  • The dynamics of fermentation were studied with Italian ryegrass ensiled in the laboratory silos. The silos were kept in the room set at 25$^{\circ}C$, and then were opened on 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 14 days after ensiling, respectively. The samples were taken from three silos at each sampling time for chemical analyses. Mono-and disaccharides composition was determined for glucose, fructose and sucrose by high performance liquid chromatography. The Italian ryegrass silage succeeded to achieve lactate type fermentation; high values of lactic acid (85.83 g/kg) and lactic acid/acetic acid at the end of ensiling (14 day), low values of pH (3.74), acetic acid (5.38 g/kg), ethanol (19.20 g/kg) and $NH_3-N/Total\;N$ (75.84 g/kg), no or only small amounts of butyric acid, valeric acid and propionic acid. The fermentation dynamics showed a fast and large pH decrease caused by a fast and large production of lactic acid during the first 5 days. Mono-and disaccharides composition largely decreased within initial 0.5 day (12 h) of ensiling. Sucrose disappeared rapidly within initial 0.5 day of ensiling, and fructose and glucose contents showed an initial rise during ensiling, and then decreased gradually. These indicated that the enzymes of plant tissue were active within 2 days of ensiling, which caused the initial rise in fructose and glucose from the hydrolysis of sucrose and fructans. After 5 days of ensilage, glucose was consumed completely, suggesting that glucose was the first fermentation substrate. After 2 days of ensiling, sum amounts of lactic acid and remaining mono-and disaccharides proved to be larger than the quantity of mono-and disaccharides in the initial grass. From the facts mentioned above, it was suggested that considerable amounts of lactic acid were produced from some other substrate such as fructans than initial mono-and disaccharides.

  • The pasteurization of bone tumor shows necrosis of tumor tissue and it is used widely as one of the options of limb salvage operation. However malignant tumors of the extremities commonly involve major neurovascular structures and pasteurization of this structure will make limb salvage operation much easier and safer than autogenous vein graft or artificial vessel graft. So the purpose of this study is to evaluate that the pasteurization can be applied in the limb salvage surgery of malignant tumor involving major vessels by means of studying the patency of pasteurized femoral vessels of the dogs. The right femoral arteries of 5 to 7 mm in diameters and veins of 7 to 10 mm in diameters of five dogs were pasteurized with sterile $60^{\circ}C$ saline for 30 minutes. Contralateral femoral vessels were evaluated for the control study. After one month, the changes in the pasteurized femoral vessels were evaluated by physical examinations, femoral angiography, gross findings, and pathologic findings on the each side. One month after pasteurization, the pulse of the femoral and popliteal arteries was palpated with normal tone on the each side of the all five experimental animals, and there was no gross swelling or necrotic changes in the legs. Femoral angiography showed a good patency of femoral and popliteal arteries. On the gross examinations at time of sampling of the specimen for the pathologic examinations, there was a good patency of femoral artery and vein, and mild fibrous adhesion was noted around the pasteurized femoral vessels. On the pathologic examinations, the more fibrotic adhesion and neocapillarization were noted in the outer layer of adventitia of the pasteurized femoral arteries and veins than the control sides. The vascular lumina were also patent in all cases. With these results, we suggest that the malignant tumor of the extremity involving major vessels is possibly treated by the limb salvage operation using the pasteurization of the involved vessels.

  • The aim of the present study was to update the calibration that is used for the measurement of the total nitrogen content in the rice plant samples by using the visible and near infrared spectrum. Before the equation merge, correlation coefficient of calibration equation for nitrogen content on each rice parts was 0.945 (Leaf), 0.928 (Stem), and 0.864 (Whole plant), respectively. In the calibration models created by each part in the rice plant under the various regression method, the calibration model for the leaf was recorded with relatively high accuracy. Among of those, the calibration equation developed by Partial least squares (PLS) method was more accurate than the Multiple linear regression (MLR) method. The calibration equation was sensitive based on variety and location variations. However, we have merged and enlarged various of the samples that made not only to measure the nitrogen content more accurately, but also later sampling populations became more diversified. After merging, $R^2$ value becomes more accurate and significantly to 0.950 (L.), 0.974 (S.), 0.940 (W.). Also, after removal of outlier, R2 values increased into 0.998, 0.995, and 0.997. In view of the results so far achieved, Standard error of prediction (SEP) and SEP (C) were reduced in the stem and whole plant. Biases were reduced in the leaf, stem as well as whole plant. Slopes were high in the stem. Standard deviation reduced in the stem but $R^2$ was high in the stem and whole plant. Result was indicated that calibration equation make update, and updating robust calibration equation from merge function and multi-variate calibration.

