수원지역 여자 중학생의 총지방량 측정 (Total Body Fat Measurement of Middle School Girls in Suwon, Kyungido, Korea)

  • Total body fat measurement by means of skinfold thickness was performed in 295 middle school girls in Suwon, Korea. Skinfold thicknesses on 4 sites, namely, arm, back, abdomen, and waist were obtained and fat was calculated using mean skinfold thickness (MSF) and the following formulas. % Fat=0.747$\times$MSF (mm)+l6.21 Fat (kg) =0.619$\times$MSF (mm) +3.31. The following results were obtained. 1. In 85 (age. 13 yr) of the first year class girls skinfold thickness was: arm 6.9mm; back 8.2; abdomen 8.3; waist 10.7mm, mean thickness was 8.5mm. Fat was 22.6$\pm$1.56% body weight or 8.20±2.68kg. Lean body weight was 31.93$\pm$3.16kg. 2. In 107 (age : 14.2 yr) of the second year class girls skinfold thickness was : arm 7.6mm; back 9.7; abdomen 9.7; waist 12.4mm; and mean thickness was 9.8mm. Fat was 23.0$\pm$5.09% body weight or 9.36$\pm$1.87kg. Lean body weight was 34.29$\pm$1.76 kg. 3. In 103 (age : 15.1 yr) of the third year class girls skinfold thickness was : arm 7.6mm; back 10.3; abdomen 9.4; waist 11.9mm; and mean thickness was 9.8mm. Fat was 23.2$\pm$4.35% body weight or 9.36$\pm$1.18 kg. Lean body weight was 37.10$\pm$5.08 kg. 4. The ratio of mean skinfold thickness (mm) to body weight (kg) was 0.213 in 13 year old girls, 0.225 in 14 year, and 0.213 in 15 year old girls.

임신부의 체위와 체조성 및 임신의 결과 (Anthropometric and Body Compositional Measurements and Pregnancy Outcomes)

  • Anthropometric and body compositional changes and the outcomes of the pregnancies of 90 healthy Korean women were investigated in a longitudinal study. Their weight increased from 51.3$\pm$5.9kg to 65.1$\pm$7.8kg during their pregnancies. The total weight gain was 13.8$\pm$4.5kg, and therefore, weekly weight gain was 340$\pm$110g during the entire period of the pregnancy. The weight gain was composed of approximately 50-60% fat mass and 40-50% fat-free mass. Skinfold thicknesses, both of triceps and subscapular, increased during the pregnancies. The fat mass calculated from skinfold thickness and that measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis went on increasing during the pregnancies. Although there was a considerable difference with respect to the fat mass observed using the three methods, fat mass gain was 5.0-6.1kg and fat-free mass gain was 4.0-5.3kg from the first trimester to the third trimester of pregnancies. There were significant correlations between maternal anthropometric parameters and indices of pregnancy outcomes. Especially, the infant's birth weight was associated with maternal pre-pregnancy weight and weight gains during the pregnancies. The infant's birth length was related to the maternal weight observed at term(p<0.05) and weight gain during the entire pregnancies (p<0.05) . Neither increase of fat mass nor fat-free mass affected the outcomes of pregnancy. These results show that maternal weight gain during pregnancy is led by increments of approximately above 50% fat mass. The fat mass increase seems to be larger in central areas than in subcutaneous areas. Maternal weight gain during pregnancy, especially during late pregnancy, is a factor affecting the birth weight and length of infant. On the basis of the body compositional changes, it can be predicted that the additional energy requirement for pregnancy in Korean women is more than 200-230 MJ (64,500-76,250kca1).   • Purpose : The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of circuit weight training and aerobic exercise on the bodily formation and abdominal fat area of obese female college students. Methods : The female college students whose BMI is over $25kg/m^2$ were divided into the circuit weight training group and the aerobic exercise group and circuit weight training and aerobic exercise were conducted on the respective group five times a week. Resultlts : 1. The tendency of statistically significant reduction in weight, body fat percentage, and BMI was shown in both the circuit weight training group and the aerobic exercise group but there were no significant differences between these groups. 2. The tendency of statistically significant reduction in total abdominal fat area, and subcutaneous fat area was shown in both the circuit weight training group and the aerobic exercise group but there were no significant differences between these groups. 3. Visceral fat area was reduced more in the aerobic exercise group than in the circuit weight training group Conclusion : It was confirmed that exercise alone in the state of no dietary treatment being given could cause obese people bodily formation.

