In order to monitor the tool wear in milling operation, cutting force is measured as the tool wear increased. The digital signal processing methods are used to detect the tool wear . As AR parameter extract the feature of tool wear , it can be used as input parameter of pattern classifier. The FFT monitor the tool wear exactly , but it can not do real time signal processing. The band energy method can be used to real time monitoring of tool wear ,but int can degrade the exact monitoring.

Pattern recognition technique using fuzzy c-means algorithm and multilayer perceptron was applied to classify tool wear states in turning. The tool wear states were categorized into the three regions 'Initial', 'Normal', 'Severe' wear. The root mean square(RMS) value of acoustic emission(AE) and current signal was used for the classification of tool wear states. The simulation results showed that a fuzzy c-means algorithm was better than the conventional pattern recognition techniques for classifying ambiguous informations. And normalized RMS signal can provide good results for classifying tool wear. In addition, a fuzzy c-means algorithm(success rate for tool wear classification : 87%) is more efficient than the multilayer perceptron(success rate for tool wear classification : 70%).

This study has been performed to present a new automatic tool wear measurement by digital image processing. The purpose of this paper is to develop an automatic tool wear measuring system based on the image processing which can be applied to the quasi-real time measurement of the characteristics of insert tip in turning. Tool wear monitoring is one of the key-problems, for the development of control systems of modern unmanned factory which are not completely solved now. In oredr words at present complete qualitative and quantitative information on tool wear morphology is required, at least on the following aspects : flank wear, its dimensions and distribution on the maximum and mean values on VB pqrqmeter in the various zones of the wearland. crater wear, its main dimensions and values of KT parameters. This research has been performed to this technique made possible by designing a proper lighting system to the worn tool with following features : The flank wear is measured by observing the active cutting part from a proper direction and by lighting the wearland by a diffuser optic system. The crater wear is visualized by lighting the tool by a He-Ne gas laser system developed in this study. By means of this system it is research to evaluate classical parameters of tool wear and to have complete information about tool wear morphology.

Wear and fracture mode of ceramic tool for hardened SKD11 steel was investigated by face milling in this study. The cutting force and Acoustic Emission(AE) signal were utilized to detect the wear and fracture of ceramic tool. The following conclusions were obtained : (1) The wear and fracture modes of ceramic tool are characterized by three types: \circled1wear which has normal wear and notch wear, \circled2 wear caused by scooping on the rake face, \circled3 large fracture caused by thermal crack in the rake face. (2) The wear behaviour of ceramic tool can be detected by the increase of mean cutting force and the variation of the AE RMS voltage. (3) The catastrophic fracture of ceramic tool can be detected by the cutting force(Fz-component). (4) As the hardness of work material increased, Acoustic Emission RMS value and mean cutting force(Fz) increased linearly, but the tool life decreased.

The tool wear and failure in automatic production system directly influences the quality and productivity of a product, thus it is essential to monitor the tool state in real time. For such purpose, an ART2-based remote monitoring system has been developed to predict the appropriate tool change time in accordance with the tool wear, and this study aims to experimently find the relationship between the tool wear and the monitoring signals in cutting processes. Also, the roughness of workpiece according to the wool wear is examined. Here, the tool wear is indirectly monitored by signals from a vibration senor attached to a machining center. and the wear dimension is measured by a microscope at the start, midways and the end of a cutting process. A series of experiments are carried out with various feedrates and spindle speeds, and the results show that the sensor signal properly represents the degree of wear of a tool being used, and the roughnesses measured has direct relation with the tool wear dimension. Thus, it is concluded that the monitoring signals from the vibration sensor can be used as a useful measure for the tool wear monitoring.
Cutting tool life monitoring is a critical element needed for designing unmanned machining systems. This paper describes a tool wear measurement system using computer vision which repeatedly measures flank and crater wear of a single point cutting tool. This direct tool wear measurement method is based on an interactive procedure utilizing a image processor and multi-vision sensors. A measurement software calcultes 7 parameters to characterize flank and crater wear. Performance test revealed that the computer vision technique provides precise, absolute tool-wear quantification and reduces human maesurement errors.

The effect of tool geometry on the tool wear in turning the austenitic stainless steel, STS 304 was investigated. The wear of TiN-TiCN-TiC-TiAlN coated tungsten carbide tool was the smallest, showing larger wear in the order of Si-Al-O-N ceramic, TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiN- TiCN- TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiC-TiN cermet and M20 tungsten carbide tools at the same cutting conditions. The S-type tool of M20 with the larger side cutting edge angle showed the smallest tool wear in all tests due to preventing the groove wear of the side cutting edge. The wear of the S-type tool with the rake angle of $15^{\circ}$ became smaller than with that of $-5^{\circ}$, but the tool with the nose radius of 0.8mm did not perform much better with increasing the rake angle.

In our study, we develop a finite element model based on Archard's wear law to predict the cumulative wear and the evolution of the tool profile in friction stir welding (FSW) applications. Our model considers the rotational and translational behaviors of the tool, providing a comprehensive description of the wear process. We validate the accuracy of our model by comparing it against experimental results, examining both the predicted cumulative wear and the resulting changes to the tool profile caused by wear. We perform a detailed comparison between the predictions of the model and experimental data by manipulating non-dimensional coefficients comprising model parameters, such as element sizes and time increments. This comparison facilitates the identification of a specific non-dimensional coefficient condition that best replicates the experimentally observed cumulative wear. We also directly compare the worn tool profiles predicted by the model using this specific non-dimensional coefficient condition with the profiles obtained from wear experiments. Through this process, we identify the model settings that yield a tool wear profile closely aligning with the experimental results. Our research demonstrates that carefully selecting non-dimensional coefficients can significantly enhance the predictive accuracy of finite element models for tool wear in FSW processes. The results from our study hold potential implications for enhancing tool longevity and welding quality in industrial applications.

TiAIN was deposited onto ISO P2O Cutting Insert Tip substrate by FVAS at the substrate temperature of 80$^{\circ}C$. Cutting and wear test have been performed with TiAIN coated and uncoated WC cutting tools, respectively. Uncoated WC cutting tool has been tested under similar cutting condition for comparison. Cutting force and tool wear of coated and uncoated carbide cutting tools were investigated by cutting length. In cutting test, cutting force of the coated insert tip was larger than the uncoated insert tip by tool wear. Configuration and wear of the coated tool were more stable and resistant than the uncoated. In tool life by the tool wear, the coated cutting tool life was rather longer than the uncoated when tested at high speed (V=250 m/min) than low speed (V=200 m/min), Cutting force, tool wear and life were analysised by tool dynamometer amp(3ch) and oscilloscope.

In-process monitoring of cutting conditions and tool wear is important for improving productivity. This paper is concerned with on-line monitoring of tool wear and cutting force in end milling operation. The experimental study deals with the relations between flank wear and cutting force signal. Tool wear is detected by monitoring of cutting signal. A monitoring procedure is shown in this paper. The influence of flank wear on cutting signal activity was examined. The results are presented in the form of graphs. The analysis of the cutting signal and flank wear curves provides useful indicators of unacceptable wear development in the tool.
