Outcome of esthetic ceramic restorations are affected by tooth size, gingival contour, occlusal relationship, etc. For this reason, demand of orthodontic treatment before esthetic ceramic restoration is increasing. If a Bolton ratio discrepancy, a problem of the maxillary incisor's vertical position, a problem of inclination of anterior teeth, a pathogenic occlusion is existed, a pre-prosthodontic orthodontics should be accomplished. These problems can be satisfactory only after the prosthetic treatment is performed after orthodontic treatment. When orthodontic treatment is given, it should be treated with the following principle. 1. Treat it in the direction of functioning occlusion. 2. Keep the patient's stable occlusal scheme. 3. Treat the teeth by considering the average tooth size and Bolton ratio. Ortho-Prostho combined treatment with optimal treatment plan can lead a patient's function, esthetics, and long-term stability.
The present report presents a case of dens invaginatus (DI) in a patient with 4 maxillary incisors. A 24-year-old female complained of swelling of the maxillary left anterior region and discoloration of the maxillary left anterior tooth. The maxillary left lateral incisor (tooth #22) showed pulp necrosis and a chronic apical abscess, and a periapical X-ray demonstrated DI on bilateral maxillary central and lateral incisors. All teeth responded to a vitality test, except tooth #22. The anatomic form of tooth #22 was similar to that of tooth #12, and both teeth had lingual pits. In addition, panoramic and periapical X-rays demonstrated root canal calcification, such as pulp stones, in the maxillary canines, first and second premolars, and the mandibular incisors, canines, and first premolars bilaterally. The patient underwent root canal treatment of tooth #22 and non-vital tooth bleaching. After a temporary filling material was removed, the invaginated mass was removed using ultrasonic tips under an operating microscope. The working length was established, and the root canal was enlarged up to #50 apical size and obturated with gutta-percha and AH 26 sealer using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Finally, non-vital bleaching was performed, and the access cavity was filled with composite resin.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the ashed tooth powder is utilized as an alternative material of the implant. For this purpose the author performed the experimental study to investigate the tissue response of sintered toothash and its histocompatibility. Bony defects to expose the body of marrow, $1{\times}1cm$ in size, were created in the right and left mandibular body of mature dog, and then the ashed tooth powders were filled in right side and the blood clot was filled in the left side as an control. The dogs were sacrificed at 4th, 7th, and 16th week after implantation and histologic examination was performed. The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. Any inflammatory response was not noted after implanting of the ashed tooth powder during the whole experimental period. 2. At 4th week, ashed tooth powders were surrounded by mature connective tissue. And we could observe hydroxyapatite crystal structure within the ashed tooth powder. 3. At 7th week, we could observe that macrophage phagocyted the small granules of ashed tooth powders. 4. At 16th week, the union with host bone by growth of new trabeculae was observed. And there were remnants of ashed tooth power within some of new trabeculae.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of cavity preparation and to determine the incidence of tooth crack when root-end retrograde cavity preparation was done with ultrasonics. 91 distobuccal root-ends of extracted human maxillary first molars were cut by 3 mm perpendicularly to the long axis of tooth using a slow speed diamond saw, retrocavities were prepared using a slow-speed no. 2 round bur as controls, and stainless steel ultrasonic tips of power settings of 1 through 10 as experimentals. Time consumed and the number of strokes used for the cavity preparation were measured and evaluated, and the incidence of tooth cracks was observed under a stereomicroscope. The results were as follows : For the retrograde cavity preparation, time and number of strokes used were decreased as the ultrasonic power setting increased (p<0.001). High power setting of ultrasonics induced significantly more tooth cracks than did the slow-speed bur or low- and medium power setting of ultrasonics (p<0.05). Teeth with previous crack induced significantly more tooth cracks than those without previous one when high power setting of ultrasonics were used for the retrograde cavity preparation (p<0.001). Teeth with initial apical canal size of no. 10 induced significantly more crack than did those with size of no. 15 when low power setting of ultrasonics were used for the retrograde cavity preparation (p<0.05).
Hydroxyapatite powder was injected into thehole of teeth. The microstructure of teeth and HAp were observed after immersed in $9\%$ salin solution at $37^{\circ}C$ from 1month to 6 months. The junction morphology of hydroxyapatite and tooth was enhanced and particle size of hydroapatite was decreased with increasing time. The firm waxy body was found due to the hardening of hydroxyapatite fine powder resulting from the destruction of initial powder with swelling. It is suggested that the junction morphology of hydroxyapatite and tooth was observed due to the $Ca^{2+}$ ion shift of hydroxyapatite.
the preliminary work on the prepartion of fine hydroxyapatite powder and the synthesis of dense hydroxyapatite ceramic from the powder were investigated for the development of artificial bone and tooth materials for implants. The effects of the process variables such as compositions of the raw materials the initial pH of the solutions and sintering temperature on the physical properties were investigated in order to determine the optimum conditions for the fabrication of tooth implant material. As the initial pH of the solutions was increased in the range of 10-11.6 the initial particle size of precipitates was decreased thus the sinterability of precipitates was improved. It was found that the composition of calcium rich of 1.75 in Ca/P mole ratio exhibited better sinterability and mechanical strength of the apatite ceramics for example the highest value of Vicker's hardness obtained from the compositions of 1.75 in Ca/P mole ratio was 764±30 Kg/mm2 compared to the maximum value of 600 kg/mm2 obtained from the compositions of 1.67 in Ca/P mole ratio.
