  • Ultrasonic sensors show various reception characteristics based on the density of the measurement medium; hence, they are used in various fields to benefit from the characteristics of ultrasonic signals. In this study, the reception characteristics according to the thickness of the first matching layer are compared and analyzed for application to gas tank microleak detection. Accordingly, three types of sensors are manufactured with varying thicknesses of the first matching layer, namely 4.8 mm, 5.1 mm, and 5.5 mm; further, a direct measurement method is used wherein the sensor is attached to the inside of the chamber. Experiments are conducted to observe the phase change due to microleakage, which is the most linear in the sensor with the 4.8 mm thick first matching layer. This is assumed to be the result of stable signal transmission and reception with little phase deviations over time because the first matching layer is closest to the ultrasonic wavelength. The other sensors show nonlinear results with increasing thickness of the first matching layer. Through this study, it is found that appropriately selecting the thickness of the first matching layer of the ultrasonic sensor can greatly influence sensor reliability.

  • Commonly deep learning methods for enhancing the quality of medical images use unpaired dataset due to the impracticality of acquiring paired dataset through commercial imaging system. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning method to enhance the quality of ultrasound images. The U-net model is designed by incorporating a divide-and-conquer approach that divides and processes an image into four parts to overcome data shortage and shorten the learning time. The proposed model is trained using paired dataset consisting of 828 pairs of low-quality and high-quality images with a resolution of 512x512 pixels obtained by varying the number of channels for the same subject. Out of a total of 828 pairs of images, 684 pairs are used as the training dataset, while the remaining 144 pairs served as the test dataset. In the test results, the average Mean Squared Error (MSE) was reduced from 87.6884 in the low-quality images to 45.5108 in the restored images. Additionally, the average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) was improved from 28.7550 to 31.8063, and the average Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) was increased from 0.4755 to 0.8511, demonstrating significant enhancements in image quality.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channel is often defined as a multipath fading channel since the multipath arrivals from various paths interfere with each other and cause frequency dependent constructive or destructive interference in received signals. Therefore signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of received signal fluctuates as a function of frequency. In addition, sea surface fluctuation induces frequency dependent time variant signal fading due to coherent component variation of surface bounce path. The frequency shift keying (FSK) system is known to be less sensitive and more robust under these interference and fading, and M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) system is adopted to increase a data rate. In this study, a bit error rate (BER) of 4 channels 4FSK system are examined in shallow sea multipath channel. Experimental results show that RS code reduces efficiently the BER of 4FSK system since frequency dependent time-varying fading is characterized to give burst errors. The BER of a different data rate or different source-to-receiver range depends on not only the channel coherent bandwidth but also frequency dependent multipath fading.

  • Underwater acoustic channel impulse responses (CIR) are influenced by sound speed profile (SSP), and the variation of CIR has significant effects on the performance of underwater acoustic communication systems. A significant change of SSP can occur within a short period, which must be considered during the design of underwater acoustic modems. This paper statistically analyzes the effect of the variation of SSP on the long-range acoustic signal propagation in shallow-water with thermocline using numerical modeling based on the data acquired from JACE13 experiment near Jeju island. The analysis result shows that CIR changes variously according to the SSP and the depth of the transmitter and receiver. We also found that when the transmitter and receiver are deeper, the variation of sound wave propagation pattern is smaller and signal level becomes higher. All CIR obtained in this study show that a series of bottom reflections due to downward refraction and small bottom loss in the shallow water with thermocline can be very important factor for long-range signal transmission and the performance of underwater acoustic communication system in time varying ocean environment can be very sensitive to the variation of SSP even for a short period of time.

  • This paper describes the non-stringed guitar composed of laser strings, frets, sound synthesis algorithm and a processor. The laser strings that can depict stroke and playing arpeggios comprise laser modules and photo diodes. Frets are implemented by voltage divider. The guitar body does not need to implement physically because commuted waveguide synthesis is used. The proposed frets enable; players to represent all of chords by the chord glove as well as guitar solo. Sliding, hammering-on and pulling-off sounds are synthesized by using parameters from the voltage divider. Because the pitch shifting corresponds to the time-varying propagation speed in the digital waveguide model, the proposed model can synthesize vibrato as well. After transformation of signals from the laser strings and frets into parameters for synthesis algorithm, the digital signal processor, TMS320F2812, performs the real-time synthesis algorithm and communicates with the DAC. The demonstration movieclip available via the Internet shows one to play a song, 'Arirang', synthesized by proposed algorithm and interfaces in real-time. Consequently, we can conclude that the proposed synthesis algorithm is efficient in guitar solo and there is no problem to play the non-stringed guitar in real-time.

