In cases of severe alveolar bone atrophy in the posterior maxillary area, which has only a thin sinus floor, the autogenous tooth bone graft block (ABTB) was used to wrap the implant to enhance its primary stability and osseointegration in the sinus. These cases with four years of clinical follow-up demonstrate the applicability of the ABTB in maxillary sinus membrane elevation to improve the outcomes of implant placement.
In this study, we try to implement an image segmentation algorithm to extract only the tooth regions from the tooth color image so that we can assess the color features to estimate the status of denticulus progression.
Background: The market for vitamin drinks is expanding both in Korea and worldwide. However, it was difficult to find studies regarding the possibility of tooth erosion induction due to vitamin drinks. The purpose of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of tooth erosion caused by a few commercial vitamin beverages on bovine teeth enamel in terms of erosion depth and fluorescence loss. Methods: Three experimental groups (vitamin drinks), a positive control group (Coca-Cola), and a negative control group (mineral water) were established. Each group consisted of 5 specimens obtained from sound bovine teeth. The pH and titratable acidity of beverages were measured. Specimens were immersed in the beverages and artificial saliva for 6 and 18 hours, respectively. This cycle was repeated for 5 days. The depth of the tooth loss caused by tooth erosion (erosion depth) and maximum loss of fluorescence (Max ${\Delta}F$) were measured using the microscope and quantified light-induced fluorescence-digital, respectively. For the statistical analysis, the Kruskal-Wallis test and ANOVA were used to compare the erosion depth and Max ${\Delta}F$ of the enamel surfaces. In addition, Spearman correlations were estimated. Results: The pH of the three vitamin beverages ranged from 2.65 to 3.01, which is similar to that of the positive control group. All beverages, except mineral water, had sugar and acidic ingredients. Vitamin drinks and the positive control, Coca-Cola, caused tooth erosion lesions, and showed significant differences in erosion depth compared to mineral water (p<0.05). The vitamin beverages with low pH were associated with high erosion depth and Max ${\Delta}F$. Conclusion: Vitamin drinks have the potential to cause tooth erosion.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate how wisdom tooth extraction is perceived, and to correct erroneous perceptions thereby establishing proper awareness. Methods: We conducted a survey on how wisdom tooth extraction was perceived among adults in 20 households in Seoul and Gyeonggi province starting in December, 2016. Results: A review of the factors influencing the perception of wisdom tooth extraction showed that the regression model was statistically significant and the model had an explanatory power of 8.3%. It was also found that those in their 20s or younger had saw a lower level of perceived oral health, and a higher level in perception in wisdom tooth extraction. Moreover, students, housewives, and professions showed a lower perception of wisdom tooth extraction. Conclusions: It is necessary to have an education program for adults aged 60 or older who have few opportunities for oral health education.

Objectives: The risk of bleeding after tooth extraction in thrombocytopenia patients remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the risk of bleeding after tooth extraction in patients with thrombocytopenia. Materials and Methods: The study included 220 patients who had a medical history of thrombocytopenia and underwent tooth extraction (330 teeth). The patients were divided into those who had thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150k) immediately before the tooth extraction, and those who had platelet counts that were between 150k and 250k before the extraction. Bleeding complications were recorded and compared between the patient groups. Results: Of the 220 patients, 130 underwent tooth extractions while having thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150k), and 90 had platelet counts that were between 150k and 250k before tooth extractions. Bleeding complications occurred in 11 patients (5.0%) of the 220 patients. Among those 11 patients with bleeding complications, 10 patients (7.7%) had thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150k) of the 130 patients, and 1 patient (1.1%) had a normal platelet count of the 90 patients. There was a significant difference between the patient groups regarding bleeding after extractions (P<0.001). No significant difference in the incidence of post-extraction bleeding was found between the subgroups by platelet count within the thrombocytopenia group. Conclusion: Thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150k) increases the risk of post-tooth extraction bleeding. Therefore, bleeding control under the proper evaluation of hemostasis and performing delicate tooth extraction procedures using hemostatic plugs is necessary during the tooth extraction of patients with thrombocytopenia.
Background: This study aimed to analyze the effects of periodontal treatment and individual- and tooth-related factors on tooth extraction in people with disabilities. Methods: The Korea National Health Insurance claims data of individuals with disabilities aged 40~64 years with chronic periodontitis in 2008 were obtained. Of these, data on the disabled who underwent scaling/root plaining, subgingival curettage/periodontal surgery, or non-periodontal treatments, and data on their teeth were selected. The extraction of 716,688 teeth from 39,097 patients was tracked until 2018, and the patient- and tooth-level factors related to tooth loss were identified using a mixed-effect logistic regression analysis. Results: Data from approximately 17% of the teeth were extracted during a follow-up period of approximately 11 years. Among the tooth-level variables, scaling/root planing treatment at baseline and periodontal treatment during the follow-up period were associated with a lower risk of tooth loss (odds ratio=0.692 and 0.769, respectively, p<0.001). Non-vital teeth increased the risk of tooth loss by 3.159 times (p<0.001). Among the patient-level variables, females were less likely to have lost their teeth than males, and those with orthopedic impairment or brain lesions/mental disabilities, a higher age group, lower income level, or residents in medium/small cities or rural areas were more likely to have lost their teeth (p<0.001). Conclusion: Through approximately 11 years of follow-up, scaling or root planing, experience with periodontal treatment at least once, female sex, older age, lower income, smaller residential areas, type of disability, and pulp vitality were found to be associated with tooth loss in individuals with disabilities aged 40~64 years with chronic periodontitis. To prevent tooth loss in individuals with disabilities, it is necessary to establish a dental treatment plan that considers the timing of periodontal treatment and the characteristics of the patient and teeth.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of child's general property, mother's social and economic property, mother's knowledge and behavior in oral hygiene upon the appearance and treatment of child's primary tooth decay. For the purpose, oral examination was applied to one hundred three(103) small children who were at the age between four(4) and seven(7) and went to two(2) places of day care centers located in Seoul, and questionnaire was done to their mothers. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The number of children's dt is 1.55, the number of their ft is 1.42, dft index for primary tooth is 2,98, ft rate is 45.61%, and the higher child's age is, the higher their value is. 2. Mother's age, educational background, and occupation does not show significant difference with dft index for primary tooth. The higher mother's monthly average income is, the higher child's ft rate is. 3. dft index for primary tooth does not show significant difference according 10 mother's knowledge in oral hygiene. And, the child of mother using dental floss does show higher it rate in comparison with the one of mother who does not use dental floss, 4. Experience using dental clinic to treatment tooth decay does show significant difference with dft index for primary tooth. And experience using dental clinic for the purpose of oral examination and preventive treatment does show significant difference with ft rate. 5. From the result of multiple regression with dependent variable of dft index for primary tooth, there is no variable having significant influence. From the result of multiple regression with dependent variable of ft rate, explanatory variable is 43%, child's age, mother's occupation, mother's monthly average income, and experience using dental clinic to prevent tooth decay are significant explanatory elements. Through the above results, we can know that mother should practice positive behavior in oral hygiene for child to improve oral health. Under the reason, oral health education should be applied toward mothers as soon as possible, and governmental support should be followed so that mothers can participate in the education.
