  • AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional fracture resistances, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of two nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments made of different heat-treated alloy: Aurum Blue (heat-treated) and Aurum Pro (conventional). Methods: Forty-five Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro NiTi files were selected for the three mechanical tests (n=15). For the torsional resistance test, 3 mm file tip was fixed and the shaft was driven clockwise at 2 rpm until fracture occurred by using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was evaluated by rotating instruments in artificial canal with dynamic mode. Bending stiffness was tested by observation of the bending moment on attaining a 45° bend. The results were analyzed by student-t tests at a significance level of 95%. The fractured surface of each groups were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Aurum Blue showed significantly higher toughness, ultimate strength, distortion angle, and number of cycles to failure than those of Aurum Pro (p < 0.05). However, Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro did not differ significantly in terms of bending stiffness. SEM showed typical topographic appearances of the cyclic fatigue and torsional fracture. Conclusions: Under the limitations of this study, heat-treated instruments showed higher flexibility and fracture resistances than conventional NiTi instruments.

  • A series of shaking table tests were conducted on a 1:12 scale model using scaled Taft N21E earthquake records to investigate the seismic performance of a 17-story high-rise reinforced concrete building structure with a high degree of torsional eccentricity and soft-story irregularities in the bottom two stories. The main characteristics of the behaviors were: (1) a sudden change of the predominant vibration mode from the mode of translation and torsion to the torsional mode after the flexible side underwent a substantial inelastic deformation; (2) an abrupt increase in the torsional stiffness during this change of modes; (3) a warping behavior of the wall in the torsional mode; and (4) a unilateral overturning moment in the transverse direction to the table excitations. In this study, efforts were made to simulate the above characteristics using a nonlinear analysis program, Perform3D. The advantages and limitations are presented with the nonlinear models available in this software, as they are related to the correlation between analysis and test results.

  • This study investigates elastic lateral-torsional buckling(LTB) of T-beams subjected to pure bending using finite element analysis(FEA). The results from the FEA are compared with those from the current American Institute of Steel Council(AISC) Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) Specifications. The comparison indicates that AISC-LRFD provide unsafe values for T-beam subjected to pure bending. Therefore, a new design equation are presented using results from the FEA. The new equation could be easily used to calculate the elastic lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance of T-beam for beam design and to expand the new equation for developing LTB equations of T-beam subjected to general loading conditions such as a concentrated load, distributed load, or a seres of concentrated load.

  • Composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs has been widely used in civil engineering practice as an alternative of conventional pre-stressed concrete box-girder because the efficiency of pre-stressing can be increased and weight reduction of superstructure can be achieved by replacing concrete webs as a corrugated steel webs. However, most of previous researches were limited in shear and flexural behavior of such girder so that the torsional behaviors of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs are not fully understood yet and it needs to be investigated. Some of previous researchers developed the nonlinear theory for torsional analysis of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs. However, their theories were developed by ignoring the tensile behavior of concrete. Thus, there are certain limitations in analysis of serviceability such as cracking moment and torsional stiffness of the girder. This paper presents the analytical model for torsional behavior of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs considering tensile behavior of concrete. Based on the proposed analytical model, nonlinear torsional analysis program of composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs was developed. Then, for verification of validation of the developed model, test for the girder was conducted and the results were compared with those of analytical model. Finally, parametric study was conducted and the effects of tensile behavior of concrete on the torsional behavior of the girder were discussed.

  • This paper presents the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) of beams or girders with continuous lateral support at top flange. Traditional moment gradient factors ($C_b$) given by AISC in LRFD Specification for Structural Steel Buildings and by AASHTO in LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were reviewed. Finite-element method buckling analyses of doubly symmetric I-shaped beams with continuous top bracing were conducted to develop new moment gradient factors. A uniformly distributed load was applied at midheight and either or both end moments were applied at the ends of beams. The proposed solutions are simple and accurate for use by engineers to determine the LTB resistance of beams.

  • In this paper a nonlinear finite element analysis model is established for cold-formed steel zed-section purlins subjected to uplift loading. In the model, the lateral and rotational restraints provided by the sheeting to the purlin are simplified as a lateral rigid restraint imposed at the upper flange-web junction and a rotational spring restraint applied at the mid of the upper flange where the sheeting is fixed. The analyses are performed by considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities. The influences of the rotational spring stiffness and initial geometrical imperfections on the uplift loading capacity of the purlin are investigated numerically. It is found that the rotational spring stiffness has significant influence on the purlin performance. However, the influence of the initial geometric imperfections on the purlin performance is found only in purlins of medium or long length with no or low rotational spring stiffness.

  • A new method has been proposed for the calibration of frictional forces in atomic force microscopy. Angle conversion factor is defined using the relationship between torsional angle and frictional signal. Once the factor is obtained from a cantilever, it can be applied to other cantilevers without additional experiments. Moment balance equations on the flat surface and top edge of a commercial step grating are used to obtain angle conversion factor. Proposed method is verified through another step grating test and frictional behavior of Mica.

  • The effects of various factors were studied on the process of a steel cord by twisting wires. To remove residual twisting moment after the steel cord process, the twisting angles of residual elasti c twisting and overtwisting were measured and compared with finite element results. The agreement between experimental data and finite element calculations was good for the angles of residual elastic twisting and over-twisting. The stress distributions in a steel cord under complex loading conditions were also obtained by using the finite element analysis.

  • This work analytically investigated the radiated noise of a helical gear-housing system due to the excitation of helical gears. The helical gears were modeled as a 12-degree of freedom mass-spring-damper system; the shaft was modeled as a rod, a beam, and a torsional shaft; and the gear housing was modeled as a clamped circular plate with viscous damping. The modeling of this system used transfer matrices for helical gears, shafts, and bearings. Damping for both the bearings and the plate were obtained by modal testing. For the evaluation of noise, sound pressure from the plate due to the force and the moment in both radial and tangential directions was analytically derived by the Rayleigh integral. The analytical derivation and parameters from the experiment were applied to an analysis of noise for the two sets of helical gears with differing gear ratios. The analysis showed that the moment excitation in both helical gears contributed more to the noise of the plate than axial force excitation.
