  • Many studies in detection and classification of the targets in the underwater environments have been conducted for military purposes, as well as for non-military purpose. Due to the complicated characteristics of underwater acoustic signal reflecting multipath environments and spatio-temporal varying characteristics, active sonar target detection technique has been considered as a difficult technique. In this paper, we describe the basic concept of Fractional Fourier transform and optimal transform order. Then we analyze the relationship between time-frequency characteristics of an LFM signal and its spectrum using Fractional Fourier transform. Based on the analysis results, we present active sonar target detection method. To verify the performance of proposed methods, we compared the results with conventional FFT-based matched filter. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to the conventional method in the aspect of AUC(Area Under the ROC Curve).

  • In this study, we developed a method of improving the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) response characteristics by depositing a nanoporous Ag metal thin film through cluster source sputtering after forming a pyramidal texture structure on the Si substrate surface. A reactive ion etching (RIE) system with a metal mesh inside the system was used to form a pyramidal texture structure on the Si surface without following a complicated photolithography process, unlike in case of the conventional RIE system. The size of the texture structure increased with the RIE process time. However, after a process time of 60 min, the size of the structure did not increase but tended to saturate. When the RF power increased from 200 to 250 W, the size of the pyramidal texture structure increased from 0.45 to 0.8 ㎛. The SERS response characteristics were measured by depositing approximately 1.5 ㎛ of nanoporous Ag metal thin film through cluster sputtering on the formed texture structure by varying the RIE process conditions. The Raman signal strength of the nanoporous Ag metal thin film deposited on the Si substrate with the texture structure was higher than that deposited on the general silicon substrate by up to 19%. The Raman response characteristics were influenced by the pyramid size and the number of pyramids per unit area but appeared to be influenced more by the number of pyramids per unit area. Therefore, further studies are required in this regard.

  • The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has a frequency-adaptive time-frequency tiling property, which makes it popular for the analysis of dispersive elastic wave signals. However, because the time-frequency tiling of CWT is not signal-dependent, it still has some limitations in the analysis of elastic waves with spectral components that are dispersed rapidly in time. The objective of this paper is to introduce an advanced time-frequency analysis method, called the dispersion-based continuous wavelet transform (D-CWT) whose time-frequency tiling is adaptively varied according to the dispersion relation of the waves to be analyzed. In the D-CWT method, time-frequency tiling can have frequency-adaptive characteristics like CWT and adaptively rotate in the time-frequency plane depending on the local wave dispersion. Therefore, D-CWT provides higher time-frequency localization than the conventional CWT. In this work, D-CWT method is applied to the analysis of dispersive elastic waves measured in waveguide experiments and an efficient procedure to extract information on the dispersion relation hidden in a wave signal is presented. In addition, the ridge property of the present transform is investigated theoretically to show its effectiveness in analyzing highly time-varying signals. Numerical simulations and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the present method.

  • This paper was undertaken to do morphological analysis of wear particles for sliding members hydrauric rotary acuator. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device and wear specimens of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffinic base oil by three kinds of lubricating materials, varying applied load, sliding distance. The four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) are used for morphological analysis of wear particles. The results showed that the four shape parameters of wear particles depend on a kind of the lubricating materials. It was capable of presuming wear volume for three kinds of materials on driving time.

  • This paper describes an approach for synthesizing a Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) that combines the benefits of fuzzy logic control and fuzzy logic gain scheduling for the F/A-18 aircraft. Specially, fuzzy rules are utilized on-line to determine the denoralization factor(Κ) of a feedback fuzzy controller based on the dynamic pressure(Q) indicateing the region of the flight envelop the aircraft is operating in. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FLC provides excellent compensation for time-varying and/or nonlinear characteristics of the aircraft, and that it also exhibits satisfactory robustness with noisy air data sensors.

  • Variable Structure Controller(VSC) is usually known to have robustness to bounded exogenous disturbances. The robustness is attributed to the discontinuous term in the control input. However, this discontinuous term also causes an undesirable effect called chattering. To alleviate chattering, a hybrid controller consisting of VSC and Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) is proposed, which belongs to the category of Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller(FSMC). The role of FLC in FSMC is to replace a fixed gain of a discontinuous term with a time-varying one based on a specified rule base. The characteristics of proposed controller are shown to be similar to those of VSC with a saturation function instead of sign function. The only remarkable difference is the nonlinearity whose form can be adjusted by free parameters, normalize gain, denormalize gain, and membership functions. Applied to AC servo motor, the proposed controller is compared with VSC in a regulation problem as well as a speed tracking problem. The simulation results show a substantial chatter reduction.

  • Laboratory determination of strength and deformation behavior of clean sands and gravels has always been challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining their undisturbed samples. An alternative solution to this problem is to develop correlations between mechanical properties of cohesionless soils and their gradation characteristics. This study presents database of 3 natural sands with 11 varying particle size gradation curves to allow investigating relationships between mean particle size, maximum and minimum void ratio, relative density and shear strength of the test soils. Direct shear tests were performed at relative densities of 50, 75 and 95% to explore the effects of gradation and density on the angle of internal friction of the modeled sand samples. It is found that the mean grain size D50 bears good correlations with void ratio range (emax - emin) and peak angle of internal friction 𝜙'peak. The generated regression models are in good agreement with published literature and can be considered as reliable for natural sands in Pakistan. These empirical correlations can save considerable time and efforts involved in laboratory and field testing.

  • Adaptive neural networks based lateral controller is presented to guarantee path following performance for vehicle lane keeping in the presence of parameter time-varying characteristics of the vehicle lateral dynamics due to the road surface condition, load distribution, tire pressure and so on. The proposed adaptive controller could compensate vehicle lateral dynamics deviated from nominal dynamics resulting from parameter variations by incorporating it with neural networks that have the ability to approximate any given nonlinear function by adjusting weighting matrices. The controller is derived by using Lyapunov-based approach, which provides adaptive update rules for weighting matrices of neural networks. To show the superiority of the presented adaptive neural networks controller, the simulation results are given while comparing with backstepping controller chosen as the baseline controller. According to the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed controller can effectively keep the vehicle tracking the pre-given trajectory in high velocity and curvature with much accuracy under parameter variations.

  • This paper examined the dynamic instability of a shallow arch according to the response characteristics when nearing critical loads. The frequency changing feathers of the time-domain increasing the loads are analyzed using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT), while the response signal around the critical loads are analyzed using Hilbert-Huang Transformation (HHT). This study reveals that the models with an arch shape of h = 3 or higher exhibit buckling, which is very sensitive to the asymmetric initial conditions. Also, the critical buckling load increases as the shape increases, with its feather varying depending on the asymmetric initial conditions. Decomposition results show the decrease in predominant frequency before the threshold as the load increases, and the predominant period doubles at the critical level. In the vicinity of the critical level, sections rapidly manifest the displacement increase, with the changes in Instantaneous Frequency (IF) and Instant Energy (IE) becoming apparent.
