  • This paper presents drug release properties of active drug delivery system (DDS) using volume change of polypyrrole (PPy). The incorporation of various chemical substances into the PPy and controlling its release with the externally applied voltage to the PPy are possible. In order to confirm possibility for drug delivery system qualitatively, indicator(phenol red) was examined as a dopant of PPy. The applied voltage to the PPy electrode was set to -2 V and this negative voltage makes the anionic indicator released in saline solution. After qualitative analysis, in order to confirm quantitative drug release characteristic of PPy, salicylate which is one of the aspirin substance was used as a dopant of PPy. As a result, the salicylate release characteristics with time was thoroughly investigated while varying the electrode area, polymerization time, the applied voltage for drug release. Based on these quantitative results, a preliminary experiment was carried out to check the feasibility of the PPy applicable to the neuronal system.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between occupational accidents in the construction industry and business cycle factors. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to achieve the research purpose; additionally, time-varying parameter estimations were performed to interpret the results. The results obtained for the construction industry revealed a statistically significant relationship between occupational accidents and wage increase rate, unemployment, construction starts, and other factors. The wage increase rate plays a role in reducing occupational accidents because efforts are made to prevent accidents owing to the increase in income loss due to accidents and the demand for increased safety levels. The number of construction starts affects occupational accidents with a time lag of 1 to 2 or 4 months; therefore, it is likely to be used as a leading indicator for estimating fatal accidents in the construction industry. This study highlighted the importance of monitoring socioeconomic changes that could affect the working conditions of workers and workplaces, and production activities in the workplace for the effective prevention of occupational accidents. This study also reveals the necessity of developing a method to operate prevention projects flexibly and the seasonality of industrial characteristics, particularly those of the construction industry where the highest number of fatal occupational injuries occur.

  • Long-termly used in water supply, an underground concrete pipe is easily subjected to the coupled action of pressure loading and flowing water, which can cause the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, resulting in its premature failure and lifetime reduction. Based on the leaching characteristics and damage mechanism of concrete pipe, this paper proposes a coupled chemo-mechanical damage and failure model of underground concrete pipe for water supply, including a calcium leaching model, mechanical damage equation and a failure criterion. By using the model, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the failure process of underground concrete pipe, such as the time-varying calcium concentration in concrete, the thickness variation of pipe wall, the evolution of chemo-mechanical damage, the distribution of concrete stress on the pipe and the lifetime of the pipe. Results show that, the failure of the pipe is a coupled chemo-mechanical damage process companied with calcium leaching. During its damage and failure, the concentrations of calcium phase in concrete decrease obviously with the time, and it can cause an increase in the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, while the leaching and abrasion induced by flowing water can lead to the boundary movement and wall thickness reduction of the pipe, and it results in the stress redistribution on the pipe section, a premature failure and lifetime reduction of the pipe.

  • SiO2, renowned for its excellent insulating properties, has been used in the semiconductor industry as a valuable dielectric material. High-quality SiO2 films find applications in gate spacers and interlayer insulation gap-fill oxides, among other uses. One of the prevalent methods for depositing these SiO2 films is plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) favored for its relatively low processing costs and ability to operate at low temperatures. However, compared to the increasingly utilized atomic layer deposition (ALD) method, PECVD exhibits inferior film characteristics such as uniformity. This study aims to produce SiO2 films with uniformity as close as possible to those achieved by ALD through the adjustment of PECVD process parameters. we conducted a total of nine PECVD processes, varying the process time and gas flow rates, which were identified as the most influential factors on the PECVD process. Furthermore, ellipsometry analysis was employed to examine the uniformity variations of each process. The experimental results enabled us to elucidate the relationship between uniformity and deposition rate, as well as the impact of gas flow rate and deposition time on the process outcomes. Additionally, thickness measurements obtained through ellipsometer facilitate the identification of optimal process parameters for PECVD.

  • Existing pedestrian and evacuation models generally seek to find locally optimal solutions for the shortest or the least time paths to exits from individual locations considering pedestrian's characteristics (eg. speed, direction, sex, age, weight and size). These models are not designed to produce globally optimal solutions that reduce the total evacuation time of the entire pedestrians in a building when all of them evacuate at the same time. In this study, we suggest a globally optimal model for indoor pedestrian evacuation to minimize the total evacuation time of occupants in a building considering different distributions of them. We used the genetic algorithm, one of meta-heuristic techniques because minimizing the total evacuation time can not be easily solved by polynomial expressions. We found near-optimal evacuation path and time by expressing varying pedestrians distributions using chromosomes and repeatedly filtering solutions. In order to express and experiment our suggested algorithm, we used CA(cellular automata)-based simulator and applied to different indoor distributions and presented the results.

