The high biocompatibility of titanium is connected with the high corrosion resistance of the surface oxide, its high dielectric constant, and some other specific biochemical properties of the oxide. The corrosion resistance of titanium can be improved with the formation of passive film by anodic oxidation. In other to characterize the titantium oxlde film formed by anodic oxidation, titanium plates were anodized in 0.5M $H_3SO_4$ electrolyte at voltages between 5V and 100v. The oxide film was examined by an X-Ray Diffractometer(XRD) and a Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). In addition, the corrosion resistance of oxide film was tested by dipping in physiological NaCl,5% HCI,5% $H_3PO_4$ and its biocompatability was evaluated by the fibroblast-like cell culture. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The thickness of surface oxide and micropore are increased with the increase of electrode potential and formed deeply along the grain boundary. 2. The solubilities of titanium in electrolyte solution shows that the anodized titanium has more corrosion resistance than the untreated pure titanium. 3. The biocomatibility of anodized titanium is superior to untreated pure titanium.
Titanium is widely used in dentistry for its low density, high strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. But it has a tendency of surface damage under circumstance of friction and impact for its low hardness of the surface. Coating is one of methods fir increasing surface hardness. Its effect is to improve surface physical characteristics without change of titanium. Diamond-like carbon and titanium nitride are known for its high hardness of the surface. So that this study was aimed at the wear test and the cytotoxicity test of the commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy which were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film to acertain improvement of the surface hardness and the biocompatibility. A disk (25mm diameter, 2mm thickness) was made of commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy and these substrates were deposited by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride film. Diamond-like carbon film was deposited by the method of radiofrequency plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition and titanium nitride film was deposited by the method of reactive arc ion plating. Then these substrates were tested about wear characteristics by the pin-on-disk type wear tester in which ruby ball was used as a wear causer under the load of 32N, The fracture cycles were measured by rotating the substrates until their films were fractured. The wear volume was measured after 150 cycles and 3,000 cycles using surface profiler. The cytotoxicity test was peformed by the method of the MTT assay. The results were as follows : 1. In the results of the wear volume test, commercially pure titanium and titanium alloy which were coated by diamond-like carbon film or titanium nitride aim had higher resistance against wear than the substrates which were not coated by any films (P<0.05). 2. In the results of the fracture cycle test and the wear volume test, diamond-like carbon film had higher resistance against wear than titanium nitride film (P<0.05). 3. In both coatings of diamond-like carbon aim and titanium nitride film, Ti-6Al-4V alloy had higher resistance against wear than commercially pure titanium (P<0.05) 4. In the results of the cytotoxicity test, diamond-like carbon film and titanium nitride film had little cytotoxicity as like commercially pure titanium or Ti-6Al-4V alloy (P>0.05).
Titanium and its alloys are technically superior and cost-effective materials, with a wide variety of aerospace, industrial, marine, and commercial applications. In this study, the effects of titanium ions on bacterial growth were evaluated. Six strains of bacteria known to be resistant to both metal ions and antibiotics were used in this study. Two strains, Escherichia coli ATCC 15489, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145, proved to be resistant to titanium ions. Plasmid-cured p. aeruginosa resulted in the loss of one or move resistance markers, indicating plasmid-encoded resistance. The plasmid profile of p. aeruginosa revealed the presence of a 23-kb plasmid. The plasmid was isolated and transformed into $DH5{\alpha}$. Interestingly, the untransformed $DH5{\alpha}$ did not grow in 300 mg/l titanium ions, but the transformed $DH5{\alpha}$ grew quite well under such conditions. The survival rate of the transformed $DH5{\alpha}$ also increased more than 3-fold compared to that of untransformed $DH5{\alpha}$.
The electrocoating for automotive bodies is pigmented with a mixture of titanium dioxide and kaolin. In this study, the effects of titanium dioxide and kaolin contents in coating on electrodeposition process, drying, and surface properties such as surface roughness, gloss, impact resistance and corrosion resistance were investigated. Titanium dioxide and kaolin in coating do not have a decisive effect on curing reaction during drying and corrosion resistance but on gloss, surface roughness, impact resistance and electrodeposition process of coating. According to its size and shape on coating surface, pigment contents increased during drying process. However, the contents of kaolin and $TiO_2$ in coating didn't affect the corrosion resistance on zinc phosphated substrate, and the curing properties.
There are a number of studies that explain the metabolism and roles of metallic titanium and titanium-ion. One of the most intriguing results from these studies is the finding of metallic titanium having no bacteriostatic effects on oral bacterial species. In this research, the effects of titanium-ion on the growth of twenty-two bacterial species, some of which are commonly found in foods such as yoghurt, kimchi, and soy fermented products, were investigated. All but two bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa appeared to be sensitive to titanium-ion. These two species were grown on 360 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ of titanium-ions, and they were found to be resistant to the titanium-ion. Both the wild-type and plasmid-cured E. coli showed good growth in a medium with 200 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ of titanium-ions. These results suggest that titanium-resistance was independent from the effects of the plasmid in E. coli.
The objective of this study was to investigate delayed oxygen evolution and localized corrosion resistance of titanium alloys by performing potentiodynamic polarization, potentiostatic polarization, and Mott-Schottky measurements. Delayed oxygen evolution was compared among titanium alloys, 316 stainless steel, and platinum. Difference in delayed oxygen evolution between titanium alloys and other metals was attributed to specific surface characteristic of each metal. Delayed oxygen evolution of titanium alloys resulted from the predominant process of ionic conduction over electronic conduction. The effect of oxygen evolution on localized corrosion of titanium alloys was investigated using electrochemical critical localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT) technique. Mott-Schottky measurement was performed to clarify the difference in film properties between titanium alloys and stainless steels. Titanium alloys were found to have much lower donor density than stainless steels by 1/28. These results indicate that delayed oxygen evolution has little influence on the concreteness of passive film and the resistance to localized corrosion of titanium alloys.
We investigated the void formation in composite-titanium silicide($TiSi_2$) process. We varied the process conditions of polycrystalline/amorphous silicon substrate, composite $TiSi_2$ deposition temperature, and silicidation annealing temperature. We report that the main reason for void formation is the mass transport flux discrepancy of amorphous silicon substrate and titanium in composite layer. Sheet resistance in composite $TiSi_2$ without patterns is mainly affected by silicidation rapid thermal annealing (RTA) temperature. In addition, sheet resistance does not depend on the void defect density. Sheet resistance with sub-0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ patterns increase abnormally above $850^{\circ}C$ due to agglomeration. Our results imply that $sub-750^{\circ}C$ annealing is appropriate for sub 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ composite X$sub-750_2$ process.

