  • The automated scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) has been designed, and built to measure in-plane displacements associated with waves propagating on vibrating structures. Use of optical fibers allows the compact design of a laser probe head which can be scanned over the vibrating structures. An algorithm for automated self-alignment of the laser probe is developed. The system is completely automated for scanning over the structures, focusing two laser beams at each data point until the detected vibration signal is stable, and for recording and transferring the data to a system computer. The automated system allows one to get extensive data of the vibration field over the structures. The system is tested by scanning a piezoelectric cylindrical shell and a plate excited by a continuous signal and by a pulse signal, respectively. Results show that the automated scanning LDV system can be a useful tool to measure the in-plane vibration field and to detect the elastic waves propagating on the vibrating structures.

  • BLAST, a basic bioinformatics tool for searching local sequence similarity, has been one of the most widely used bioinformatics programs since its introduction in 1990. Users generally use the web-based NCBI-BLAST program for BLAST analysis. However, users with large sequence data are often faced with a problem of upload size limitation while using the web-based BLAST program. This proves inconvenient as scientists often want to run BLAST on their own data, such as transcriptome or whole genome sequences. To overcome this issue, we developed NBLAST, a graphical user interface-based BLAST program that employs a two-way system, allowing the use of input sequences either as "query" or "target" in the BLAST analysis. NBLAST is also equipped with a dot plot viewer, thus allowing researchers to create custom database for BLAST and run a dot plot similarity analysis within a single program. It is available to access to the NBLAST with http://nbitglobal.com/nblast.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil of Gyeongju city, and Haemadipsa rjukjuana of Gageodo Island, characterizing unrecorded yeast strains from Korea. The molecular analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA of yeast was performed using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). No official report exists describing these three species: one species in the genus Candida, one species in the genus Debaryomyces, and one species in the genus Solicoccozyma. Candida saitoana YL9, Debaryomyces fabryi YL1, and Solicoccozyma terrea 20g9-1 are recorded for the first time from Korea. All three strains were oval shaped and polar binding, while positive for glucose, ᴅ-xylose, and ᴅ-cellobiose. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical properties are described in the species descriptions.

  • The global surge in depression and anxiety, intensified by challenges such as cost and stigma, emphasizes the pressing need for accessible, evidence-based digital solutions. The research centers on the creation of a mobile application specifically designed to address mental health challenges. By integrating cognitive behavioral therapy techniques and features like appointment bookings and mindfulness feedback tools, the app is positioned to improve user outcomes. Utilizing platforms like React Native and React, combined with NestJS for enhanced backend security, the application adheres to the rigorous standards required for mental health interventions. Collaborative efforts with experts, notably the counseling unit of IIUM, ensure the app's alignment with contemporary best practices and research. Preliminary findings indicate a promising tool with the potential to address the global mental health treatment disparity.

  • As an effort to reduce cost and lead-time and to increase flexibility and responsiveness, manufacturers are using digital printing in numerous process steps. Typically, these processes require the precise dispensing of various fluids. Piezo ink jet printheads are proving to be reliable tools for depositing active materials such as light emitting polymers (LEP) for mobile phone displays and color filter inks for liquid crystal displays. Ink jets are also being used to provide uniform coatings of polyimide alignment layers and spacers for LCDs. Success with legend printing on PCBs using ink jets has encouraged the design of equipment for directly printing both etch resist and solder mask for PCBs. Development of printers for passive components such as capacitors and resistors is underway. This paper will present the attributes of an ink jet printhead designed to a precision deposition tool and discuss how it is being used to digitally print electronic and flat panel display components. Status of commercialization of digital printing will be discussed along with issues to be resolved before wide adoption takes place.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil samples collected in Daegu and Cheongju city, Republic of Korea. To identify the wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Among 13 strains, 11 strains were previously reported, but two strains were unreported from the Republic of Korea. The two unrecorded yeast strains, GW1-3 and PG1-1-10C, belong to the genus Solicoccozyma (family Piskurozymaceae, order Filobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes). The two strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research showed the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.

Among 11 strains isolated in this study, nine strains were previously reported and two strains were unreported in Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of the D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Of the two unrecorded yeast strains, CY-9-10C belongs to the genus Mrakia (family Mrakiaceae, order Cystofilobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes) and PG3-4-10C belongs to the genus Slooffia (family Chrysozymaceae, order Microbotryomycetes incertae sedis, class Microbotryomycetes). Both strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research described the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.