체중관리 영양교육에 참여한 여대생의 Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I)점수와 체중감소와의 상관성 (Diet Quality Index-International Score is Correlated with Weight Loss in Female College Students on a Weight Management Program)

  • This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the weight control program for female college students. The program was composed of diet and behavioral modifications for 8 weeks. A total of 78 participants enrolled the weight control program. Upon completion of the program, 53 participants experienced weight loss and 25 did not. The intakes of carbohydrate and fat were significantly decreased in both groups. However, the total diet quality index-international (DQII) scores as well as individual scores such as variety scores for protein source and adequacy scores for vegetable, fiber, calcium and vitamin C and moderation scores for empty calorie food were increased significantly in weight loss group only. In the weight loss group, weight, BMI, body fat, percent body fat and waist-hip ratio were decreased significantly. In addition, compared to the weight gain group, the weight loss group had higher changes in weight (weight loss group: -2.6% vs weight gain group: 1.5%, p < 0.001), body fat (-6.0% vs 0.0%, p < 0.001), percent body fat (-3.1% vs -0.3%, p < 0.001), waist-hip ratio (-1.0% vs 0.5%, p < 0.001) and BMI (-2.6% vs 1.3%, p < 0.01). There was no difference in blood profiles between the two groups. The changes in DQI-I scores were significantly correlated with the changes in body weight (r = -0.239, p < 0.05) and BMI (r = -0.224, p < 0.05), indicating that effective nutrition education could help improve diet quality leading to successful weight management among female college students.

Using Linear Body Measurements of Live Sheep to Predict Carcass Characteristics for Two Iranian Fat-tailed Sheep Breeds

  • Live animal selection programs that favor animals with a minimum amount of carcass fat are used for improving breeding flocks of sheep. To predict carcass characteristics of live sheep using body measurements in breeding flocks, 200 male and female lambs of two fat-tailed Iranian sheep breeds (Moghani and Makui) were used. Depth of soft tissue over the 12th rib of the live animals was measured with ultrasound (ULGR) and with hypodermic needle (NGR). The height at withers (HW), body length (BL), circumference of heart girth (CH) and width of hooks (WH), were measured. All animals were slaughtered; carcasses were cut into joints and dissected. Breed had a significant effect on all of the live easurements. The Moghani breed showed a higher value for HW, CH, ULGR and NGR, compared to that of Makui. Except for soft tissue depths; ULGR, NGR and GR, the male lambs showed higher values in live and carcass measurements than females. Percentages of carcass, total fat and intermuscular fat in females were higher than that of male lambs. In spite of the higher amount of subcutaneous and intermuscular fat in female (which is usually used for their physiological need, such as pregnancy and lactation), the male lambs had a heavier fat-tail than females. There was a wide range of variation of percentage of total carcass fat and total chemical fat content of carcass in the two breeds. Eventually this wide variation could be use by animal breeders for selection of animals with a lesser amount of carcass fat. Live weight of lambs showed a relatively low correlation with percentage of carcass lean, total fat and subcutaneous and intermuscular fat. Total lean meat was predicted with relatively high coefficients of determination in the two breeds ($R^2$=0.61 and 0.89, respectively). Live weight and carcass traits were predicted using simple measurements, but with $R^2$ ranging from 0.53 to 0.93.

