevent CPV infection in this period.

  • A 5-year-old, spayed female Maltese dog presented with generalized multifocal pruritic erythema and alopecia for a month. Initial skin biopsy suggested cutaneious histiocytosis. The dog had been treated with the immunosuppressive therapy for a month, but multifocal erythematous patches and plaques were newly observed. Direct imprint smear of cutaneous lesions suggested a lymphoma and rebiopsy was performed. Microscopic examination demonstrated a round cell tumor with epitheliotrophism to the epidermis and adnexal structures. The neoplastic round cells were strongly positive for CD3 yet negative for CD79a, indicting the tumor was cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma. After 2 cycles of oral administration of lomustine ($70mg/m^2$, once every 2-3 weeks), only partial response was observed. Alternative chemotherapy with gemcitabine ($500mg/m^2$, 30-minute IV infusion, once every week) was initiated. A total 3 cycles of gemcitabine failed to control the progression of disease, and the dog was euthanized on Day 69 after the 1st lomustine treatment.

  • Pentastarch is a hydroxyethyl starch similar to hetastarch, but lower average molecular weight and fewer hydroxyethyl groups which result in enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis and faster renal elimination. This report was performed to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of 10 % pentastarch[Pentaspan , group I] for plasma volume expansion after open heart surgery with that of 5% albumin[Plasmanate, group II]. There were no statistically significant differences between the group I [n=18] and group II [n:19] in the preoperative parameters [age, sex, body weight] and operative parameters[bypass time, aorta cross clamping time]. During the first 24 hours after arrival of the patient in the surgical intensive care unit, colloid solution [500--1000 ml] was infused to maintain left atrial pressure of more than 8 mmHg, or cardiac index of 2.0 L/min/M2 of more. In results, there were 3 complications of hypotension immediately after infusion of 5 % albumin solution and 2 among the 3 patients were excluded for the study. However there was no complication after infusion of 10 % pentastarch solution. Hemodynamic responses to infusion was similar for both groups, although in group I a greater increase in both left atrial pressure[mean 1.8 versus 0.7 mmHg, p< 0.05] and right atrial pressure [mean 2.2 versus 1.7 mmHg, p < 0.05] was observed during infusion of the first 500 ml. There were no significant differences in any of the measured respiratory parameters[PaO2, intrapulmonary shunt, and effective lung compliance]. Homodilution with colloid significantly reduced hemoglobin [mean 1.2 versus 0.8 gm/dl], and serum protein and albumin level[total protein;4.8$\pm$ 0.5 versus 5.2 $\pm$0.5 gm/dl, p < 0.05: albumin: 3.2 $\pm$0.4 versus 3.6 $\pm$0.6 gm/dl, p < 0.05] by 6:00 AM on 1 day postoperatively, however there were no significant differences on 7 day postoperatively. The mean serum colloid osmotic pressure and osmolarity was similar in both group. There were no abnormal findings of liver function and kidney function in all the patients. There were no significant between-group differences in bleeding time, platelets, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and amount of chest tube output measured on 1st and 7th postoperative day. These findings demonstrated that 10% pentastarch is more effective and safe for plasma volume expension than 5 % albumin solution with no adverse effects on coagulation. Also 10 % pentastarch is less expensive than 5 % albumin and it would appeare to be a reasonable first choice for plasma volume expansion.