  • In many real time applications that the system maintains sensitive information to be shared by multiple users with different security levels, security is another important requirement. A secure real time database system must satisfy not only logical data consistency but also timing constrains and security requirements associated with transactions. Even though an optimistic concurrency control method outperforms locking based method in firm real time database systems, where late transactions are immediately discarded, most existing secure real time concurrency control methods are based on locking. In this paper, we propose a new optimistic concurrency control protocol for secure real time database systems, and compare the performance characteristics of our protocol with locking based method while varying workloads. The result shoes that our proposed O.C.C protocol has good performance in case of many data conflict.

  • Objective: Sous-vide cooking offers several advantages for poultry meat, including enhanced tenderness, reduced cooking loss, and improved product yield. However, in duck meat, there are challenges associated with using the sous-vide method. The prolonged cooking time at low temperatures can lead to unstable microbial and oxidative stabilities. Thus, we aimed to assess how varying sous-vide cooking temperatures and durations affect the physicochemical and microbial characteristics of duck breast meat, with the goal of identifying an optimal cooking condition. Methods: Duck breast meat (Anas platyrhynchos) aged 42 days and with an average weight of 1,400±50 g, underwent cooking under various conditions (ranging from 50℃ to 80℃) for either 60 or 180 min. Then, physicochemical, microbial, and microstructural properties of the cooked duck breast meat were assessed. Results: Different cooking conditions affected the quality attributes of the meat. The cooking loss, lightness, yellowness, Hue angle, whiteness, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values of the duck breast meat increased with the increase in cooking temperature and time. In contrast, the redness and chroma values decreased with the increase in cooking temperature and time. Cooking of samples higher than 60℃ increased the volatile basic nitrogen contents and TBARS. Microbial analysis revealed the presence of Escherichia coli and Coliform only in the samples cooked at 50℃ and raw meat. Cooking at lower temperature and shorter time increased the tenderness of the meat. Microstructure analysis showed that the contraction of myofibrils and meat density increased upon increasing the cooking temperature and time. Conclusion: Our data indicate that the optimal sous-vide method for duck breast meat was cooking at 60℃ for 60 min. This temperature and time conditions showed good texture properties and microbial stability, and low level of TBARS of the duck breast meat.

  • Mobile computing has such characteristics as portability, wireless network, mobility, etc. These characteristics cause various problems to mobile terminals like frequent disconnection, high error rate, and varying network status. These problems motivate us to develop an adaptive error control mechanism for supporting multimedia service in mobile computing environment. In this paper, we propose the Adaptive Error Control(AEC) scheme using client's buffer size and current error rate. After categorizing the status into four groups according to client's buffer size and current error rate, this scheme applies an appropriate error control scheme to each status. In this scheme, thresholds of buffer size and error rate are determined by the data transmission time, play rate and average VOP size, and by the probability of error for a sequence of packets. The performance of proposed scheme is evaluated by flaying MPEG-4 files on an experimental client/server environment, respectively. The results show that error correcting rate is similar to other schemes while the time for correcting error reduce a little. In addition, the size of data for correcting error is decreased by 23% compared with FEC and Hybrid FEC, respectively. Theses results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is more suitable in mobile computing environment with small bandwidth and varying environment than existing schemes.

  • Conventional power spectrum methods based on FFT, AR method are not appropriate for analyzing biomedical signals whose spectral characteristics change rapidly. On the other hand, time-frequency analysis has more desirable characteristics of a time-varying spectrum. In this study, we investigated the spectral components of heart rate variability(HRV) in time-frequency domain using time frequency analysis methods. In the various time-frequency kernels functions, we studied the suitable kernels for the analysis of HRV using synthetic HRV signals. First, we evaluated the time/frequency resolution and cross term reduction of various kernel functions. Then, from the instantaneous frequency, obtained from time-frequency distribution, the method extracting frequency components of HRV was proposed. Subjects were 17 healthy young men. A coin-stacking task was used to induce mental stress. For each subjects, the experiment time was 3 minutes. Electrocardiogram, measured during the experiment, was analyzed after converted to HRV signal. In the results, emotional stress of subjects produced an increase in sympathetic activity. Sympathetic activation was responsible for the significant increase in the LF/HF ratio. Subjects were divided into two groups with task ability. Subjects who have higher mental stress have lack of task ability.