체감의이인탕(體減薏苡仁湯)이 비만유도 흰쥐의 체중, 지방조직, 혈액변화, leptin과 Uncoupled protein에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Chegameyiin-tang extract on the change of the weight, tissue in epididymal fat, blood, leptin and uncoupled protein in visceral fat of obesity rats induced by high fat diet)

  • In Oriental medicine, there has been a theory that the deficiency of the Qi(氣) and the Phlegm(濕)-Damp(痰) bring Obesity. And so a clinically representative herb-medicine of the obesity treatments is Chegameyiin-tang . We observed the effects of Chegameyiin-tang on the fat tissues and what the function of Chegameyiin-tang is. These experimental studies were designed to investigate the effects of Chegameyiin-tang on the weight and lipid metabolism of obesity rats induced by high fat diet. And what is changed in the blood and how the leptin and uncoupled protein is affected. The measurement has been performed on (1) the weight of obese rats fed high fat diet, (2) the average size and number of epididymal fat cells, (3) the total cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose. and free fatty acids in the blood. and (4) the leptin and uncoupled protein in the blood are observed. The results are as follows; 1. In the sample group, the weight decrease occured significantly throughout the whole research period than that of control group. 2. In the sample group, epididymal fat weight showed significantly decrease in the 8th and 14th weeks than that of control group.3. In the sample group, epididymal fat cell size was decreased significantly in the 8th and 14th weeks than that of control group. 4. In the sample group, total cholesterol. triglyceride and glucose increased rather than control group in 8 weeks, those decreased significantly in 14 weeks. 5. In the sample group, free fatty acids and insulin increased rather than control group in 8 weeks. those showed some decrease in 14 weeks . 6. In the sample group, leptin decreased significantly than control group in 8, 14 weeks. Uncoupled protein showed some decrease in 8 weeks. that decreased significantly in 14 weeks.

Anti-Obesity Effect of a New Dietary Supplement Consisting of Hydroxycitrate, Carnitine and Red Pepper (3D-Relax Diet) in High-Fat Fed Rats

  • Anti-obesity effect of a new dietary supplement (3D-relax) in high-fat fed rats. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of 3D-relax; a proprietary formulation containing hydroxycitrate (233 mg/g), carnitine (150 mg/g) and red pepper (150 mg/g); on body weight, body fat, and serum lipids levels in rats fed a high-fat diet. Male SD 7-wk-old rats (n=8) were fed a high fat diet [52% total dietary energy (E%) from fat, 15.4 E% protein, 32.6E% carbohydrate] with or without 3D-relax administration (1 g/kg body weight/day) for 3 weeks. Administration of 3D-relax significantly reduced the increase in body weight compared to the group fed high fat without 3D-relax. Food efficiency ratio (FER) tended to be decreased with administration of 3D-relax, but was not significant. The perirenal and epididymal fat pad weights of vats administered 3D-relax were significantly lower than those of the high fat group that did not ingest 3D-relax during the 3 weeks. The oral administration of 3D-relax significantly increased HDL-cholesterol level and lowered total cholesterol level compared to those of high fat alone group. These results suggest that 3D-relax reduced body weight and fat gains, and those effects are presumably linked to its inhibitory effects on lipogenesis.

녹차 된장이 고지방식이를 급여한 흰쥐의 체중 및 혈청 지질성분에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Green Tea-Soybean Paste on Weights and Serum Lipid Profiles in Rats Fed High Fat Diet)

  • 본 실험은 녹차된장이 고지방식이를 급여한 흰쥐의 체중변화 및 혈청 지단백질 등에 미치는 영향을 연구하고자 기본식이 (basal diet)를 급여한 B군과 0.5% 콜레스테롤과 15% 라드를 첨가한 고지방식이를 급여한 H군, 고지방식이와 20% 일반된장을 첨가한 식이를 급여한 H-S군, 고지방식이에 녹차된장을 첨가한 식이를 급여한 H-0.6GS군(0.6% 녹차 추출물)과 H-4GS(4% 녹차가구)군을 10주간 사육한 후 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 체중 증가량은 고지방식이군인 H군이 가장 높았으며, 녹차된장군인 H-4GS군이 일반된장군보다 체중증가가 적은 것으로 나타났다(p<0.05). 식이 효율(FER)이나 식이 섭취량은 군간에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 간의 무게는 고 지방식이군인 H군이 일반된장군(H-S군)과 녹차된장군(H-GS군)보다 높았으며 (p<0.05), 실험군 중에서 H-4GS군의 간의 무게가 가장 낮았다. 2. 혈청 포도당(glucose), 요산(uric acid), 빌리루빈(bilirubin), 총단백질(total protein)의 농도는 각 군 간의 차이가 없었다. 혈중 GOT, GPT, BUN의 농도는 녹차된장군이 일반된장군이나 고지방군에 비해 낮았고, 일반된장군과 녹차된장군간의 차이는 유의적이었다(p<0.05). 3. 일반된장군과 녹차된장군의 경우 모두 콜레스테롤의 농도가 고지방식이군보다 낮았고(p<0.05), 중성지방의 농도는 녹차된장섭취군이 일반된장군보다 낮았으며(p<0.05), 녹차된장군간의 차이도 있었다(p<0.05). RFI(risk factor index)는 녹차된장군이 가장 낮게 나타났고, 녹차된장군, 일반된장군, 고지방식이군 간의 차이는 유의적이었다(p<0.05).

