This study was carried out to improve the rice grain quality of Ilpum cultivar, especially to reduce the chalky rice rate by controlling top dressing of nitrogen application ratio at the tillering and panicle initiation stage. In the rice plant growth, the number of tiller and leaf area index of maximum tillering stage were influenced by basal dressing and top dressing at tillering stage; however those of heading stage were mainly influenced by top dressing at panicle initiation stage. In yield and yield components, they were influence by the top dressing at panicle initiation stage and the rice yield was increased by percentage of the top dressing. The protein content of rice grain was increased as the rate of top dressing at panicle initiation stage was increased. The rate of chalky and damaged rice was remarkably increased as the top dressing ratio was increased, resulting in reducing the rate of head rice rate. As the results, the characteristics of milling and rice quality was improved when the amount of top dress was reduced as 50% at the panicle initiation stage, and the yield of head rice also increased.
In order to obtain information necessary for attaining maximum yield of rice by increasing nitrogen efficiency, effects of top dressing of nitrogen fertilizer at the later part of growing season were investigated and results obtained are summurized as follows: 1. The increased application of nitrogen fertilizer was very effective in increasing leaf areas and net assimilation rate of rice plants. The spikelets number per hill was also increased due to heavy nitrogen fertilizer. 2. The concentrated top dressing at the later part of plant growth apparently increased the crop growth rate at the reproduction stage and ripening stage of rice, respectively. The nitrogen efficiency was greatly improved by the concentrated top nitrogen dressing through the increase of effective tiller number and the improvement of production organ to non productive organ ratio. 3. The concentrated top nitrogen dressing at the later growing season was considered to be one of the most effective methods of fertilizer applications as well as cultivation of fertilizer resistant varieties for the high yield of rice and improving soil fertility.
Experiments were conducted to know N, P, and K top dressing effects on yield and other agronomic characters of rice plants grown in 5-year differently fertilized soils. Four levels of nitrogen, 0, 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6kg/10a, were applied 32 days before heading in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots. Four levels of P_2 $O_{5}$ and K_2 O of 0, 4, 8 and 12kg/l0a were applied 40 days before heading in 5-year NK and NP applied plots, respectively. 1. Heading was delayed by seven days in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots compared to NK, NP, or NPK applied plots where nitrogen was applied as basal. However, in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots heading was delayed from 1 to 4 days as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased. Phosphorus and potassium did not affect heading date of rice plants. 2. In 5-year non-fertilized plot grain yield increased as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased up to 2.4kg/l0a due to both increased number of panicles per hill and spikelets per panicle. However, in 5-year PK applied plot amounts of nitrogen top dressing did not affect grain yield; the number of panicle per hill increased, but the percentage of ripened grains and grain weight tended to decrease as nitrogen levels increase. 3. The number of panicle/maximum tillers ratio in percentage increased markedly as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots with maximum value of 130% on the basis of maximum tillers at vegetative stage. 4. Top dressing of phosphorus and potassium did not affect yield and other agronomic characters in NK and NP applied plots.
This study was conducted to evaluate the amount of nitrogen (N) top dressing based on the normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) by ground based sensors for leaf perilla under the polyethylene house. Experimental design was the randomized complete block design for five N fertilization levels and conventional fertilization with 3 and 4 replications in Gumsan-gun and Milyang-si field, respectively. Dry weight (DW), concentration of N, and amount of N uptake by leaf perilla as well as NDVIs from sensors were measured monthly. Difference of growth characteristics among treatments in Gumsan field was wider than Milyang. SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter reading explained 43.4% of the variability in N content of leaves in Gumsan field at $150^{th}$ day after seedling (DAS) and 45.9% in Milyang at $239^{th}$ DAS. Indexes of red sensor (RNDVI) and amber sensor (ANDVI) at $172^{th}$ day after seedling (DAS) in Gumsan explained 50% and 57% of the variability in N content of leaves. RNDVI and ANDVI at $31^{th}$ DAS in Milyang explained 60% and 65% of the variability in DW of leaves. Based on the relationship between ANDVI and N application rate, ANDVI at $172^{th}$ DAS in Gumsan explained 57% of the variability in N application rate but non significant relationship in Milyang field. Average sufficiency index (SI) calculated from ratio of each measurement index per maximum index of ANDVI at $172^{th}$ DAS in Gumsan explained 73% of the variability in N application rate. Although the relationship between NDVIs and growth characteristics was various upon growing season, SI by NDVIs of ground based remote sensors at top dressing season was thought to be useful index for recommendation of N top dressing rate of leaf perilla.
