  • The Oriental tobacco budworm, Heliothis assulta (Guenee), larvae usually feed on the hot-pepper fruits and young tobacco leaves or buds in Korea. This experiment was conducted t(} compare their attraction to their host plants including fruits of the sweet-pepper and solanum uk kwang, besides the other two mentioned above. First instar larvae were most attracted to the hot-pepper fruits. Flowers or leaves of the hot pepper plants were not attractive either. When the hot-pepper fruits were compared for attractancy, based on developmental stages, relatively mature fruits, just before ripening, were the most attractive. Their extract with or without 10% ethanol also gave similar result to 1st instar larvae or 2~4 instar larvae, suggesting a possibility that there is an attractant(s) in the hot-pepper fruits.

  • To elucidate the effect of elevated sublethal temperature ($33\pm1^{\circ}C$) on polyamine metabolism and oogenesis, we investigated alterations in the major polyamines and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and arginine decarboxylase (ADC), and ovarian development during the pupal-adult development of the tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta. Ovaries ODC activity under the elevated sublethal temperature ($33\pm1^{\circ}C$) were lower than those of the optimal rearing temperature ($25\pm1^{\circ}C$). whereas ovarian ADC activity was consistently higher than the optimal rearing temperature ($25\pm1^{\circ}C$). When the gonads were exposed to the higher temperature, ovarian putrescine showed somewhat suppressed levels throughout development, indicating a relatively high correlationship with the alteration aspects in ODC or ADC activity under elevated sublethal temperature. A somewhat precocious ovary was observed in an early stage of development at $33\pm1^{\circ}C$, but cellular abnormalities occurred in this ovary. The ovary developed under elevated sublethal temperature was observed the inhibitional effect of polyamine metabolism and the abnormal development of ovariole, which seem to be related to the sterility.

  • Studies were carried out to investigate the change in protiens and carbohydrates from diapausing pupae of the Oriental tobacco budworm, Heliothis assulta Guenee. The oxygen consumption rate of non-diapausing pupae through the whole pupal period showed an U-shaped curve, while that of diapausing pupae decreased to a mean level of 20$\mu$1/g/hr. But the rate of oxygen consumption increased in diapausing pupae before their emergence. The body weight of diapausing pupae showed almost no change during 12 days after pupation. The total contents of major carbohydrates and soluble proteins were higher in diapausing pupae than those in non-diapausing pupae and the change in carbohydrate and protein contents was more dynamic in non-diapausing pupae than that of diapausing pupae. the electrophoretic band patterns of proteins were similar in both of diapausing and non-diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae increased their haemolmph osmolarity further when they were exposed to low temperatures.

  • A nuclear polyhedrosis virus isolated from the oriental tobacco budworm larvae, Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee) was characterized by electron microscopy, SDS-PAGE, restriction endonuclease analysis and cross infectivity. The shape of a polyhedron was $1.0\mu\textrm{m}$ in average with icosahdral outline, and the virus particle was $65nm\times300nm$ in average with rod-shape. The nuclear polyhedrosis virus was contained a single nucleocapsid within a viral envelope embedded in a polyhedron. The polyhedral protein was composed of a single polypeptide with a M.W. of 31 Kd. The genome size of the virus by restriction endonuclease analysis was about 120 Kb. Among several nuclear polyhedrosis viruses, the nuclear polyhedrosis virus from Helicoverpa assulta (HaNPV) and Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) were infected the oriental tobacco budworm larvae.

  • To improve the integrated pest management (IPM) of hot pepper, field study was conducted in Hwasung from 2010 to 2012 and an IPM system was developed to help growers decide when to apply pesticides to control anthracnose, tobacco budworm, Phytophthora blight, bacterial wilt, and bacterial leaf spot. The three field treatments consisted of IPM sprays following the forecast model advisory, a periodic spray at 7-to-10-day intervals, and no spray (control). The number of annual pesticide applications for the IPM treatment ranged from six to eight, whereas the plots subjected to the periodic treatment received pesticide 11 or 12 times annually for three years. Compared to the former strategy, our improved IPM strategy features more intense pest management, with frequent spraying for anthracnose and mixed spraying for tobacco budworm or Phytophthora blight. The incidences for no pesticide control in 2010, 2011, and 2012 were 91, 97.6, and 41.4%, respectively. Conversely, the incidences for the IPM treatment for those years were 7.6, 62.6, and 2%, and the yields from IPM-treated plots were 48.6 kg, 12.1 kg, and 48.8 kg. The incidence and yield in the IPM-treated plots were almost the same as those of the periodic treatment except in 2011, in which no unnecessary sprays were given, meaning that the IPM control was quite successful. From reviewing eight years of field work, sophisticated forecasts that optimize pesticide spray timing reveal that reliance on pesticides can be reduced without compromising yield. Eco-friendly strategies can be implemented in the pest management of hot pepper.

  • To study overwintering biology of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpaa.ssulta, OTB larvae were collected from middle and southern region of Korea in the autumn and rearedto diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae were held at two different locations (Suwon and Chinju) and wererecollected in the spring to observe adult emergence rate and duration to adult emergence at 25$^{\circ}$C. Thesurvivorship of overwintering pupae was less than 5% when the pupae were buried in the soil in 20cmdepth. However, more than 60% of the pupae survived when they were kept in the plastic cup withartificial diet and were buried in the soil. The mean developmental periods of overwintering pupae at 25"C varied from 20.4 days to 43.9 days depending on years and locations where larvae were collected andpupae were held. The proportion of individuals which required longer than 30 days for development washigher in the population from the middle regions than those of southern regions. However, the proportiondecreased when the pupae collected from middle regions were held at Chinju, southern region. Chinju, southern region.
