An analytical solution of the buckling governing equations of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) nanobeams obtained by using a developed third-order shear deformation theory is presented. Electro-mechanical properties of FGP nanobeam are supposed to change continuously in the thickness direction based on power-law model. To capture the small size effects, Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is adopted. Employing Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of a FG nanobeams made of piezoelectric materials are obtained and they are solved using Navier-type analytical solution. Results are provided to show the effect of different external electric voltage, power-law index, nonlocal parameter and slenderness ratio on the buckling loads of the size-dependent FGP nanobeams. The accuracy of the present model is verified by comparing it with nonlocal Timoshenko FG beams. So, this study makes the first attempt for analyzing buckling behavior of higher order shear deformable FGP nanobeams.
In this scientific work, an improved analytical solution for adhesive stresses in a concrete beam bonded with the FRP plate is developed by including the effect of the adherend shear deformations. The analysis is based on the deformation compatibility approach where both the shear and normal stresses are assumed to be invariant across the adhesive layer thickness. The shear stress distribution is supposed to be parabolic across the depth of the adherends in computing the adhesive shear stress and Timoshenko's beam theory is employed in predicting adhesive normal stress to consider the shear deformation. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented both to demonstrate the advantages of the present solution over existing ones and to illustrate the main characteristics of adhesive stress distributions.
In engineering structures, to having the projected structure to serve all the engineering purposes, the theory to be used during the modeling stage is also of great importance. In the present work, an analytical solution of the free vibration of the beam composed of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is presented utilizing different beam theories. The comparison of supposed beam theory for free vibration of functionally graded (FG) beam is examined. For this aim, Euler-Bernoulli, Rayleigh, Shear, and Timoshenko beam theories are employed. The functionally graded material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction of the beam with respect to the volume fraction of constituents. The governing equations of free vibration of FG beams are derived in the frameworks of four beam theories. Resulting equations are solved versus simply supported boundary conditions, analytically. To verify the results, comparisons are carried out with the available results. Parametrical studies are performed for discussing the effects of supposed beam theory, the variation of beam characteristics, and FGM properties on the free vibration of beams. In conclusion, it is found that the interaction between FGM properties and the supposed beam theory is of significance in terms of free vibration of the beams and that different beam theories need to be used depending on the characteristics of the beam in question.

This paper aims to present an analytical methodology to investigate influences of nanoscale and surface energy on buckling stability behavior of perforated nanobeam structural element, for the first time. The surface energy effect is exploited to consider the free energy on the surface of nanobeam by using Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory. Thin and thick beams are considered by using both classical beam of Euler and first order shear deformation of Timoshenko theories, respectively. Equivalent geometrical constant of regularly squared perforated beam are presented in simplified form. Problem formulation of nanostructure beam including surface energies is derived in detail. Explicit analytical solution for nanoscale beams are developed for both beam theories to evaluate the surface stress effects and size-dependent nanoscale on the critical buckling loads. The closed form solution is confirmed and proven by comparing the obtained results with previous works. Parametric studies are achieved to demonstrate impacts of beam filling ratio, the number of hole rows, surface material characteristics, beam slenderness ratio, boundary conditions as well as loading conditions on the non-classical buckling of perforated nanobeams in incidence of surface effects. It is found that, the surface residual stress has more significant effect on the critical buckling loads with the corresponding effect of the surface elasticity. The proposed model can be used as benchmarks in designing, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams.
The estimation of springing responses for recent ships is carried out, and application to a ship design is described. To this aim, springing effects on hull girder were re-evaluated, including non-linear wave excitations and torsional vibrations of the hull. The Timoshenko beam model was used to calculate stress distribution on the hull girder, using the superposition method. The quadratic strip method was employed to calculate the hydrodynamic forces and moments on the hull. In order to remove the irregular frequencies, we adopted 'rigid lid' on the hull free surface level, and addedasymptotic interpolation along the high frequency range. Several applications were carried out on the following existing ships: The Bishop and Price's container ship, S-175 container ship, large container, VLCC, and ore carrier. One of them is compared with the ship measurement result, while another with that of the model test. The comparison between the analytical solution and the numerical solution for a homogeneous beam-type artificial ship shows good agreement. It is found that Most springing energy comesfrom high frequency waves for the ships having low natural frequency and North Atlantic route etc. Therefore, the high frequency tail of the wave spectrum should be increased by $\omega$$\^{-3}$ instead of $\omega$$\^{-4}$ or $\omega$$\^{-5}$ for the springing calculation.
The present paper investigate the elastic buckling of chiral double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) under axial compression. Using the non-local elasticity theory, Timoshenko beam model has been implemented. According to the governing equations of non-local theory, the analytical solution is derived and the solution for non-local critical buckling loads is obtained. The numerical results show the influence of non-local small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number, the chirality of carbon nanotube and aspect ratio of the (DWCNTs) on non-local critical buckling loads of the (DWCNTs). The results indicate the dependence of non-local critical buckling loads on the chirality of single-walled carbon nanotube with increase the non-local small-scale coefficient, the vibrational mode number and aspect ratio of length to diameter.