The pot experiment was conducted primarily to clarify the relationship between lime application and they amount of potassium for the basal and top dressings on paddy rice. (Orizae sativa L. cultivar; variety Jinheung) The soils mixed with lime and without lime were separately filled in to 0.2827 a. open-bottom concretepots. The soil with lime was treated with slaked lime, at two weeks before transplanting to correct soil pH. around 7.0. The total amount of potassium 12 kilograms per 10a was applied by two or three split doses during transplanting, 19 days after transplanting and primodial stages. The results of experiment obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The application of potash in the rate of 4kg per 10a or less for basal dressing and the remaining amount of potash for top dressing at 19 days after transplanting and primodial stage or one top dressing, at primodial stage have increased the yield of paddy with increased number of panicles per hill, milliequivalent ratio of $K^-/Ca^{++}+Mg^{++}$ in leaves in the later stage of growth, number of ripened grains per panicle, and rate of grain maturity. 2. On the other hand, the greater the amount of potassium given for the basal dressing (over 4kilograms per 10a), the smaller number of tillers and panicles were resulted. And the tendency was considered chiefly due to high salt concentration at the early stage of rice growth.
In order to evaluate the effect of developed Nk compound fertilizers, 17-0-17 granular and powder, and 17-0-14 granules in comparison with single fertilizers, urea and potassium on rice (Oryzae sativa) ; cultivar, Milyang 23, (Orizae Sativa), a field experiment was carried out. Results obtained are as follows : 1. The top dressing of NK compound fertilizers tended to produce higher paddy yield than that of single fertilizers; urea and patasstum muriate. 2. The absorption of potassium and nitrogen by rice plant from the plot of NK granular compound fertilizer, 17-0-17, was greater than from the plots the absorption of those elements received other types of ferilizers and application method The absorded K/Ca+Mg ratio in milli equivalent basis in plant was also appeared to be in same order as the absorption of nitrogen and potassium. 3. From the results of present study it seemed necessary to evaluate the NK compound fertilizer for the top dressing at effective tillering stage of rice as well.
In 1969, a pot experiment with four replications of 10 treatments including control(without potash) was carried out in order to study the effect of potash top-dressings in the condition of heavy nitrogen application on rice. The results obtained may be summarized as follows. 1. When potash was applied 70% as basic dressing and 30% as top-dressing at ear-formation stage, a considerable increase of the yield of paddy was obtained as compared to the treatment of the whole amount of potash as basic dressing. 2. The antagonism phenomenon of $K_2O$ contents with N contents in the plants appeared to be severe at the maximum reduction division stage and ear-formation stage is next. 3. $K_2O/N$ ratio gave a positive correlation with the yield components before heading and specially, $K_2O/N$ ratio at heading stage was considerably correlated with ripening percentage.