A study of a sample of 81 Korean adolescents was taken to determine the degree of correlation between mandibular anterior teeth size and the size of the canines and premolars. The correlation between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and that of maxillary or mandibular canine and first and second premolars was found to be 0.53 and 0.58, respectively. Further , regression constants were determined in an attempt to estimate the buccal segments from the mandibular incisors.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the availability of computer system for the measurement of tooth size in the model analysis through the comparison of two measurements: One was to use a computer; and the other was to use vernier calipers. Twenty sets of casts were used, which showed a moderate degree of crowding and full eruption of all teeth. The mesio-distal width of 12 teeth from the left central incisor to the left first molar at each set of the casts were measured twice with vernier calipers and a computer respectively. This measurement was repeated two weeks later. First, for the reproducibility analysis, the two computer measurements were compared then the vernier calipers measurements were compared. Second, all the teeth were sepapated into the region of mesiodistal contact points and its width was measured by a micrometer to obtain standard measurements. For the accuracy analysis, these standard measurements were compared with the measurements from the dental casts using two methods. The difference between them was defined as the measurement error. To investigate the cause of measurement error, an examination was made for the presence and degree of contact point deviation on each tooth from the upper and lower occlusograms, and the mesio-distal angulation of each tooth was measured with TARG. Following results were obtained through statistical analysis. 1. In the analysis for reproducibility; the measurements with vernier calipers showed significant differences in three out of twelve teeth while the computer measurements showed significant differences in one out of twelve teeth. 2. In the analysis for accuracy; compared with the standard measurements, the measurements with vernier calipers showed significant differences in three out of twelve teeth while the computer measurements showed significant differences in two out of twelve teeth. 3. Compared with the standard measurements, the measurements with vernier calipers were apt to be larger at the upper first molar, and smaller at the lower first molar The computer measurements, however, were apt to be larger at both upper and lower first molars. 4. The measurements with vernier calipers showed the largest error at the lower first molar and the degree of error was variable according to the tooth while the difference of error was small in the computer measurements. 5. In the analysis for the correlation of the degree of measurement errors with the contact point deviation index and the mesio-distal crown angulation of each tooth, the measurements with vernier calipers did not show significant correlation while the measurements with computer showed slight Positive correlations. The results of this study indicate that a computer system may be useful for the measurement of tooth size in the model analysis.
A total of 205 larval gnathostomes were collected from 18 (22.5%) of 80 red banded odd-tooth snakes, Dinodon rufozonatum rufozonatum, which had been smuggled from China and confiscated at Customs in Susan, Republic of Korea. In order to identify the species, some of the larvae were observed by a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The larvae were $2.18{\times}0.29mm$ in average size, and had a pair of lips at the anterior end, a muscular esophagus, 2 pairs of cervical sacs, and brownish intestines. The head bulb was characteristically equipped with 4 rows of hooklets; the average number of hooklets in each respective row was 38.6, 40.5, 41.5, and 43.7. In SEM views, the mouth evidenced a pair of lateral lips of equal size in a half-moon shape. Each lip featured a couple of labial papillae and a small amphid located between the 2 papillae. The hooklets on the head bulb had single-pointed, posteriorly-curved tips. The cuticular spines were larger and more densely distributed on the anterior part of the body, and decreased gradually in size and number toward the posterior body. On the basis of these morphological characteristics, the larvae were identified as the third stage larvae of Gnathostoma hispidum.
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most prevalent congenital craniofacial anomalies. It has a significantly greater incidence of dental abnormalities in number, size, shape, and eruption of the teeth. Knout-out mouse model can identify several genes which play an important role in tooth agenesis. Since disruption of these genes has been confirmed to result in tooth agenesis in humans, CLP associated with hypodontia may be the best models for isolated tooth agenesis. According to the studies of dental abnormalities in CLP, the severity of dental defect is known to be influenced by the CLP phenotype. The cumulative data obtained from mouse and human genetic studies indicated that MSX1, PAX9 and AXIN2 are considered as candidate genes in non-syndromic hypodontia, while Shh, Pitx2, Irf6, p63 and EDA pathway genes are involved in syndromic one. We expect that genetic approach of CLP can offer the basis for tooth regeneration and be a new target in hypodontia therapy.
