  • This study focuses on the effects of using open stator slots in an interior permanent magnet traction motor with a magnetic slot wedge design in order to increase the power density at its base speed. In addition, such a configuration reduces the torque ripple under field-weakening conditions. Five different wedge models were selected, each of which was evaluated using a finite element analysis (FEA). Based on the initial model, we designed magnetic slot wedges for maximum back-EMF and minimum cogging torque. In addition, the d-q axis inductance was slightly altered due to the magnetic slot wedges. Finally, we analyzed the performance of a traction machine under field weakening control. Moreover, we have outlined the requirements for an ideal magnetic slot wedge design.

  • This paper presents performance comparison between concentrated winding and distributed winding of IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) which is recently used for light-weight railway applications. Motors are designed on various schemes and analyzed by using FEM (Finite Element Method) instead of EMCNM (Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method) in order to take into account saturation and non-linear magnetic property. The overall performance such as torque, torque ripple, losses, demagnetization, efficiency, power density and so on are investigated in detail at the rated and maximum operating speed. The results of the analysis found that both concentrated and distributed winding IPMSMs are promising candidates for high power railway traction motor.

  • Air gap flux density is obtained strictly from air gap permeance and MMF distribution using the design parameter of BLDCM when the stator slot is considered. Then the theoretical equations representing the cogging torque and BEMF are proposed. The effect of skew is described analytically, and skew effect on air gap permeance and MMF is studied. Consequently we verified analytically that skew of slots and magnets influenced on the reduction of the cogging torque and BEMF ripple, and the shape of BEMF.

  • The single phase switched reluctance motor(SRM) is simpler in control circuit because the number of switching devices is fewer than the poly phase SRM. The energy density per unit volume is very big because all stator poles are excited simultaneously by a single switching power source. But it must be provided a starting device on account of not being generated the starting torque at specific rotor positions. And also it has some demerits that have a torque ripple, noise and vibration because of being excited by switching pulse power source. Therefore, to make up for these demerits, it is realized many studies for the structure design used by computer and the operating methods by power electronics technique. In this paper, we'll present the comparison of the single phase SRM with the various rotor pole face types, as like stepped rotor pole face type and general rotor pole face type. For the torque characteristics analysis.

  • Rotatory two-phase transverse flux machine(TFM) is a relatively new type of motor with high power density, high torque, and low speed in comparison to conventional electrical motors. However, it has some shortcomings,.i.e. complex construction and high possibility of the magnetically induced nitration due to its inherent structure. This Paper investigates the characteristics of the magnetic force and the torque in the rotatory two-phase TFM by using the 3-D finite element method and the spectral analysis. This research shows that the average torque decreases and that the torque ripple increases as the phase delay increases. It also shows that the unbalanced magnetic force is one of the dominant excitation forces in this machine. And it proposes a new topology of rotatory two-phase TFM to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic force.

  • Single phase switched reluctance motor has a merit in practical use because it has simple operating drives and control systems, very high energy density per unit volume comparing with three phase SRM. But it must have a starting device. This paper presents a single phase SRM model with a stepped rotor pole, so as to reduce the torque ripple. Also it is simulated the designed prototype model by FEM for the prediction of characteristics.

  • The torque ripple that is generated by the irregularity of magnetic flux density on the BLDC motor in a satellite actuator degrades the satellite attitude control performance. In this paper, the performance analysis of permanent magnet configurations (shape, arrangement, and air gap) is simulated by the Finite Element Method (FEM) to find the appropriate combination of the configuration. The configuration is chosen by comparing between rectangular and arc-shaped permanent magnets and single-arrangement and dual-arrangement magnets. The performance is verified by a prototype.

  • This paper deals with the effect of teeth number variation in permanent Magnet DC motor. As teeth number varies, both flux density distribution and winding pitch are influenced, which is closely related to torque-speed characteristics, output power, and efficiency. In this study, motor design carried out using finite element method, and prototype motors were manufactured to test their performance analysis. In spite of torque ripple due to cogging effect better characteristic of machine using small teeth number was recorded than the motors with large number of rotor teeth. One of that reasons is caused by adopting large coil-length due to large number of teeth, i. e. large coil-pitch.

  • This paper deals with design and analysis of surface-mounted PM (SPM) motor for compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicle applications according to slot/pole combination. First, required torque-speed curve characteristics are determined from operating conditions of the compressor. Restricted conditions such as motor size limit and current density are also determined. And then, under same rated and restricted conditions, twelve models which have different slot/pole combinations each other are designed for various pole arc/pitch ratio using simple equations and 2-d finite element (FE) analyses. Designed models are analyzed and compared in terms of back-emf THD, cogging torque, torque ripple, power losses, efficiency, etc. On the basis of analysis results, it is found that the motor with a 6-pole PM rotor and a 27-slot stator has most outstanding performances in electromagnetic aspects. Finally, through the mechanical modal analysis and demagnetization analysis, it is concluded that the determined motor is most suitable for the compressor of air-conditioning system for electric vehicles.
