  • This paper presents a walking guidance system for blind pedestrians in an outdoor environment using just one single camera. Unlike many existing travel-aid systems that rely on stereo-vision, the proposed system aims to get necessary information of the road environment by using just single camera fixed at the belly of the user. To achieve this goal, a top-view image of the road is used, on which obstacles are detected by first extracting local extreme points and then verified by the polar edge histogram. Meanwhile, user motion is estimated by using optical flow in an area close to the user. Based on these information extracted from image domain, an audio message generation scheme is proposed to deliver guidance instructions via synthetic voice to the blind user. Experiments with several sidewalk video-clips show that the proposed walking guidance system is able to provide useful guidance instructions under certain sidewalk environments.

  • Recently, development of technologies for autonomous vehicles has been actively carried out. This paper proposes a computer vision system to recognize lanes, crosswalks, and stop lines for autonomous vehicles. This vision system first recognizes lanes required for autonomous driving using the RANSAC algorithm and the Kalman filter, and changes the viewpoint from the perspective-angle view of the street to the top-view using the fact that the lanes are parallel. Then in the reconstructed top-view image this system recognizes a crosswalk based on its geometrical characteristics and searches for a stop line within a region of interest in front of the recognized crosswalk. Experimental results show excellent performance of the proposed vision system in recognizing lanes, crosswalks, and stop lines.

  • In this paper, a novel algorithm capable of detecting generic obstacles on a flat surface is proposed. The algorithm fundamentally exploits a distortion phenomena taken place in remapping process of original stereo images to a virtual top-view. Based on the distortion phenomena, we construct stereo polar histograms of edge maps, detect peaks on them, and search for matched peaks on both histograms using a Dynamic Programming (DP). Eventually, the searched corresponding peaks lead to estimate obstacles' positions. The advantages of the proposed algorithm are that it is not largely affected by an intensity difference between a pair of stereo images and does not depend on the typical stereo matching methodologies. Furthermore, the algorithm identifies the obstacles' positions quite robustly.

  • In food-printing field, precise positioning technique for a printing object is very important. In this paper, we propose cup positioning method for a latte-art printer through image processing. A camera sensor is installed on the upper side of the printer, and the image obtained from this is projected and converted into a top-view image. Then, the edge lines of the image is detected first, and then the coordinate of the center and the radius of the cup are detected through a Circular Hough transformation. The performance evaluation results show that the image processing time is 0.1 ~ 0.125 sec and the cup detection rate is 92.26%. This means that a cup is detected almost perfectly without affecting the whole latte-art printing time. The center point coordinates and radius values of cups detected by the proposed method show very small errors less than an average of 1.5 mm. Therefore, it seems that the problem of the printing position error is solved.

  • In this paper, lane and curvature detection algorithm based on the curve template matching method is proposed. To eliminate the perspective effect of the original image, the input image is transformed to a top view image. From this top view image, its edge image is created. To increase the accuracy of detection, a novel edge detection method, which shows a strength in lane detection, is proposed. In the first step, straight lanes are detected from the edge image, and then the Curve Template Matching(CTM) method is applied to detect the curved lanes and to find their curvatures. Since the proposed CTM method uses only the simple equations, such as line and circle equations, to detect the curved lane, the algorithm is simple. Moreover, we used the detected lane information in the previous frames to detect the current frame's lanes, the detection results become more reliable. The proposed algorithm has been tested in various road conditions (highway, urban street, night time highway, etc.). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can process about 70 frames per second with the successful lane detection rate over 95% and curvature detection rate about 90%.

  • This paper proposes a vision-based food recognition method for automated production of custom cakes. A small camera module mounted on a food art printer recognizes objects' shape and estimates their center points through image processing. Through the perspective transformation, the top-view image is obtained from the original image taken at an oblique position. The line and circular hough transformations are applied to recognize square and circular shapes respectively. In addition, the center of gravity of each figure are accurately detected in units of pixels. The test results show that the shape recognition rate is more than 98.75% under 180 ~ 250 lux of light and the positioning error rate is less than 0.87% under 50 ~ 120 lux. These values sufficiently meet the needs of the corresponding market. In addition, the processing delay is also less than 0.5 seconds per frame, so the proposed algorithm is suitable for commercial purpose.

  • This paper proposes a forward vehicle movement estimation algorithm for the image-based forward collision warning. The road region in the acquired image is designated as a region of interest (ROI) and a distance look up table (LUT) is made in advance. The distance LUT shows horizontal and vertical real distances from a reference pixel as a test vehicle position to any pixel as a position of a vehicle on the ROI. The proposed algorithm detects vehicles in the ROI, assigns labels to them, and saves their distance information using the distance LUT. And then the proposed algorithm estimates the vehicle movements such as approach distance, side-approaching and front-approaching velocities using distance changes between frames. In forward vehicle movement estimation test using road driving videos, the proposed algorithm makes the valid estimation of average 98.7%, 95.9%, 94.3% in the vehicle movements, respectively.

  • Absolute radiometric calibration is a crucial process in converting the electromagnetic signals obtained from satellite sensors into physical quantities. It is performed to enhance the accuracy of satellite data, facilitate comparison and integration with other satellite datasets, and address changes in sensor characteristics over time or due to environmental conditions. In this study, field campaigns were conducted to perform vicarious calibration for the multispectral channels of the CAS500-1. Two valid field observations were obtained under clear-sky conditions, and the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance was simulated using the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission 6 (MODTRAN 6) radiative transfer model. While a linear relationship was observed between the simulated TOA radiance of tarps and CAS500-1 digital numbers(DN), challenges such as a wide field of view and saturation in CAS500-1 imagery suggest the need for future refinement of the calibration coefficients. Nevertheless, this study represents the first attempt at absolute radiometric calibration for CAS500-1. Despite the challenges, it provides valuable insights for future research aiming to determine reliable coefficients for enhanced accuracy in CAS500-1's absolute radiometric calibration.

  • The real world is spatially modelled conceptually either as discrete objects or earth surface. The generated data models are then usually represented as vector and raster respectively. Although there are limited cases where only one data model is sufficient to solve the spatial problem at hand, it is now generally accepted that GIS should be able to handle various types of data model. Recent advances in spatial technology introduced even more variety of heterogeneous data models and the need is ever growing to handle and manage efficiently these large variety of spatial data. The OGC (Open GIS Consortium), an international organization pursuing standardization in the geospatial industry. recently introduced the GMLJP2 (Geographic Mark-Up Language JP2) format which enables store and handle heterogeneous spatial data. The GMLJP2 format, which is based on the JP2 format which is an abbreviation for JPEG2000 wavelet image compression format, takes advantage of the versatility of the GML capabilities to add extra data on top of the compressed image. This study takes a close look into the GMLJP2 format to analyse and exploit its potential to handle and mange hetergeneous spatial data. Aerial image, digital map and LIDAR data were successfully transformed end archived into a single GMLJP2 file. A simple viewing program was made to view the heterogeneous spatial data from this single file.