An approximate method based on an assumed mode method has been presented for the free vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with arbitrary edge constraints. In the presented method, natural frequencies and their mode shapes of the plate are calculated by solving an eigenvalue problem of a multi-degree-of-freedom system matrix equation derived by using Lagrange's equations of motion. Characteristic orthogonal polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions which satisfies edge constraints corresponding to those of the objective plate are used. In order to examine the accuracy of the proposed method, numerical examples of the rectangular plates with various thicknesses and edge constraints have been presented. The results have shown good agreement with those of other methods such as an analytic solution, an approximate solution, and a finite element analysis.

This article aims to investigate the size dependent bending behavior of perforated nanobeams incorporating the nonlocal and the microstructure effects based on the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory (NSGET). Shear deformation effect due to cutout process is studied by using Timoshenko beams theory. Closed formulas for the equivalent geometrical characteristics of regularly squared cutout shape are derived. The governing equations of motion considering the nonlocal and microstructure effects are derived in comprehensive procedure and nonclassical boundary conditions are presented. Analytical solution for the governing equations of motion is derived. The derived non-classical analytical solutions are verified by comparing the obtained results with the available results in the literature and good agreement is observed. Numerical results are obtained and discussed. Parametric studies are conducted to explore effects of perforation characteristics, the nonclassical material parameters, beam slenderness ratio as well as the boundary and loading conditions on the non-classical transverse bending behavior of cutout nanobeams. Results obtained are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of such nanosized structural system.
This study investigates the static and dynamic structural analysis of symmetrical and asymmetrical coupled shear walls using the continuous and modified transfer matrix methods by idealizing the coupled shear wall as a three-field CTB-type replacement beam. The coupled shear wall is modeled as a continuous structure consisting of the parallel coupling of a Timoshenko beam in tension (with axial extensibility in the shear walls) and a shear beam (replacing the beam coupling effect between the shear walls). The variational method using the Hamilton principle is used to obtain the coupled differential equations and the boundary conditions associated with the model. Using the continuous method, closed-form analytical solutions to the differential equation for the coupled shear wall with uniform properties along the height are derived and a numerical solution using the modified transfer matrix is proposed to overcome the difficulty of coupled shear walls with non-uniform properties along height. The computational advantage of the modified transfer matrix method compared to the classical method is shown. The results of the numerical examples and the parametric analysis show that the proposed analytical and numerical model and method is accurate, reliable and involves reduced processing time for generalized static and dynamic structural analysis of coupled shear walls at a preliminary stage and can used as a verification method in the final stage of the project.
A linearised buckling analysis of thin-walled beams is addressed in this paper. Beam theories formulated according to a unified approach are presented. The displacement unknown variables on the cross-section of the beam are approximated via Mac Laurin's polynomials. The governing differential equations and the boundary conditions are derived in terms of a fundamental nucleo that does not depend upon the expansion order. Classical beam theories such as Euler-Bernoulli's and Timoshenko's can be retrieved as particular cases. Slender and deep beams are investigated. Flexural, torsional and mixed buckling modes are considered. Results are assessed toward three-dimensional finite element solutions. The numerical investigations show that classical and lower-order theories are accurate for flexural buckling modes of slender beams only. When deep beams or torsional buckling modes are considered, higher-order theories are required.