  • Background: Surgery on the lower impacted third molar usually involves trauma in the highly vascularized loose connective tissue area, leading to inflammatory sequelae including postoperative pain, swelling, and general oral dysfunction during the immediate post-operative phase. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of preoperative injection of a single dose of 8 mg dexamethasone for postoperative pain control in lower third molar surgery. Methods: A controlled, randomized, split-mouth, prospective study involving lower third molar surgery was performed in 31 patients. The randomized sampling group was preoperatively injected, after local anesthesia, with a single dose of dexamethasone (8 mg in 2 ml) through the pterygomandibular space; 2 ml of normal saline (with no dexamethasone) was injected as a placebo. Results: The pain VAS score was significantly different on the day of the operation compared to the first post-operative day (P = 0.00 and 0.01, respectively), but it was not significantly different on the third and seventh postoperative day between the control and study groups. There was a significant reduction in swelling on the second postoperative day, and a difference between the second postoperative day and baseline value in the study group (P < 0.05). Trismus was highly significantly different on the second postoperative day and between baseline and second postoperative day between the groups (P = 0.04 and 0.02, respectively). Descriptive statistics and independent-samples t- test were used to assess the significance of differences. Conclusions: Injection of 8 mg dexamethasone into the pterygomandibular space effectively reduced the postoperative pain and other postoperative sequalae.

  • No definitive etiology or risk factors have been identified that predispose individuals to developing complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). We experienced two cases of CRPS developed after arterial and venous puncture which were done in regular medical work. A 35-years old female patient was suffered from pain and allodynia with swelling at right hand and wrist after radial artery puncture for monitoring of blood pressure during general anesthesia. A 24-years old male patient had pain and swelling with allodynia at the right fingers and arm after median cubital vein puncture for blood sampling. They did not have proper pain management as CRPS patients in the past weeks and months after their pain occurred. They were diagnosed as CRPS and started undergoing various interventional procedures, which led to improve their pain condition. Our cases suggest that CRPS could develop without any proved tissue damage in routine medical practice. In conclusion, health care workers should be educated in knowledge about the uncommon medical condition and proper consultation to pain specialist when it happens.

  • Impact is one of the major cause of damage to fruits druing varios processes from the production on the farm to the consumer. The tissue of fruits are ruptured in a very short period time less than 10ms by impact loading. Mechanical behavior of fruits under impact loading can be analyzed better with high speed sampling data acquisition system and one of them is a digital storage oscilloscope. A impact test system was developed to test the physical properties of fruits including apple, pear, and peach which may lead to a better understanding of the physical laws. The test system consisted of a digital storage oscilloscope and simple mechanism which can apply impact force to fresh produce. Rupture force, energy, and deffrmation were measured at the five levels of drop heights from 4 to 24cm fur each internal and external tissues. Rupture forces for apple and pear were in the range of 72.9 to 87.7 N and 70.8 to 84.1 N for external and internal tissues, respectively. Rupture forces far peach external tissues were in the range of 43.4 to 65.0 N.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) using a 19-gauge needle is an efficient sampling method for the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. This study compared 19-gauge conventional and Franseen needles for the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy and classification of malignant lymphoma (ML). Methods: Patient characteristics, number of needle passes, puncture route, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of cytology/histology for lymphadenopathy were analyzed in patients diagnosed with lymphadenopathy by EUS-FNA using conventional or Franseen needles. Results: Between 2012 and 2022, 146 patients met the inclusion criteria (conventional [n=70] and Franseen [n=76]). The median number of needle passes was significantly lower in the conventional group than in the Franseen group (3 [1-6] vs. 4 [1-6], p=0.023). There were no significant differences in cytological/ histological diagnoses between the two groups. For ML, the immunohistochemical evaluation rate, sensitivity of flow cytometry, and cytogenetic assessment were not significantly different in either group. Bleeding as adverse events (AEs) were observed in three patients in the Franseen group. Conclusions: Both the 19-gauge conventional and Franseen needles showed high accuracy in lymphadenopathy and ML classification. Considering sufficient tissue collection and the avoidance of AEs, the use of 19-gauge conventional needles seems to be a good option for the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy.
