  • The fruit of Euphoria longana Lamarck (Sapindaceae) is a sweet food which is available in China and South Asia. Its pulp or flesh (Longan Arillus) is used as a tonic, and for the treatment of amnesia, insomnia, various palpitations due to fright, etc. It is traditionally said to fortify the heart and stabilize the spirit. Four compounds were isolated from the pulp of E. longana. The structures of these compounds were determinded as ${\beta}-sitosterol$, daucosterol, uracil and adenosine by means of spectroscopic methods.

  • The rhizome of Polygonatum robustum Nakai (Liliaceae) has been used as a crude drug for the purpose of tonic and thirst cure in Korea. The dried rhizomes were extracted with hot ether, then the residue was extracted with hot alcohol. 1) The three kinds of chemical constituents, substance, I, II and III were isolated by silicagel column chromatography from ether and alcohol extracts of the rhizomes. Substance I was confirmed as ${\beta}-sitosterol$, $C_{29}H_{50}O$ by mass and IR spectroscopy. Substance II was identified as stigmasterol by GLC. 2) Substance III was obtained by crystallization from the column chromatography of alcohol fraction. It was suggested as diosgenin based on chemical and spectral discussions. 3) The concentration of blood sugar was significantly decreased in the group administered the ether extract with 20% dextrose and adrenaline in comparison to that of 20% dextrose and adrenaline along.

  • Astragali Radix(AR), one of the strong tonic herbs, is known to improve immunological responses in mice and human. In this study, AR's ai-reinforcing effect was examined in the context of CD4/sup +/ T cells' TCR/CD3 induced activation responses. In order to evaluate the direct effect of AR on helper T cells, CD4/sup +/ T cells are isolated using magnetic bead and their proliferation and CD69 expression in AR treated medium were assessed with anti-CD3/anti-CD28 activation for 48h. CD4 T cells' proliferation was slightly increased but there was little effect on CD69 expression. RT PCR and ELISA equally demonstrated that IL-2 and IL-4 production was increased but IFN-ν was down-regulated. This shows AR ethanol extract favors Th2 cytokine profile under neutral conditions.

  • Heterophil (H) to lymphocyte (L) ratios and durations of tonic immobility (TI) were measured to assess stress and fear responses, respectively, in broiler chickens provided either 12 h of natural lighting (12L) or 12 h natural lighting and 12 h of supplementary lighting (24L). Birds illuminated 24L had greater H/L ratios and TI durations than their 12L counterparts. Neither age, sex nor cage level had significant effect on TI reactions.

  • Loud click or tone burst sound can activate vestibular receptor and evoke reflex changes in tonic electromyographic activity within the stenocleidomastoid muscles. This reflex is assumed to originate in the saccule, the afferent pathways being the inferior vestibular nerve, and the efferent pathways the vestibulospinal tract. Averaging these muscular responses allows vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) to be obtained. The earliest response ipsilateral to a loud click, p13n23, is dependent upon vestibular activation, specifically saccular afferents. These new techniques are beginning to be applied clinically in the patient of vestibular neuritis, Meniere's disease, acoustic neuromas, Tullio phenomenon, etc. VEMP recording will provide both a straightforward non-invasive exploration of each vestibule independently and an attractive method by which to explore otolithic receptors and vestibulospinal pathways.

  • Wilms' tumor is the most common malignant renal tumor in childhood. The brain metastasis of a Wilms' tumor with anaplastic histopathology is rare. We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with Wilms' tumor, who presented with multiple brain metastases 5 years after her primary diagnosis. The brain masses were diagnosed after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure attack. The big solid mass in the cerebellum was resected, and whole-brain radiotherapy was performed, after which, she succumbed to her disease. In the case of clinical suspicion, cranial surveillance should be included in the routine clinical work-up for Wilms' tumor. Combined aggressive therapy (surgery+radiotherapy+chemotherapy) should be applied whenever possible, for both better survival and palliative aspects.

  • It is well shown that the metallophthalocyanine (MPcs) are sensitive to tonic gaseous molecules such as NO$_2$ and also chemically and thermally stable. Therefore, lots of MPcs are studied for the potential chemical sensor for NO$_2$ gas using quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) or electrical conductivity. In this study, thin films of octa(2-ethylhexyloxy) copper-phthalocyaninc ware prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett method and characterized by using UV-VIS spectrascopy and cllipsometry. Transfer condition, film characterization, and preliminary results of current-voltage(I-V) characteristics of these films exposed to NO$_2$ gas as a function of film thickness will be discusscd.

  • Whether there exists a sympathetic neural regulation on the aquaporin (AQP) channels in the kidney was examined. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. They were renal nerve denervated by stripping the nervous and connective tissues passing along the renal artery and vein, and painting these vessels with 10% phenol solution through a midline abdominal incision. Three days later, the expression of AQP1-4 proteins in the denervated kidneys was determined. The content of norepinephrine was found significantly decreased following the denervation. Accordingly, the expression of AQP2 proteins was markedly decreased. The expression of AQP3 and AQP4 was also slightly but significantly decreased, while that of AQP1 was not. Neither the basal nor the AVP-stimulated accumulation of cAMP was significantly affected in the denervated kidney. It is suggested that the sympathetic nervous system has a tonic stimulatory effect on AQP channels in the kidney.

  • Cornus controversa $H_{EMSL}$. (Cornaceae) is distributed widely in Korea and has been used for the treatment of diarrhea and a tonic medicine. Six compounds were isolated from the MeOH extract of the dried stem bark of Cornus controversa. Their structures were identified as gallic acid(1), scopoletin(2), arjunglucoside II(3), isoquercitrin(4), quercitrin(5) and rutin(6) by comparisons of the physicochemical and spectroscopic evidences. Among these compounds, scopoletin and arjunglucoside II were the first time isolation from this plant.

  • The Chinese crude drug, 'Man Sam(蔓蔘)', which is derived from the root of Codonopsis plants of the family Campanulaceae, has been used as a tonic. In China, the same crude drug derived from Codonopsis plants, called 'Dang Same(?蔘)', has been used as remedies for anorexia, fatigue, cough, etc. Although Codonopsis roots have been widely used for medicinal purposes in Korea, the botanical origin of the crude drug has never been studied pharmcognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Man Sam', the root morphology and anatomy were examined for the Korean species of Codonopsis species, such as C. lanceolata (Sieb. et Zucc.) Trautv., C. pilosula (Franch.) Nannf. and C. ussuriensis (Rupr. et Maxim.) Hemsl. The study shows that 'Man Sam' is the root of Codonopsis pilosula.