In this experiment, we expected yield increase depending on the control of ineffective tiller, heightening of effective tillering ratio and continuous supply of nitrogen until later growth stage of rice plant by deep layer split application. Treats were applied at Tongil and Jinheung variety, clayey loam and sandy loam soil, and drained and non-drained condition. Nitrogenous fertilizer application wab adopted as liquefied(50%) and lumped (50% and 80%) fertilizer at 12cm depth of soil before 35 days of rice heading time against the standard soil surface application. The results are summarized as follaw. 1. a. Jinheung showed great variant width of tiller numbers per rice plant growth stage, and low effective tillering ratio at soil surface dressing. But in the case of deep layer split application, the number of tiller increased normally, and effective tillering ratio was high. b. At Tonsil, the width of increase and decrease range of effective tiller number between soil surface dressing and deep layer split application was not so high as Jinheung. Deep layer split application of 80% lumped fertilizer showed maximum effective tillering ratio ($83%{\sim}93%$). C. In the case of Jinheung, it was supposed that deep layer split application of 80% lumped fertilizer was excessive nitrogen quantity. d. Effective tillering ratio was higher than Tonsil at Jinheung. 2. The number of grains per hill was increased by the deep layer split application, but the ripening ratio was decreased inversely with the increase of total grain number. 3. Length of top leaves was elongated at Jinheung by deep layer split application. It showed significant correlation between top leaves length and grain yield. 4. Deep layer split application inclosed N content of harvested straw. Yield and N content of straw showed possitive correlation. 5. The ratio of unhulled grain yield per straw weight was increased by deep layer splication. This ratio was higher at Jinheung than Tonsil. 6. Grain yield was appeared in order of 80% lumped fertilizer>50% lumped fertilizer>50% liquefied fertilizer>surface dressing by the deep layer split application. The yield increasing factors were the increasing of effective tillering ratio, number of panicles per hill and number of ripening grains per hill. 7. Grain yield was increased at Tongil in sandy loam soil and at Jinheung in clayey loam soil by deep layer split application. 8. The grain yield was increased at drained conditions of clayey loam soil and non-drained conditions of sandy loam soil. But in the case of 80% lumped fertilizer of deep layer split application at the sandy loam soil, the yield was not increased at non-drained conditions. 9. The effect of yield increase by deep layer split application comparing with the surface dressing was higher at Tonsil than ginheung, in spite of low ripening ratio of Tonsil caused by low temperature at heading and harvesting time.
The effect of carbofuran (2, 3-Dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-benzofuran-7-ylmethyl carbamate) on rice growth was evaluated as a direct growth stimulant of rice. For this, several laboratory and field trials conducted from 1981 to 1986 at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station. Carbofuran solution affected the germination of rice seed. The growth of seminal roots was adversely affected by the increase of carbofuran concentrations while the length of single root became longer with the concentration increment up to 50 ppm. Carbofuran application (0.18g ai/$m^2$) at the rice nurserybed significantly enhanced the rice growth and recovered from the Low temperature damage. The enhancement effect was more pronounced at the plot that applied carbofuran before rice seeding as soil incorporation than top-dressing. The effect of growth enhancement further extended to transplanted lowland rice. This effect was greater at double cropping area (late of June transplanting) compared to single cropping area (May transplanting). Among important agronomic traits, the increment of panicle number was the most important direct effect for increasing rice grain yield by carbofuran application. Carbofuran application also exhibited the reducing effect against low temperature damage at reductive division stage and at rice heading stage and against submergence damage at booting stage through enhancement of fertile grain ratio, ripening ratio or photosynthetic activity.
Decomposition of green manure is necessary for the nutrient supply in farm soil. Hairy vetch as a green manure is superior to other winter legumes in terms of wintering ability and N accumulation. This experiment was carried out to investigate the decomposition and N release of hairy vetch and its effect on rice production as the following crop in paddy field. Decomposition of hairy vetch placed by soil depth of 0, 10 and 20cm at transplanting time was investigated by mesh bag method, which was enclosed chopped residue in mesh bags. The fate of $^{15}$ N derived from $^{15}$ N-labeled hairy vetch was investigated at harvest in three levels of N fertilization. Grain yield of the transplanted paddy rice cultured with hairy vetch as starter N were compared with that of applying urea as starter N in the field. Hairy vetch residue decomposed very rapidly both in transplanted and dry-seeded paddy field. In transplanted paddy field, hairy vetch residue lost 72-81 % and 86-90% of its weight after one and five month, respectively, as affected by incorporation depth. The C/N ratio of the decomposing vetch residue increased sharply during the early stages and after then, decreased slowly. The amounts of N and P released from the vetch were about 90% and 97% of initial content after one month, respectively. Recoveries of hairy vetch-$^{15}$ N by rice plant were 30.6, 34.6 and 35.7% in 0, 6 and 12 kg urea-N 10 $a^{-l}$ application, respectively, indicating that N fertilization increased the recovery of hairy vetch. $^{15}$ N. Hairy vetch residue incorporated as starter maintained significant N $H_4$$^{+}$-N concentration in soil water of plow layer until effective tillering stage. Grain yield in the plot applied with hairy vetch was not significantly different from that in the plot with urea. We concluded that hairy vetch incorporation could substitute starter N fertilization and showed possibility to reduce N amount of top-dressing.g.g.