Titanium alloys have lightness, high strength and good corrosion resistant characteristics, and broadly used in manufacturing parts for military and aerospace industries. And these alloys also are recognized for organism materials comparatively and used as fixing ones in the human body. Nevertheless thess alloys have excellent properties such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and good tensile strength, it is difficult to machine by traditional methods because of high hardness and chemically activated property. So higher tool wear is expected when cutting by tools. Therefore, it is required nontraditional machining process. And the mechanical characteristics such as surface structure and shape, hardness and bending strength are studied for wire electrical discharge machined and surface ground titanium alloys for various heat-treated conditions.

Titanium and its alloys have excellent corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratios and creep properties in high temperature, which make them using many various fields of application. Especially, pure titanium, which has outstanding resistance for the stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting and microbiologically influenced corrosion, brings out to the best material for the heat exchanger, ballast tank, desalination facilities, and so on. Responding to these needs, welding processes for titanium are also being used GTAW, GMAW, PAW, EBW, LBW, resistance welding and diffusion bonding, etc. However, titanium is very active and highly susceptible to embrittlement by oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon at high temperature, so it needs to shield the weld metal from the air and these gases during welding by non-active gas. In this study, it was possible to get sound beads without humping and spatter with a decrease of peak power according to increase of pulse width, change of welding speed and overlap rate for heat input control, and shield conditions at pulsed laser welding of titanium plates for Lap welding.

The fabrication of interconnect from titanium powders and $TiN_x$ powders is investigated. Corrosion-resistant titanium and $TiN_x$ are used as reinforcement in order to reveal high heat and corrosion resistance at the elevated temperature. We fabricated the plates for interconnect reinforced with $TiN_x$ by mixing titanium powders with 10 wt.% of nano-sized $TiN_x$. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was chosen for the sintering of these composites. The plate made of titanium powders and $TiN_x$ powders demonstrates higher corrosion resistance than that of the plate of titanium powders alone. The physical properties of specimens were analyzed by performing hardness test and biaxial strength test. The electrochemical properties, such as corrosion resistance and hydrogen permeability at high temperature, were also investigated. The microstructures of the specimens were investigated by FESEM and profiles of chemical compositions were analyzed by EDX.
