  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out validity of Surface Electromyography(sEMG) compared with Nerve Conduction Study and clinical assessment scale as assessment factors for facial palsy. Methods: We investigated 50 cases of patients with peripheral facial palsy who had records of sEMG and NCS to check. Then we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and NCS that carried out around 1 week after onset. And we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and clinical assessment scales that were measured three times around 1 week, 3-4 weeks and 5-6 weeks after onset. Clinical assessment scales used in this study were House-brackmann grade, Yanagihara unweighted grading scale and Sunnybrook facial grading system. We used Pearson's correlation for statistical analysis. Results: sEMG and NCS, measured at similar times, were statistically correlated. Especially, the correlation with the forehead region was high. And sEMG and clinical assessment scale, measured at same time, were statistically correlated, especially after 5 weeks from onset. Conclusion: According to this study, sEMG is expected to be useful to assessment facial palsy.

  • Plants regenerated from in vitro cultures are associated with chromosomal variations, which have been generally found in long-term culture. Reducing plant culture age is one of the ways to reduce genetic and epigenetic changes. The present study focused on the efficient in vitro propagation of lily cultivars and has intensified to speed up bulb propagation for cryopreservation. The multiplication process applied in this experiment uses starting material, which the newly small bulb formed from bulb-scales in two lily cultivars. The adventitious bulb from bulb-scale tissue cultured on three different media following Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 1 g/L Charcoal, MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone with or without Charcoal, respectively. After about seven weeks, there is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of the two media. Compared to the both mediums, the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal. After about seven weeks, the results of the propagation showed that the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal compared to the both mediums. The number of propagated bulbs ranged from 5 to 6 and 4 to 6 with an average of 5 in Tropicalpink and Greenstar cultivars, respectively. There is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of other media. The multiplication process applied in this study may save in vitro culture period and effort.

  • This paper discusses a real time production control system of a FMS (Flexible Manufacturing System). The control is organized in a hierarchical structure according to the various decisions at the different time scales. In the earlier work-set-up time was not considered. Because the capacity of the toll magazine is limited, this assumption may not be adequate for selecting times to change configurations so that new part family can be produced. The goal of the control system is to meet production requirements while the machines fail and are repaired at random times. In this thesis the machien failure and set-up are considered simultaneously. Here the hedging point of this system is calculated, and the formulation of the dynamic control for FMS that has unreliable machines with set-up suggested.

  • Time resolved infrared IR absorption spectroscopy is carried out to investigate the dynamics of electric field induced reorientation of the biphenyl molecular core and alkyl tail sub-fragments of the nematic liquid crystal 5CB (4-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl). The planar to homeotropic transition for high pre-tilt planar aligned cells, is studied for switching times ranging from 200 ${\mu}sec$ down to 80 ${\mu}sec$, the latter a factor of 1000 times faster than any previous nematic IR study. The reorientation rates of the core and tail are found to be the same to within experimental error and scale inversely with applied field squared, as expected for the balance of field and viscous torques. Thus any molecular conformation change during switching must relax on a shorter time scale. A simple model shows that no substantial differences exist between the reorientational dynamics of the tails and cores on the time scales longer than on the order of 10 ${\mu}s$.

  • This study investigated the self-concepts of Korean students based on Marsh and Shavelson's(1985) multidimensional hierarchical model. Reduced forms of the Self-Description Questionnaire(SDQ)-I and -II were administered to 308 5th and 6th grade students and 718 7th to 9th grade students. Results of 2 factor analyses indicated that sub-scales 9 and 11 were well established for SDQ-I and -II, respectively, partly confirming the multidimensionality of self-concept. The factors involving distinctions between academic and non-academic higher-order factors and between the academic/math and the academic/verbal factors were not so differentiated nor hierarchically arranged as proposed by the model. These differences may be attributed to the heavy influence of the academic self-concept on the other sub-factors. A Locality ${\times}$ Sex ${\times}$ Grade ANOVA showed main effects of locality favoring urban areas and of sex favoring boys.

  • The purpose of this study is to find one of the standard scales of outside space. Fortunately, Korea has interesting old geographical name representing the environment where people feel comfortable by being enclosed by hills or mountains like in a room. The name of Chinese letter "谷" meaning valley is enunciated as "Gog", and Korean native equivalent word is "Sil." We thought we can find the standards of scale of the villages with name that ends with "Gog" or "Sil" by examining the scale of the village of the certain geographical name. We could collect 33 village's geographical names in Jin An Gun area, examined the scale, and considered the results from various aspects. The main conclusions are following: 1) Almost of the 33 villages with geographical names of "Gog", or "Sil" were surrounded by the hills of mountains, and the scales of the spaces surrounded were roughly 10~25ha. 2) Our ancestors felt comfortable be being enclosed with hills or mountains like in a room, and they have recognized the certain scale of the enclosed spaces. 3) After converting the 33 areas into squares for convenience, the scales of the spaces with the geographical name of "Gog" or "Sil" were roughly $300m{\times}300m{\sim}500m{\times}500m$.

  • Background: Studies on the pain have been dealing with many different ways for last several centuries. Especially, preemptive analgesia is being used as a method to control the postoperative pain. Many studies on its efficacy have been processed in different ways about various drugs, administration methods and times for various operations. And the value of preemptive analgesia are still controversial regarding the results of other clinical studies. The authors performed a clinical study on efficacy of preemptive analgesia using an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the surgical extraction of impacted third molar teeth and present the more effective pain treatment after oral surgery with literature review. Methods: Using a randomized double blind test design, this study compared the analgesic efficacies of an NSAID, Talniflumate 370 mg. This drug administrated first either 1 hour preoperatively (experimental group) or when the pain developed moderately to severely over 5 scale of verbal rating scales (0-10) to respective 30 patients undergoing the removal of impacted third molars. Pain intensity and the time from the end of surgery were assessed postoperatively whenever the patients demanded additional drug over 5 scale for forty eight hours using same verbal rating scales. Results: The sex distribution, the age of the patients. and the time required for surgery in two groups were similar. The average first time for demanding additional drug after surgery was 163.9 minutes in experimental group and 191.5 minutes in control group. At this time, the average pain intensity was 5.8 in experimental group and 6.1 in control group. And the average second time for demanding additional drug was 365.5 minutes in experimental group and 351.8 minutes in control group. At this time. the average pain intensities were 6.6 in experimental group and 6.2 in control group. No statistically significant difference was found between the average first times and second times, and the average pain intensities at first and second times in two groups. Conclusions: From these results the efficacy of preemptive analgesia used in this study was not appeared. This clinical study indicates that many NSAIDs administrated preoperatively in present practices have weak efficacy of preemptive analgesia for postoperative pain, thus the authors recommend that only postoperative analgesics are adequate without preoperative use of analgesics.