고지방식이로 유도된 고지혈증 모델 흰쥐에서 지방과 제니스테인 섭취가 지질대사 및 항산화능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dietary Fat and Genistein on Lipid Metabolism and Antioxidant Activity in Hyperlipidemic Male Rats induced High Fat Diet)

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether dietary factors, normal fat and genistein leads to beneficial improvement of lipid metabolism and oxidative stress in adult hyperlipidemic male rats. Seven wk-old male SD rats were fed high fat diet (15% fat, 1% cholesterol) for 4 wks for induction of hyperlipidemic model rat. Weight-matched rats were then assigned to four groups according to dietary fat level (7% or 15% fat) and genistein contents (0 or 320 mg/kg diet). Food intake was significantly decreased by both high fat intake and genistein supplementation compared with normal fat intake and genistein no supplementaion. But weight gain was significantly decreased by genistein supplementation in normal fat intake compared with the other groups. Total lipid, total cholesterol and triglyceride in serum and liver were significantly decreased by normal fat intake compared with high fat intake. But total cholesterol in liver was significantly increased by genistein supplementation in both high fat and normal fat intake. TBARS in serum and liver was less produced by normal fat intake compared with high fat intake but TBARS in liver was significantly increased by genistein supplementation compared with genistein no supplementation in normal fat intake. Glutathione reductase activity in erythrocytes was significantly reduced by genistein supplementation in normal fat intake compared with the other groups. Glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities in liver were significantly inhibited by normal fat intake compared with high fat intake. Catalase activity in liver was significantly increased by genistein supplementation compared with genistein no supplementation in high fat intake. Nitrite was significantly decreased by normal fat intake compared with high fat intake. These results suggest that normal fat intake has the treatment effect against risk factors related with cardiovascular disease by reducing lipid profiles, lipid peroxidation. And genistein shows action as a antioxidant replacing antioxidant enzymes but also may act as prooxidant causing the production of TBARS.

High Molecular Weight Poly-Gamma-Glutamic Acid Regulates Lipid Metabolism in Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet and Humans

  • We investigated the effect of high molecular weight polygamma- glutamic acid (hm ${\gamma}$-PGA) on adiposity and lipid metabolism of rats in the presence of an obesity-inducing diet. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a normal-fat (11.4% kcal fat, NFC) or high-fat (51% kcal fat, HFC) diet. After 5 weeks, half of each diet-fed group was treated with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (NFP or HFP) for 4 weeks. The HFC group had significantly higher body weight, visceral fat mass, fasting serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and leptin, and lower serum HDL cholesterol level compared with those of the NFC group (p < 0.05). Treatment with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA decreased body weight gain and perirenal fat mass (p<0.05), fasting serum total cholesterol, and mRNA expression of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), regardless of dietary fat contents (p < 0.01). However, hm ${\gamma}$-PGA increased serum HDL cholesterol in the HFC group (p < 0.05). In vitro, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMGCoA) reductase activity was suppressed by the addition of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA. In agreement with observations in animal study, the supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (150 mg/day) to 20 female subjects in an 8-week double-blind, placebocontrolled study resulted in a tendency to decrease total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol concentrations. We thus conclude that dietary supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA may act as a hypocholestrolemic agent, secondary to its inhibitor effect on HMG-CoA reductase, and decrease abdominal adiposity by decreasing hepatic lipogenesis. The present study is an important first step in establishing the effect of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA on cholesterol levels in rats and humans.