  • This paper proposes an efficient scheme to track a time variant channel induced by multi-path Rayleigh fading in mobile MIMO-OFDM systems with null sub-carriers. The proposed adaptive channel tracking scheme removes in the frequency domain the interfering signals of the other transmit (Tx) antennas by using a predicted channel frequency response before starting the channel estimation. Time domain channel estimation is then performed to reduce the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The simulation results show that the proposed method is better than the conventional channel tracking method [3] in time varying channel environments. At a Doppler frequency of 300 Hz and bit error rates (BER) of 10-3, signal-to-noise power ratio (Eb/N0) gains of about 2.5 dB are achieved relative to the conventional channel tracking method [3]. At a Doppler frequency of 600 Hz, the performance difference between the proposed method and conventional one becomes much larger.

  • In the almost application parts, GNSS being used the primary navigation system on world-widely. However, some of nations attempt or deliberate to enhance current Loran system, as a backup to satellite navigation system because of the vulnerability to the disturbance signal. Loran interests in supplemental navigation system by the development and enhancement, which is called eLoran, and that consists of advancement of receiver and transmitter and of differential Loran in order to increase the accuracy of current Loran-C. A significant factor limiting the ranging accuracy of the eLoran signal is the ASF in the TOAs observed by the receiver. The ASF is mostly due to the fact that the ground-wave signal is likely to propagate over paths of varying conductivity and topography. This paper presents comparison results between the predicted ASF and the measured ASF in a southern east region of Korea. For predicting ASF, the Monteath model is used. Actual ASF is measured from the legacy Loran signal transmitted Pohang station in the GRI 9930 chain. The test results showed the repeatability of the measured ASF and the consistent characteristics between the predicted and the measured ASF values.

  • Purpose : In order to overcome limitations in the existing conventional spectrometer, a new spectrometer with advanced functionalities is designed and implemented. Materials and Methods : We designed a spectrometer using the TMS320C6701 DSP capable of 1 giga floating point operations per second (GFLOPS). The spectrometer can generate continuously varying complicate gradient waveforms by real-time calculation, and select image plane interactively. The designed spectrometer is composed of two parts: one is DSP-based digital control part, and the other is analog part generating gradient and RF waveforms, and performing demodulation of the received RF signal. Each recover board can measure 4 channel FID signals simultaneously for parallel imaging, and provides fast reconstruction using the high speed DSP. Results : The developed spectrometer was installed on a 1.5 Tesla whole body MRI system, and performance was tested by various methods. The accurate phase control required in digital modulation and demodulation was tested, and multi-channel acquisition was examined with phase-array coil imaging. Superior image quality is obtained by the developed spectrometer compared to existing commercial spectrometer especially in the fast spin echo images. Conclusion : Interactive control of the selection planes and real-time generation of gradient waveforms are important functions required for advanced imaging such as spiral scan cardiac imaging. Multi-channel acquisition is also highly demanding for parallel imaging. In this paper a spectrometer having such functionalities is designed and developed using the TMS320C6701 DSP having 1 GFLOPS computational power. Accurate phase control was achieved by the digital modulation and demodulation techniques. Superior image qualities are obtained by the developed spectrometer for various imaging techniques including FSE, GE, and angiography compared to those obtained by the existing commercial spectrometer.

  • The main reason to install pedestrian pushbuttons is improving traffic operations. The current guideline for the installation of signal systems with pedestrian pushbuttons is car-oriented. It is difficult to clearly understand the guideline because there isn't an in-depth study to compare the pros and cons of the pedestrian- and vehicle-oriented methods in terms of waiting time. Thus, this study aims to estimate the waiting times of pedestrians and vehicles. The two delay times are compared considering the hypothetical circumstances such as geometry, pedestrian crossing time, pedestrian/vehicle counts and arrival distribution. The results show that when the pedestrian traffic volume exceeds 97 ped/h in the case of a two-lane road (one lane in each direction) the pushbutton system is effective and beneficial to pedestrians. It means that the total waiting time of pedestrians is less than the one of vehicles. Additional four scenarios are designed and tested by varying the number of lanes and design speeds. In conclusion, the pushbutton signal is more beneficial for pedestrians when the number of pedestrians is less than or equal to 85, 70, and 70 ped/h for the three-lane scenario, the four-lane with the design speed of 80km/h scenario, and the four-lane with the design speed of 100km/h, respectively.

  • Installation of pedestrian scramble is recently increasing due to pedestrian-oriented transportation policies issued in local governments. Pedestrian scramble is able to emphasize safety issues by reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles when an exclusive pedestrian phase is employed. In spite of its positive property, pedestrian scramble has several negative points: an increase of a cycle length, a decrease of green time ratio, and an increase of total delay. This study delivers the impacts of pedestrian scrambles in terms of pedestrian convenience and traffic mobility. Authors analyzed the changes of traffic delays by comparing the installation and no installation of pedestrian scramble at an intersection by varying several variables: signal timings, traffic volumes, the number of lanes, and the number of pedestrian conflicts. The paper presents an analysis procedure as a guideline that assists practitioners in selection of appropriate intersections at where pedestrian scrambles are implemented.
